The sun shone high in the sky, reflecting off the waves lapping at the shore of the lake.

Zaine had been lazing around the lake shore today, hoping to find some ladies. So far, no one had appeared. He had been lying there for a while, and the sun's rays warmed him, and made him drowzy. He was soon nodding off, fading in and out of consciousness.

A twig snapped somewhere nearby, and he woke with a start. He looked around for what had made the noise.

Zyanya glanced lightly at her hooves as she felt a twig break under them. Lifting her white socked leg, Zyanya took another step and avoided the branch she had broken as she stepped from the forest, shaking the leaves from her mane and tail as the sun swirled a bright spectrum around Zyanya's icy coat. Shutting her eyes for a moment because of the sudden light, Zyanya reopened her eyes to the lake, blinking slightly in the amazement. Few sources of water where Zyanya had come from were this large, and many would be frozen over anyway.

Observing closer, Zyanya noticed a very bright looking native to these lands looking around for something. Assuming it wasn't her, she stepped forward toward the waters, wanting to observe them closer. Afterall, she didn't speak unless spoken too, and didn't know if the Soquili would understand her anyway.

Zaine caught a flash of blue out of the corner of his eye. He turned to see what it was, and came upon the icy blue mare walking towards the water's edge.

He stood, and made his way over to the newcomer. He definitely hadn't ever seen her before. He decided to try and charm her.

He shook his mane out of his eyes and gave her his best crooked smile. "Well, hello there. What's a lovely young mare like you doing out near the lake all alone?"
PostPosted: Thu May 27, 2010 6:56 pm

Zyanya stared into the rippled surface of the lake waters, shifting her hooves under her slightly as she tried to find a settled footing. No matter where she went, the dirt always seemed too soft and weak. Unable to sustain her weight, though she weighed little compared to most of her kind. Out of the corner of her eye she saw the native approach her, but did nothing to stop nor acknowledge them yet. It wasn't in her nature to do so, and afterall, her fascination with the body of water was overpowering.

However, as conversation was initiated, Zyanya picked up her head and turned her one, ocean blue eye to the native. Careful observance made Zyanya realize he was doing all these subtle gestures to impress her, but she took no notice of such. Instead, she concentrated on his words. His words too, found way to impress her or flatter her, but Zyanya could not be flattered. She hadn't blushed in years, for little could faze the mare but her own follies that hurt others, but those were too rare, for she strived to protect.

"Good day. I've been exploring these lands and happened to stumble on this lake just now." She answered simply, her voice musical, and soft, despite its exetreme lack of use. Zyanya paused for the stallion, turning her gaze back to the lake. She was no one for idle chatter, and often spoke no more than she had to, which was part of what made her so mysterious. She rarely asked anything since she never felt the need too. Afterall, asking about things seemed rude to the respectful mare, for it was little or none of her business. She assumed that what needed to be said would be told to her, if they trusted her, whether by voice or by action. Perhaps she looked cold, but she simply saw no more meaning to words when those who can speak with silence were those who truly were close.

Zaine was a little taken aback that the mare hadn't swooned over his compliment. He tried again.

"You know, your coat is very beautiful. I love the way the blues remind me of the sky and it's changing hues."

He noticed that she was paying more attention to the water than to him. Hmm... perhaps she had never seen a lake before?

"Are you enjoying the view?" he asked. "It might get even better if you looked this way." He waggled his eyebrows at her.

Zyanya nodded abit at the stallion's compliment, but took no notice of the flattery involved. She took the phrase quite literally, even though she felt the compliment that preceded it. "The blues are of the skies, but more of ice. I lack the colors of the sunset and rise, as well as night." She replied simply, almost poetically. Zyanya's gaze had never left the waters as she spoke, intrigued by them, and her own reflection.

She had seen herself many times in the ice, her image distorted by its many ridges and cracks, unless it had frozen over a new surface at night. If it did though, Zyanya would have no time to seek her image, for the tribe would move as soon as it was done. Here though, her image was not distorted in ridges nor cracks, but by movement. The water lapped lazily across her face, and she noticed how her image changed with it. She was taken from these thoughts though, as the stallion spoke again. She nodded once more, picking her head up from her prior intriguement, and turned her head toward him as he told her of a better view.

While Zyanya was certainly not very dense, she took things rather too literally, particularily when she was given advice, and she started a leisurely walk past the stallion to see the view he had promised, slightly unaware he had meant himself, though those waggled eyebrows gave her the hint. "I do not see much difference from here." She answered, standing toward the lake again, though now, on the other side of the stallion.

"Ice..yeah..I can see where you're coming from." he replied, giving her another look-over. Her colors were kind of icy.

"Me? I'm a rainbow!" he said with a laugh, while giving her another brilliant smile. "Clearly I'm better looking than some water."

He watched her move to the other side of him, and realized she had taken him literally about the view.

He chuckled lightly. "I meant I'm the better view, honey, but that's alright. You can stare at the water if you want."

Changing the subject, he thought back on what she had said earlier. "So, uh... you said you were exploring. Have you never been here before? I could show you around a bit if you want." he offered.

Zyanya gave another nod as he replied to her comments on colors, her tail flicking lightly from side to side as she looked up into the skies and then back at the water. "Very much so. Colors against the darkness and light. I remember those stripes from another." She commented simply, remembering how one of her kin back in the tribe had distinct stripes that resembled the stallions, but they instead, were a white against a darker blue coat. Most her kin were blue, white or silver afterall. Simple protection, but it was effective to a point.

Taking little notice of his correction of her semi-mistake, Zyanya turned her head up to him as he changed the subject, blinking her one ocean eye at him. "No, I am a foreigner, as you would call it." She answered. "It would be nice to have a short guiding. Thank you." And with a simple bow of the head, Zyanya waited in her place for the stallion to start again.

