Who: Vyn and Ripley.
When: Midday.
Where: Gambino highstreet.
Weather: Not a cloud in the sky, the temperature is soaring.

Vyn had intended this trip to town to be short and sweet. Catch the bus, arrive in the main street, pop briefly into the required shops and then catch the next bus back home. However, somewhere along the line she had become sidetracked. The lure of a sale in a nice clothes store had drawn her off her planned route and from there on she supposed that a bit of window shopping wouldn’t hurt. That window shopping had presented some delectable bargains to her and with her wallet unsurprisingly filled with more than enough money from Ethan she had indulged just a little...

She had now gained a heavy bag in each hand and the distance she was floating off the ground was significantly lower. Normally the rose would not act in such a spendthrift manner but what with the onset of summer her wardrobe had to be adapted significantly.

Hitching on bag higher she floated down the street, a bead of perspiration forming on her brow. The weather was very pleasant for most humans who seemed to lap up the sun. For the pale skinned raevan on the other hand, the glare of the fiery orb in the clear blue sky without even a summery breeze to cool her, this climate was exactly the opposite. Sighing she drifted to a patch of shade underneath an ornamental tree planted in the middle of the highstreet. Underneath the green canopy were two benches, one either side of the tree. One was already occupied by a rough looking man (a hat was on the floor in front of him, the glimmer of a few spare coins inside it) but the rose graciously settled herself on the free rest place.

Releasing the bags softly onto the floor she tried to fan herself delicately with one hand, the other resting lightly on the wooden seat of the bench. Even in the shade the heat was roasting her porcelain skin. She wished now that she had stayed true to her plan and consequently avoided the height of the heat... Even the brilliant bargains she had secured weren’t worth the swelteringly high temperature she was now enduring.

She would sit for a moment longer, then she’d have to get going again... The promise of the air conditioned penthouse was an inviting one and it hopefully wouldn’t take too long for the bus to arrive.

If it could be considered hot outside then Ripley hardly even noticed, the dark Egyptian Frei floating amongst the walking people without so much as a single care. If he were to honestly admit anything about the weather he more than likely would have been inclined to say it was a tad more humid than what he would have preferred, he liked dry heat, but since no one was asking he wasn't talking. Instead he kept about his floating pace, head above the level of some the humans, and every now and then he'd cast a glance back over his shoulder at the building the human female he'd accompanied today had entered.

Rong Wei had made a mentioned earlier in the day about needing to leave Durem and go to Gambino, a place Ripley had never heard of much less been to, yet arguments were halted once the pair were on the bus and arriving at an unknown location. Ripley's mood had instantly soured the moment they left the parlor and was still rather seething, yet Rong Wei had dropped him off to be by himself while she ran her errands. It seemed, at the moment, her priorities did not lie with him and she didn't care what happened in a place he was unfamiliar with.

So as it were he was still just floating around aimlessly, he assumed Rong Wei would either find him by the time it was time to leave, and soon his wanderings had lead him to a street full of human people. Almost instantly his nose wrinkled and his eyes narrowed at the sights and sounds; so many nosy things with faces he'd never seen before. There were benches lining the roads, even some trees here and there, and Ripley was about to turn and continue back the way he came when something caught the corner of his eyes - more specifically a someone.

Another Raeven, another female. It was good to know the numbers weren't all based in the male spectrum of things but Ripley was starting to wonder if there were more females to number over them. He'd have to ask Rong Wei later in an effort to find out more but for now it was entirely up to him in order to gather facts and information. Taking care to casually float over, not like he was making a direct beeline, the Frei made his way towards the bench and paused in his floating a few feet away.

"You seem exhausted. Are you alright?"

Vyn had her eyes half lidded as she rested in the shade. The warmth of the day was sapping her strength and a certain tiredness was overtaking her. However, when a stranger’s voice was directed at her, she widened her dark eyes again; glancing upwards to examine the dark skinned face addressing her.

