There as something calming about being in the mountains. Maybe it was the cold and the snow that helped her feel relaxed, or the maybe it was the secluded atmosphere. Not like she needed company all the time- she had someone to haunt her enough already. Anyway, she didn’t like hiding herself behind illusions, and she knew none of the mortals would accept her in her mortal form.
It was all a lot more trouble than it was worth.
The best thing to do was to stay in the snow, where she knew she was safe. Her home. Even the Gods made her uncomfortable, cold and more than a little difficult to speak to. Aw, how she couldn’t do anything without messing it up.
Sighing softly, she watched her Ibex as he played in the snow, bounding around working on the strength in his legs. It was hard to make sure he acted enough like the animal he really was. Not a lion. Not a God. Just an Ibex. Dinner, to some.
An adorable little snack.

]The snowcapped mountains and snow crunching below his feet had a nostalgic feeling to him. While this was the first time he ever set paw to this monotone land, it made him think of his earliest memories of waking up in the God Haven. A sanctuary for immortals, it had been a strange land and a depressing prison that he had to learn to fly before he could escape from. It had been unkind to start out his life that way, alone and cold, and the environment of ice structures had not been the place that invited many guests. Back then, he had HATED that place to which he was thrown into this world, confused and without guidance, and it only seemed appropriate that eh found himself here. Once again he was without direction, without any family, with no idea of what to do with himself. Well, he wasn’t COMPLETELY alone.
Penka, the feisty klipspringer, trotted through the snow beside him, having never seen the stuff and kicking about, leaping over the mounds and discovering the difficulties of this terrain. For one thing, she was cold, and she soon tired of the snow to run and leap up on Khuluma’s back, finding it warm and using his hair as a makeshift blanket.
“Don’t make any knots in it.” He whined, looking over his shoulder at her. He didn’t even want her here, but the little herd beat had left to follow him. At this point, he just couldn’t shake her off, and this wasn’t the sort of place he could feel comfortable leaving her alone in. She would get lost and die, and while he didn’t want her around, he didn’t want her to become someone’s supper either.
“I’m not messing with your precious hair and making it full of knots. Don’t worry about it. Geez.” She flicked her head and curled in, watching the world around her as she regained her energy so she could later rush in the snow.
They weren’t the only ones enjoying themselves. Further off, Khuluma saw a strange little animal playing. Sure that these were the herd animals of this region, he smiled and watched it, not thinking twice that he was considered a predator. Living with Pala and his herd had altered his way of thinking to this extent, and he started to move towards it to say hello. Penka, not thinking her sissy friend was a threat, was absorbed in watching the other animal. It didn’t look like any creature from her herd that she had ever seen. How interesting!!

Isidomu plopped into a particularly large mound of snow, laughing happily as he wandered around in circles. “Come join me, Nquma!” he said gleefully, looking at the much larger animal. Nquma chuckled faintly at the thought- a clumsy animal like her, bounding around in the snow like some kind of child? No, it was better for her to take the role of spectator than any kind of active participant in the ibex’s games. She shook her head slowly, which Isidomu seemed fairly unsurprised by. He continued to play, his mood unspoiled by her refusal to join him.
As he continued to see what kind of odd shapes he could leave in the snow, he noticed a bright yellow figure heading his way. Any normal herd beast would have seen the lion and taken off running in fright. However, Isidomu was no ordinary Ibex. He was… a little confused about the kind of animal he actually needed to act like. Half the time he was happy to make himself seem like a lion cub. Nquma’s lion cub.
Grinning, he charged towards the lion, bounding up to him with flakes of snow dancing all around his wildly moving hooves. “Hello!” he cheered, coming to a stop in front of the stranger, no evident fear on his expression.
Nquma had more than enough for the both of them at that moment. It felt like her heart had sprang up into her chest as she watched the little animal head towards the other God. Honestly, did he have no sense? Scrambling to follow, Nquma darted after the Ibex, slowly down once she was within pouncing range. If that animal tried to hurt her Isidomu…. She was ready to make what was bound to be an excessively awkward counter attack. Keeping her expression calm, despite the pounding of her chest, she watched the yellow male.
“You’ll have to forgive him,” she said, hiding the unease from her low tone, “he doesn’t quite understand what it means to be edible just yet… he’d not a very bright creature.” She looked at him, watching his crane his neck back so he could match eyes with her. Instead of being offended by her remark, she found him grinning back at her.
The fool.
“What… brings you to my home?” she asked the smaller lion carefully.