Zaine thought on her response. "A foreigner eh? Where are you from? I don't think I've ever met someone from another land."

"Hmmm...let me think... I'm not sure where to start..." he mumbled to himself, trying to decide where he might start his guiding. "Oh I know, what about the river? Have you ever seen a river?" he asked, noting her fascination with water.

He had an idea then. He hoped to maybe break through her seemingly quiet exterior, and show her a little fun.

"So, uh, do you like to run? I thought maybe we could see who could get there first. All you have to do is run to the edge of this meadow, in that direction." He pointed with his front right hoof. "I don't have a prize for you, but I thought it might be fun. And I love a good race. You look like a fast lady." he smiled at her, hoping this was a good idea.

Zyanya blinked lightly as the stallion continued to talk to her. Few could deal with her cold and strange ways for very long. Then again though, this stallion seemed to have an eye for her, from observing his prior attitude and commentary. "From the north lands of ice. We have no name there, but it has homed my tribe for long whiles." She answered, watching him think with a semi-curious expression in her eye, tail flicking back and forth with untold patience.

A slight surprise came over Zyanya when the stallion had mentioned a river. She knew of them from tales, and had seen one on her journey, but never had the chance for a closer look. "I believe once." She answered, remembering the long waterway, nodding lightly, the feathers in her hair dancing. Another short surprise came over the young mare however, as the stallion challenged her to a race. She hadn't raced someone in many years, though her speed and agility had never lessened in that stretch of time due to her constant running. She glanced in the direction of his point, and nodded abit.

"Sounds fine to me. I accept your challenge." She stated, bowing once more, before turning in the direction of the river. Zyanya shifted her hooves slightly. She would have a rough start, due to being used to slippery ice or layers of snow to start on, but she had gotten used to simply running on this dirt. She would give it her all, no matter the challenge. Underestimation would do her no good.

"So you like the cold eh? I'll bet this is a big change for you here then. I don't like the winter myself. It's too...white," he chuckled, "I like colorful things, like myself. And you." he winked.

"Good, then you'll know where you need to stop. Okay now, let's line up here," he said as he moved to stand in line next to her, his front legs even with hers. "Now, I'll count to three, and we take off. The first one to actually run into the water, is the winner! Understand?"

Zaine looked ahead and set his mind on his target. He hadn't gotten to race in a while, and was ready for this. He limbered up his legs a bit, by raising one then the other. He shook out his mane, clearing his mind from nothing but the race.

"I'm ready if you are. Then I'll start the count." he said, a serious tone to his voice. He was usually a jokester, or a clown, vying for attention, but when it came to a race, he was very serious.

"Not so much like, but lived." Zyanya replied, nodding as he assumed these lands were a large change for her. It was very true that she was unused to such conditions, but she would adapt, just as everyone had to. Zyanya didn't mind that the stallion cared not of the winter. Zyanya herself, never knew of the seasons until this journey she had taken. She had lived winter for all her years, and now, she will live spring, summer, and fall. Colorful was okay, but white was perfect as well. It didn't really matter to Zyanya, as long as she could live through it.

With a few short nods, Zyanya prepared herself for the beginning of the race. She shifted her silver hooves from beneath her and stared straight ahead, never once looking at the young stallion again as he told her the curcumstances, and then also prepared. She was intense, and adrenaline began coursing through her. Control, speed, power. She would give this her all, even if her start would be less than graceful. With one last nod at the stallion, Zyanya prepared herself for the race start, her eyes trained on her target, the water.

Zaine watched her as she prepared herself for the start. Once she nodded that she was ready, he turned back to focus on the finish line. He took a couple of deep breaths and let them out, clearing his mind.

"Okay. Starting the count. Three....two....one....GO!" he said in a loud voice.

On the go, he took off, his hooves quickly gaining momentum. His mane and tail blew straight out behind him from the speed. He had taken the lead!

"Yes! he thought, "I'm going to win! Surely that will impress her." He smiled to himself, and kept up his pace.

Adrenalin pumped through his body as their hooves pounded the earth. His breath came laboriously as he ran, and his legs began to ache from the lack of a good stretch. He could hear the mare not far behind him, and it sounded like she was gaining!

Just as predicted, the stallion easily got an early lead as Zyanya's start was all too less than perfect and quite embarassing to say the least, but it failed to phase her as she got her footing and started her pace. He was fast, that was very true, but Zyanya was proving faster. Within moments she was already gaining heavy momentum and easily catching up to his tail as her hooves beat the dirt rythmically, steadily propelling her graceful form forward and slicing through the winds as she moved with such natural speed it could surprise any unprepared opponent. Where Zaine had failed to grab a stretch, Zyanya's muscles were so well built that they were used to such strain enough for the warm ups to be thrown aside for the most part. Course, it was always better, but Zyanya needed them not unless she was truly racing for stakes.

Without hesistation, Zyanya continued pushing herself further, gaining speed with every hoofbeat, and soon reaching the stallion's tail, her own mane and tail flying wildly behind her, the wind tossing them almost violently, despite how calm and relaxed Zyanya was. She neither showed any weakness, even after reaching such unbelievable speeds, her breath controlled, so as not to choke on air, and the adrenaline coursing through her driving her forward fast and hard, as she began to fight head on with the stallion for the lead.

He could hear her advancing, and soon, she was running right beside her. "Oh no you don't!" he thought, pushing himself harder. Sweat now rolled down his face and back.

He glanced over to her, and saw that she was close to taking the lead. He returned his focus to the river, and pushed himself to run faster. It looked as if she was going to win, no matter what he did. Had he bitten off more than he could chew?