I am fine, thank you..” She responded almost automatically, her voice a little guarded as she regarded the stranger’s features. Did she know him from somewhere? It was not usual for a stranger to address her in such a manner after all, usually a somewhat concerned query such as his was based of familiarity to some degree. However, all it took was for the rose’s eyes to crawl down his bare chest to the obsidian curl of a ribbon to realise that they had more in common than most other passerbys: They were both raevans.

Constructing a more welcoming expression onto her face she replaced the scrutinising glance with a brief smile. “It is a little too hot for me..” She explained, taking the hand she had previously been using to fan herself to push a lock of wine red hair from her flushed face, tucking it behind a sloped ear. “I have quite a few bags to carry too, so I was just resting.” She tapped one of the shopping bags with her hand, bowing her head towards the frei in a gesture of thanks for his concern.

All the while she was still regarding him in a casual manner. She had never seen him before and took interest in his exotic appearance. His hair was braided into tight rows ended in crimson beads; his eyes were made up with slanted makeup that Vyn admired. She had seen humans emulate that style, but it suited the boy much better than any of the humans she had seen doing it. Behind him his wings splayed out and were marked with basic feather shapes... They reminded the shadow slightly of Xiu’s stone wings, yet this frei’s wings were quite obviously from a very different culture and displayed a unique style of artistic design. Compared to her, and most other raevans that the rose knew, he was very different.

When basic examination of him was complete, eyes lingering lastly upon the jewellery residing around his neck and resting on his bare chest, the rose parted her lips once more, thinking it best to talk before her gaze and wordlessness aided to forming an awkward silence... “How are you..?

"I'm doing quite well, thank you for asking. At the risk of sounding rude I'd almost say that I'm enjoying the heat. It seems as though I like the weather far more than I thought I would."

It was true, he was practically soaking up the sun. It made him a bit more energetic in his floating too, and Ripley was glad he wasn't sweating or melting like this delicate figure before him seemed to be. He wondered what she was made of, since he was well aware now that each Raeven had something different about them, and he deducted that whatever was holding her together was clearly not meant to be out in the heat. Perhaps once they were more acquainted with one another he would ask her the source of her life, her soul, but for now that was probably a touch subject. Most women seemed touchy.

"If you need any help, I'd be more than glad to assist you. I obviously don't find this heat nearly as troubling as you do, and it'd be a shame for me to not offer my assistance if I am able. I also am without a destination or an agenda, so whatever you are needing I would be more than happy to oblige."

This really was an interesting way to pass the time while Rong Wei was off doing whatever it was she was, and it certainly gave him a chance to encounter and maybe develop a relationship with another Raeven. If Ripley had any hopes to reach his final goal in a timely manner he would need to know as many as possible, and this female was a step in the right direction.

"My name is Ripley, by the way. Forgive me for seeming so forward without introducing myself first."

Thank you Ripley... Your help would be... lovely.” Vyn responded, sighing with relief. The dark skinned lad certainly seemed warm and friendly and if the rose was quite honest she was glad that he had so generously offered to aid her.

He really did seem unaffected by the scorching heat with threatened to curl her petals and leave the flower crown as a dry husk! Vyn was envious of him. She liked the warmth and the pleasant heat of the sun against her skin only caused her to smile like any other sun lover. It just seemed as though her body was simply not equipped to do anything whilst soaking up the summer sun! She had not quite recovered in the shade yet and she hoped that the boy would not mind waiting in the tree’s protective shadow a little longer. She still had a glimmer of perspiration on her brow (rose scented) and even if she was to be alleviated the strain of carrying her purchases she still did not relish the idea of going back into the blazing heat just yet.

Extending her wings slightly, she gave them a little flap in an attempt to circulate a breeze. It did not do much to help and what little air was wafted was too stagnant and warm to produce any noticeable relief from the heat. However, in moving her wings in that manner a curious question arose in the rose’s thoughts; one that could only be answered by simply asking. “Can you do this?” Stretching her bat-like leathery wings to full span and moving them she looked at him contemplatively. Of course, she hoped the other would not take offence from the out of the blue query, but the interestingly designed wings, whilst aesthetically pleasing, did not look all that practical. Could he even use them for flight when he got older? The same question applied to Xiu too. She had never seen him flap really.

