Alright, so I'm going into the Coast Guard on June 22nd and know very little about the Army so I figured this was the place to go.
Recently my step-brother's best friend was let go from the Army by Medical Discharge (crashed his motorcycle and snapped his collar bone, with no insurance or bike license). So now he has been living with us for a little over three months and every once in a while he goes on his little spill about his time in the Army. It typically didn't bother me until his stories started to sound like...well frankly they sound like he's trying to blow smoke up my a**.
I know that he joined the Army when he was eighteen and was discharged about a month after he turned nineteen due to the accident. Onto the story; every time he talks to me about his time in the Army he tells me about all the things he's done but they all seem rather far-fetched except for his MOS which was 13D. I don't have a problem accepting that he was a part of Field Artillery, but what bugs me is that he has tried to tell me that he has completed Airborne School, Sniper School, been transferred to two duty stations, and gone on a three month deployment to Iraq all within about a year (a little less if you take out the two months for Basic).
Unless I'm mistaken, I was under the impression that the only way you could go through Sniper School was if you had it already set in your contract, or if you were a part of Infantry. And I also thought that you could only go through Airborne School if it was in your contract. It just doesn't make sense to me for the Army to waste money training a person to become a Sniper, and jump from planes, yet have him go into Field Artillery.
I'd just like a little clarification because I am starting to get irritated with him telling me all of this. Thanks for your help.

It's possible, but highly unlikely.
Airborne School goes for about 3 weeks. Sniper School goes for about 5 weeks. So you're looking at about 2 solid months of training from specialty schools alone. Add his 3 months of deployment in Iraq and he's got 5 months already, leaving 7 months of duty.
Question: is he Enlisted or Officer? Because it makes a difference.
Again, he might be telling the truth; you may want to double-check your sources.

He was Enlisted. The combination of the three different school times, as well as the deployment are what leave me questioning the validity of his statements.

Ah, that explains it [somewhat]. Remember the circumstances he is in:
1) It's the Army. You get the worst kind of stories from people in the Army. Whether it's unfair treatment or sudden relocation or whatever, the Army ******** up a lot (and I do stress that word), giving enough base for someone to be upset. 2) He was Enlisted, which basically means you can't decide for yourself for s**t. Officers have more leeway, since they get to choose where they want to branch. 3) His age. From the years you've mentioned, it looks like he's still young. What's more notable is the age in which he joined the military [18]. Being thrown into a hostile environment at such a young age could do more harm than help. Maybe he just wasn't prepared for the rapid rates of change.
I'm not trying to call your step-brother's best friend a p***y and he can come kick my a** if he so desires. Rather, I'm making an assumption based on my knowledge and understanding of his situation. In my opinion: he's just sore at the military in general for ******** him over. He needs an outlet to talk and he figures you'd be a good audience since you're joining the Coast Guard.
Again, that's my opinion. Check your sources, as I've stated before.

Any one can go Airborne. I'm a 19kilo. M1A1/A2/Sep crew member (Tanker) We can even go to Airborne school but yet we can not get into a Airborne unit because we are not needed... Its just mostly for Promotion points and another badge.
Also I call bullshit. No unit deploys for under 4 months unless they are Rangers. Which only have 4 to 5 month deployments because of how shitty there living conditions are and they mostly get put in the worst areas. Happens to Infantry, Tankers, and Scouts to but hey we deal with what we get.
You got two months for just regular basic and he might of had another month of AIT (Don't know) Which has him at 3 months total... Airborne school thats another month in a half so we are at 4 1/2 months Sniper school thats another 5 weeks so we are at 5 3/4's and then NTC which puts you at 6 3/4's and then the deployment which is 9 3/4's
So far he has spent almost 10 months not including PCS time and how long he was in reception... So yeah I pretty much. Oh also 13D's can't be snipers.

Thanks for the answers. I pretty much figured he was full of s**t when he told me he went through sniper school and was a 13D. I posted this same thread on Military.com under the Army General Discussion board and everyone told me the same thing; he's lying. Unfortunately the guy has a problem with lying almost 24/7. Found a little bit of dirt on him that should shut him up for a good long while.

hahaha i Fing hate 13D and there 13B buddys. As a 13M there is much bad blood between us and the 13B. 13D's work hand in hand with 13B, to were we as 13M get 13P
now a three month deployment... Not even airforce gets that, it's 6 months or, also does he have a combat patch. as a 13D he would have been attached to his fox brty. (Or 13B) on the guns. he would have been with them and those guys go for a year at a time. Also were was he stationed? Was it bragg? if he was here at Fort sill then he was lying about deployment, and those are the worst of people.

I think he said that he was at Ft. Sill once, but his latest duty station was at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX. The next time he bothers to try and blow smoke up my a** I'm just going to request his DD-214. That should be more than enough to shut him up. His exact words were, "my unit was sent to Iraq to put the previous unit on leave (vacation) and then they sent us back after three months." Everyone I've talked to has said the shortest deployments they've seen have been for Rangers which lasts for four months at minimum.

You cant even go to Sniper school until you have been in for 2 years. Qualifications of 23/40 does not count as a sniper. Sniper school is offered to a very specific group of soldiers. Airborn aint much really that great in my mind. i could be wrong but the PCS to two different duty stations in less then a year is highly unlikely and the Army does not do 3 month rotations unless he was a p***y and threatened to kill himself and got sent home early leaving his fellow soldiers to pick up his slack. Your assumption of smoke blowing is has a 99% chance of being correct.
