By mercenaries, I don't mean the class mercenaries. I'm talking about a group of mercenaries such as Griel's Mercenaries or Gerik's mercenaries.
When FE6 was introduced, there was a group of mercenaries followed by Dieck. Ever since then, there is a group of mercenaries in each game just like the tradition of the red and green cavalries in FE.
Dieck's mercenaries from FE6. Gerik's mercenaries from FE8. Griel's mercenaries (before becoming Ike's mercenaries) from FE9 and 10. And Ogma's mercenaries from the remake of FE1 (or FE11 as you prefer it.)
In addition, even though FE7 doesn't have a group of mercenaries like the others, I may like to point out that Rath does have a group of mercenaries with him in the chapter Kinship's Bond (chapter 21/22). And in my opinion, the Black Fang are kinda like a group of mercenaries even though they're a group of assassins, killing corrupted nobles. >>;
So tell us which group of mercenaries is the best among the best. :3

Mercenaries as a class are all good. There really isn't a bad Merc/Hero.
But as for which mercenary group dominates, frankly it'd have to be the Greil Mercenaries. In both games the appear in, a large number of the people in the group are among the best characters in the game. The other mercenary groups all have good characters (usually one or two among the best of the cast for those games, too), but not on the level of the Greil Mercenaries.
Dieck's Mercenary group has Dieck himself, with Lott as the best Fighter in the game and Thany as arguably the best peg (there are plenty of better characters than the latter two, but they're up there).
Gerik's group features the excellent Gerik and the only Dancer in the game. Both excellent. But Marisa is easily outclassed.
Ogma's group has Ogma... and one of the fighters is more usable than the other.
But the Greil Mercenaries... have: -Ike, who is broken, in both games. -Titania, who is tied with Seth for best Jeigan in FE9 and isnt hindered by her promotion at all in FE10 -Oscar, top tier in FE9 and still very good in FE10 -Boyd, top tier in FE9 and considered one of the best Fighters in FE history, and still very good in FE10 -Soren, usually argued to be the best magic user in FE10 and certainly among the best in FE9 -Shinon, who is fabulous in FE10 and has good growths if you bother with him in FE9 -Gatrie, who has remarkably fabulous growths in FE10 and is good in FE9 as well -Mia, very solid in both games
Their other members aren't as fabulous, but none of them really suck (Rolf might be debatable...).
But the sheer number of people in the Greil Mercenaries combined with how effective so many of them are cement them at the top.

No other FE mercenary group has done that.) But yeah, come on, Greil Mercenaries hands down. FE9 has everything to do with them, for goodness' sake. As for FD's Greil Mercenary comments, most of it I agree with, although Mia doesn't seem all that good in FE9. Don't get me wrong, she has fantastic availability. Considering how Shinon and Gatrie leave you just as Mia shows up, she could be one of the best-timed units I've seen in the FE games I've played. However, her stats (other than the obvious Speed and Skill) aren't that great, plus let's face it, FE9 was not terribly kind to Swordmasters (weapons generally had very high accuracy, plus there was a GREAT lack of terrain and most enemies' weapons were lances, which trump swords). In addition, for being so perky and energetic, Mia's supports are few and far between--there's only Rhys (Who has a wide range of supports to work with anyway), Ilyana (Who's... okay, but pales in comparison to Soren), and Largo (I used him once, actually; he wasn't bad, though that may have been an Easy mode run). I've heard tell she's much better in FE10, but again, I never played that. (And again, darn you IS for denying an ending with Rhys.)

Maji has always been my favourite.

I'm just attached to the Greil Mercenaries heart No other mercenary group has really stuck out as much as they did, anyway =P Probably because 9/10 were the first games not to center around a Lord (full-time).
