How many of you would be happy with a synthetic diamond as an wedding ring?
I've often said I don't want to get married and I stand by that. But I think if I was in a long term relationship, I'd want something like a ring as a symbol of that (and to keep people away...). I wouldn't want a huge fancy diamond rock. Just something very simple and very small. I also kind of want to wear the ring on a necklace, I'm not sure why.
And I've been looking into synthetic diamonds and they're flawless, virtually impossible to tell from a real diamond. They're tons cheaper (or rather, they're worth what they're actually worth, because diamond prices are outrageous given they're not even very rare). Oh and no one died for them and they're not products of a horribly immoral industry.
Having talked to some friends though, they seem staunchly against the idea, saying it seems cheap and tacky or something.

I would be perfectly fine with synthetic gems. Hell, I'd even prefer that since it would make things easier on my fiancee and little kids didn't have to die for my ring. I want something small to begin with, but having synthetic diamonds just seems more responsible.

Perfectly happy.
I've always thought spending a ton of money on jewelry is ******** retarded.

If I ever get married I fully plan on giving them a synthetic diamond or less than precious stone simply because no one can tell anyway. Hell, the size of the cuts of diamond they use on rings, you can't tell it apart from glass or high quality quartz anyway without super close inspection.

I want a real diamond, and plus can't you make sure they are blood-free diamonds? I have costume jewelry now, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that, but when I'm older and have money I want only high quality costume jewels (I'm allergic to cheap metal anyways, so it'd be smarter as some of mine make me itch or get a rash.) or real jewels. I would be mad if I found out my husband or fiance had gotten me a synthetic diamond ring and pretended it was real.

Streetlight Fights I want a real diamond, and plus can't you make sure they are blood-free diamonds? You can make sure they're "Blood free" diamonds or they might say they aren't "conflict diamonds" by them lying, basically. Also, a synthetic diamond is just as real as a "real" diamond, it just isn't mined by black people. It's all the same thing, it's just one comes from a lab where a bunch are made and another comes from a vault where millions just like it are stored and released in small quantities to pretend they're rare, when in fact they're incredibly abundant. Edit: Basically it's the same thing as when celebrities go to a famous jeweler who actually gets their stuff from the same people that Fred Meyer Jewelers gets, but his name is Jerry the Jeweler and he engraves a J on a standard silver ring so it ends up costing 300x as much. There's really no reason to get a "real" diamond other than wanting them to spend extra money on you, because lab created diamonds are often better than real ones, but you can get ones that also have flaws added to make them look like you got it at a mall.

I would be mad if I found out my husband or fiance had gotten me a synthetic diamond ring and pretended it was real. It is possible to find 'conflict free' diamonds. Most of these are diamonds not mined from Africa and mined somewhere else, for example Canada. The problem is, you can't trust this stuff entirely. There's something called the Kimberly Process to evaluate and make sure the diamonds are conflict free. However, given that they expel members sometimes, such as the Republic of Congo, implies that they must have, before their expulsion, sold conflict diamonds as conflict-free. Anyway, as Edge said, it's a bit misleading to say 'real' and 'synthetic' diamond. The only difference between them is where they came from. Physically, chemically, structurally, they are both diamonds and exactly the same. The only difference is where they come from. The term 'real' is pretty biased, perhaps it'd be better to say 'mined' diamond versus 'synthetic' diamond.

Synthetic just means lab created. They take the minerals and base elements and go WEEE in as lab under millions of tons of heat and pressure to make lab created gems.
Anyway, I have an antique family heirloom, so that is what I am going to wear if I ever do. It's mine anyway, my mom should be giving it to me for my 30th I hope. It's supposed to be passed down to every grand daughter (but my grandmother die and my mom 'borrowed' it about 30 years ago to keep my greedy aunt from claiming it.) and since it was mined before 1910 or something, I'm pretty sure someone died for it.

I don't even really want a diamond. Pearls have a significance in my family, so I'd rather have one of those.
But, if synthetic were cheaper, I'd go with that.

I don't really mind for anything other than my engagement ring.
Unless my future husband wants to buy me a rock, then it can be synthetic. Unless he wants to spend larges sums of money for a real one. >>

I don't really like diamonds. They're really boring. I'd rather have a semi-precious stone, or a regular band with an intricate design. I prefer simple but elegant rings.

I'd much prefer just a plain gold wedding band. But I wouldn't mind if it wasn't a real diamond at all.