Penka perked up when she noticed the little creature had turned to look at them, and then started to step in place when she saw it was coming to them. Excited, she leaped off his back and beside him, already feeling a spring in her already bouncy step at seeing a local. Khuluma was less sure, wondering what in world this little creature was, but feeling relieved that it wasn’t big enough to make him think that it could tear his pretty head off. The ibex was a cute thing, with little horns and dark fur. Penka saw it looked similar to a small, male, klipspringer, but only just barely. It’s fur was thicker, it’s legs looks less long than her limbs, and was more a mesh of colors than the lovely stripes she was proud of; a trait her mother passed on to her.
Just as the ibex greeted them, Khuluma noticed the other lion and reared back when he noticed it was a god. He barely noticed it among all the snow and ice, and it was rushing towards him. While he was moving to get Penka, the klipspringer was just as eager to make introductions. “Hello there! You’re a funny looking thing. What are you?” While the ibex might have been unaware of how tasty it was to predators, Penka knew about being hunted down and being a delicious treat, but she was as hardheaded as her bother and when she noticed the lioness, she saw it was a goddess and naturally assumed that Khuluma would have something to say about letting a god eat her. That was a poor assumption to make, as Penka also knew that Khuluma did not hunt or fight a day in his life.
It was a relief that the goddess was not charging at them to harm them, but was actually coming to talk, something that Khul had no problem with. Breathing out, he nodded with a small smile. “I see. Well, he must be wary with a God like Predators being so dedicated to his job.” He smiled at the small ibex before looking up at the rather peculiar looking goddess. Each immortal was different, but this one certainly was unique. Horns of what looked like ice and snowy white hair falling wild around her face. Then there was the fur on her back and the rustic jewelry. Very unique, but he was rather jealous of the horns.
“Aw. Predators is probably MILES away from here, and I don’t see anything but you two here that could eat us. Well, probably just you since he doesn’t eat.” Penka gave a sassy little flick of her head in Khul’s direction before coming closer to the ibex.
“Good thing too or else you wouldn’t be following me.” Khuluma pointed out, before readdressing the goddess. “I’m traveling, and my friend – ”
“Sister.” Penka corrected.
“ – is traveling with me. I don’t have no other purpose than sightseeing. I have never been here and wanted to see what might happen if I came here. I didn’t suspect to find much of anything in this sort of terrain. It’s very surprising to meet you two. I’m Khuluma, God of Rhetoric, and this is Penka.”
Penka beamed. “I’m a klipspringer. What are you?” She asked, looking back at what she thought was a weird herd beast.

Nquma watched them, smiling faintly. It comforted her to see others with a strange relationship. Others who played with their food. Who didn’t consider their food… food at all. Even if this particular relationship was a bit stranger than she would have imagined. Maybe they were both just messing around with her to make her feel like an idiot for hanging around Isidomu. Then again, if they were both hanging around to play pranks together, that still made them friends and still gave them a unique relationship most lions didn’t have with prey beasts.
Or was she thinking about this too much?
She straightened when she was addressed, smiling weakly. It seemed like her nerves were getting the better of her already. That never seemed to take very long. Clearly her throat, she tried her best to look composed in the face of her mounting concerns.
“My name is Nquma,” she replied politely, her voice trembling just a little bit, “I’m the Goddess of Glaciers and this is actually my home. I watch over this territory, making sure things stay as they should. My little companion’s name is Isidomu. I suppose you can say I’m his mother… though of course I’m not REALLY his mother. I just mean… that.. you know… I accidentally killed his mother before realizing he was there.” She cleared her throat, feeling a little like she was going to be sick.
Which would be very noticeable in the snow.
Isidomu, meanwhile, looked at the larger animal, confused by the lack of horns. Didn’t all of his kind have horns? Nquma did, and she was a girl, so it couldn’t have been that! “I’m a lion!” He replied lightly, laughing as he took to bouncing around her. “Grr! Grr! A LION! Lion I am!” He stopped at a grunt from Nquma, looking up at the other a moment before grinning sheepishly.
“Uh… I’m an Ibex… my name is Isidomu… nice to meet you.”
“I hope you don’t mind the cold… you’re welcome to stay as long as you like, though I know most don’t want to stay in a place as unforgiving as this…”