It was a curious question indeed and so long as Ripley wasn’t shy in exploring such things, one that would be answered in next to no time.

"Can I do what? Move my wings?"

Ripley had been watching this unnamed female Frei move hers around as though she were trying to fan herself, and Ripley glanced over his dark shoulder at the two objects that jingled with his faint movement. It was a strange thought to have, that he'd never given much time or effort into actually trying to move his wings around on his own, and with a smile he decided to respond.

"To be honest, I don't think I've ever tried to move my wings while thinking about it, though I do know that they can move on their own. My hu....my Hu Rong Wei tells me that she often sees them splayed out when I'm upset over something, so I think my wings move more on instinct than with me telling them what to do."

Ripley turned his face back to his wings as he tried to give one a wiggle, though he shook his head because he likely expected it to happen just as it did. He couldn't move them on his own it seemed, they would have to do it on reflex - or else he'd need to practice doing it to actually get it in gear.

"I'm thinking my wings might be a bit too small, or perhaps too hard? I cannot bend them like you do, but I can move them up and down. Yours look more like they'd be able to bend without too much trouble as it is."

The shadow nodded with interest as the other raevan gave a fully explained and enlightening response to her question. The well shaped answer banished the idea that this new face was newly born – after all, most freis struggled with speech and getting ideas across for quite a while after their birth, so this eloquently spoken male had to have been around for a little while. This thought made Vyn all the more appreciative of the Doctor’s work. After all, it meant that he had already created a large community of raevans, she was in no way alone and was still finding surprising new characters amongst her day to day routine.

Fanning her wings out once again and rotating them to their full flexibility she nodded. “Yes... I can do a lot with them.” She had seen other raevans with different membranes and ‘fingers’ on their wings... which she assumed gave them even more flexibility and control over their back bound appendages... But she was secretly glad that at least she wasn’t stuck with a relatively immobile pair like Ripley. “Maybe if you grow you’ll be able to move them more.” She suggested thinking on Xiu again.. He had grown and his wings had remained mostly the same – then again, it could be different for the black skinned raevan.

By now she had cooled down sufficiently enough to consider braving the full heat of the day again. ‘Standing up’ she took a handful of bags and held them out slightly hesitantly to the other frei. “If you’re sure you wouldn’t mind... could you carry these...?” She kept the other half to herself. As much as she wanted to be rid of all of her luggage she felt inexplicably rude shunting all of the weight over to her interesting new acquaintance; Halving the load was good enough for the rose at the moment. Desiring to continue finding out more about the boy she picked up on something he had said earlier... An interesting name.

Is Hu Rong Wei your guardian?

Growth would allow him to move his wings? Hardly.

Ripley's thoughts on the issue remained basically the same since he knew he'd be going home to practice moving them of his own accord, but general understanding of a situation lead him to believe that if he couldn't move them now with full concentration on them he wouldn't be able to do it in the future. Perhaps if he broke a wing and made it have better joints then he could, but such ideas sounded ridiculous (and really, really painful).

"I would be more than glad to carry anything you ask of me. It'd be rude of me to refuse such a thing after I'm the one who offered."

The Egyptian easily gathered the bags that had been left to him in both of his hands, wanting to balance out the weight. He was certainly not a strong Raevan as practice at lifting things had come to show him recently but what he lacked in brawn Rong Wei said she made up with surprising intellect. It was the closest thing he'd gotten from the Chinese woman as a compliment so he kept much of it in mind. It was amusing that as he thought of her the conversation was taken by this female Frei in the direction of her, so Ripley chuckled a bit as he nodded his head.

"Yes, she's my caregiver of sorts. I'm actually here with her today but she's allowing me to wander while she gets something done. We don't come out to this part of the island very often so I was taking in all the sights and sounds. This place is a far cry from Durem, wouldn't you agree? Or is there where you are from?"
