If my school allowed me any extra brain space, I would remember where the discussion about culture vultures was...but...we may have a definition at last.

I have straight male friends who transitioned from appropriating black style to appropriating queer style overnight. They literally went from throwing up gang signs in every MySpace photo and trying to spit freestyles while passing a champagne flavored blunt to attending gallery openings and wearing Buddy Holly glasses. Are these Christopher Columbus culture vampires incapable of an original thought? Must they usurp from every fringe identity?

Culture Vulture: People who have no intrinsic style and happily copy, and consider themselves to be going against the mainstream. Whee!

We've got a hipster in my class, and of course she indignantly denies that she is. However, she's got the look, would never be caught dead without that look, and loves pushing her indie music, latest tats, and f-u attitude on the rest of us, while demanding to be treated like an elegant lady. And she belches unapologetically. Yeah...artistic.

It was a book discussion, I remember that much... *checks* Cultural Amnesia, that's it.

This... sounds like someone I know. He went from rocker, to black and proud... which was odd considering that he's white, to itialian mafia enthusiast, to obsessive admirer of Putin and russian organized crime. I'm losing track at this point.

Maybe that girl is trying to hit a particular note while belching, or... okay, I'm unable to think of a good joke on this one. That's so... not gross per se, but close. Rude?

Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem with those sort of people if not for the underlined. Reminds me of the goths...

"No intrinsic style" cannot really be helped, since it's supposed to be "intrinsic," so I really don't have a problem with them. If they change their style a lot to match others, so what? The underlined is where I get pissed off. If you copy others, you are simply switching to another style that is no less suppressive, evil, whatever than mainstream.

Styles, mainstream in particular, are suppressive and evil? Explain that, please.

Styles other than mainstream may be shunned/laughed at/etc.

I like goth styles, although I'm not nearly obsessed with my appearance enough to be one in real life.

What's suppressive and evil are the fashions for home decor. Seventies style? So ugly. Granite counter tops now? stare They're all speckly and gross looking, but they raise the value of the house more than quartz or marble counter tops. So even people who don't like granite probably install it because of the money issue. And then just... endure the ugliness, because it's what's in now.
