Exactly what the title suggests. RIGs/CIs.
Personally... I hate the concept. A lot. Not because they cost money, no. I've been pouring money into this site since the first month I joined, 6 years ago. I understand the more the site grows the more money it needs, and getting an item in return for keeping this place alive is a good deal. Paying real money for virtual items is awwwwwright.
What is not awwwright is that with RIGs, you're not paying for a cool item. You're paying for the astronomically small chance to maybe win a cool item. Basically, using your real hard earned cash for virtual scratch tickets. Not cool. At all.
...On the other hand, RIG day is like Christmas to me. So many amazing items. T__T But you know they do this crap on purpose. Making the best items... and no guarantee you can ever have them (unless you buy more chances WINK WINK NUDGE NUDGE). Pure evil.
So tldr rant outta the way, love them or hate them? Discuss. <3

I've made no secret (neither here, nor anywhere else) of my burning, violent detestation of RIGs. Because it's pertinent to the conversation, I'll make a direct copy and paste of what I said to Rose, earlier. "Oh, chance is 100% of my problem. I mean since I moved and found the rent higher and the job prospects lower, I went from a 'Have' to a 'Have not' and haven't really been able to give the site as much money, but I don't resent those for whom this is not the case. I do resent the fact that they expect real money and give no promises in return. "In fact, if RIGs were gold-only, I don't think that I'd resent them. In fact, I think that would be a fine and much-needed gold-sink around here. There's something special about the combination of the Real Money/Random Prize that makes it so detestable. " I think nearly all of you are well familiar with my rationale. If not, it's summarized rather well above. The argument that many make is that RIGs are necessary to maintain the site and on this I call "Bullshit." Do you know how much they make on ads alone? I'd bet a large sum of gold that if they had to, they could run the site on those alone, with minimal staff cuts and almost no loss of speed or quality. Add in MCs, and you're already guaranteed a larger-than-strictly-needed staff. Add in MCs and you're already promised that the people in charge will be filthy-stinking rich. Add in aquariums, the people that buy GC to spend on Gold-store items, zOMG purchased and other Cash shop items and it already seems like enough to glut the wallet of even the greediest, right? Let me make it clear; At this point, I don't have any problems. Sure, the prices are a bit high, for pixels but I have no serious, irreconcilable problems with the arrangement. So far, so good. Then come the RIGs. This is a serious case of sticking it to the user and yes, if you buy them, you are helping them stick it to us. What's that, you say? You bought them, but you're blameless because you used gold? Sad to say, not so. That item was bought as a RIG by someone that KNEW he could sell it for gold. By buying it, you are telling him that he is right and promising that he can get what he wants by buying RIGs and he is even more likely to do it next time, thanks to you. Here, you may cry "hypocrisy" as I do, in fact, own one RIG item, myself. I bought the Shark tooth item, that gives me the fanged smile (the only one that doesn't look like s**t). I also even bought RIGs, of my own, but this was back before I knew what kind of monster they would become... And that brings me to the worst of it all. Another things that would make RIGs acceptable: using already existing items. If you just wanted to spin the wheel and see what you'd get, I would be a-okay with that... but that's not the case. Look at the items released over the last year. All of them. How many were released as gold shop updates, cash shop updates, or EI poses? Okay. Now how many of them were released as part of a RIG? Yeah... Starting to see it now, aren't you? If you bought a RIG, from anyone, then you are telling Gaia that it's fine to stick it to us by allowing about 50% of all items released (or at least all of the ones that we really want) to be given to us only if we are willing to piss away real money and hope for the best or pay someone else who has. And that, my friends, is why RIGs are killing Gaia.

Matasoga Add in MCs, and you're already guaranteed a larger-than-strictly-needed staff. Add in EIs and you're already promised that the people in charge will be filthy-stinking rich. Fixed. =P But yeah, basically all of that. The worst thing though, is they'll probably never stop. They've found the ultimate system, and now will put only the best stuff into a million to one gamble. Forever. And to be honest I don't think theres anything we can do to change that. Lets be real. Everyone loves the items. They are, quite intentionally, of the highest quality and of some of the things most demanded by users. So a sitewide boycott? Not gonna happen. It truly is the cancer thats poisoning the site. And I'm actually ashamed to admit to playing a part in feeding it. But these days, its either dig in to the buffet of s**t, or miss out. And you better believe they know it.

And you better believe they know it. Oh, no. There is a way to fix it. If every user (or even enough of them) suddenly stopped dead, never bought another RIG, it would stop being cost effective to make them. That would cure it from Gaia, forever. It should be more clear than ever that it's all about money and the only ethic that Gaia has is against giving us back-wings. Of course the very notion is absurd. The site is full enough of mindless sheep and consumer whores with access to mommy and daddy's credit cards that this will never happen. I'm not even advocating a cessation of spending any money on Gaia. Buy the MCs, buy the EIs, fill your aquarium... Just wise up and stop buying the RIGs. That is the advice that I pass along to you... All of you. It's in your own best interests to follow it.

Still, I don't mind the MCs and other things, it's just the random prize ones that don't seem right, to me.

I hope no one minds me digging up a thread that's been dead for over a month but Matasoga did direct me to it so I guess the implication is that it's okay to make a comment here.
Firstly, I just want to make clear that I stopped supporting Gaia financially a long time ago. It used to be that every month I sent money to Gaia for a fair number of Donation Letters (as they were called back then). But that all stopped after a number of things that Gaia did. One of them being RIGS.
When Cash Shops started coming out I can't say I was thrilled but I didn't have a problem with them on moral grounds. Ultimately Cash Shops are no more than an extension of MCs really. A straight forward sale of a pixil item for money. I was okay with buying MCs before and I would have been okay with buying CS items if I saw something I really wanted. But when they came out with RIGS for me Gaia had crossed the line.
As we all know a large percentage of Gaia's users are minors, that is; under 18. They can't drink, they can't smoke and they sure as s**t can't buy lottery tickets. Yes, RIGS are legal, obviously or Gaia would be in a crapload of legal trouble by now. Some people liken RIGS to those machines you typically find at supermarkets where the kiddies put in a quarter or 50 cents and get some little crappy trinket. The main difference being I have yet to see the little kiddies feeding those machines quarters by the handful in a fevered attempt to get that one rare supercool item.
From the Information for Parents page:
"Is Gaia safe?
Gaia's staff is committed to keeping Gaia safe for teens."
As one user put it RIGS are "thinly designed gambling"(I think he meant thinly disguised). Excellent, thinly disguised gambling for teens! What could be safer than helping kids get a headstart on a lifelong gambling addiction? And using their parents' credit cards no less.
Gaia has done some pretty detestable things but RIGS have to be the worst damn money hungry hypocritical whore tactic so far. How will Darth Sherman and his merry band of bandits top that one I wonder? No doubt Sherman spent his teen years stealing lunch money from Elementary students to gain the practical experience needed to run Gaia.

Yes, for the record, if I feel that a topic is finished, I send it to the archives. Otherwise, it's just waiting (days, weeks, months, or even years) to be reactivated. Necromancy is not a problem, here. Threads that are left in this sub-forum are not dead; just sleeping. Otherwise, very well put.

OP here. Gotta say, "thinly disguised gambling" describes the issue perfectly. Gotta wonder what loophole they're using to be able to legally do this... gonk

Matasoga And the best part is: It's still a RIG! Exactly. Gaia has the best of both worlds; introducing the kiddies to gambling AND profiteering off of the worst environmental disaster in US history in the guise of charity. It's a win-win situation. Hell, the only way Gaia could get more slimy at this point is to either start selling used cars or to open up their own law firm.
