From the skill of Lioness to the craft of Trickster to the savvy of Bloodhound--Tamora Pierce has shown us creativity and talent in her many wonderful novels. Here is a place where those who are interested in such things may discuss our Authoress' technique--what her style amounts to, how it has evolved over time, and how such style might be applied to our own works.

I found it rather interesting that she decided to try out a different narrative style with the Beka Cooper books. Writing a novel in journal form is something I haven't tried but I imagine it must be a little difficult. Beka's the perfect character for that style though, since keeping a detailed log of her days fits in with who she is. I can't imagine Alanna or Daine ever taking the time to write diligently and descriptively in a journal.

Excellent point, Krilana!

Beka's use of journals not only can serve to further immerse the reader in the story, but it also allowed Pierce to use a first-person storytelling perspective! Why do you think she made this choice? Was she just going for something new with these books, or did the first-person perspective serve a specific purpose with this tale? Or maybe it was a matter of convenience--like you pointed out, Krilana, it's hard to imagine Alanna or Daine ever keeping a journal, but in Terrier and Bloodhound, Pierce used the explanation of instruction and usefulness to keep Beka journaling.

I think that her earlier books are rougher, with a different feel then the more polished later ones. It's really fun to read the first SotL then read the first Protecter of the Small, just to see the way her style changes.

I've noticed that her first books deal more with the narrative and plot and less with details. In some ways I like that better, since too many details tend to bore me but I think that T. P. has done a good job of finding a balance between narrative/plot and detailed descriptions.

I've just recently finished reading Song of the Lioness, and think it's about time to reread Protector of the Small--but I think you may be right, Krilana. Details and physical setting seem to be what is more elaborated on as Pierce's writing has evolved. The bare-bones dialogue of SotL was more than enough for those of use with active imaginations to enjoy, but I did so like the immersive description of the Trickster novels.

Well, here's a question for everyone--out of those here who have already commented on our Authoress' craft, who actually considers themselves next in line for her title? That is to say, who here writes? And if so, what?

I write first person stories in my free time. It takes awhile though...

You sound like a teacher.

But anyway, I write, as much as I can. I have a blog and I love writing short stories. My short stories are usually in first person POV but I'm working on something longer right now (that's what she said, lawl) that's in third person POV. It's kind of new for me because I'm used to writing in first person.

I love how in all of TP's books you see the characters grow and relationships grow too. I hate books where the character falls in love at first sight. I just hate it.

And I write, not very well, but I do write. I try to write stories, but around 20 pages or so I just kind of stop...

That's one of the things I absolutely love about Pierce's books as well. The romantic aspect of her books is very well done, and don't overpower any other aspect of the story or its characters.

I hear that problem you have. You get an idea, you start writing it, and then the inspiration fades away. I get that, too. Usually, though, I spend it on outlining stories more than just writing them. It gives me direction and helps me keep my inspiration going since I don't have to stick with just one track--I can jump in anywhere. Of course, I haven't had much luck writing recently. ^_^U
