devart- This is more what he'd look like as an adult. I originally wrote this character for another rp but he never actually got played, so I've shredded him back down to candidate to see what happens.
Character Name: Salin
Age: 18
Sexual Orientation: Straight but not uptight
Craft/Rank: Weyrbrat
History: Growing up in the weyr, Salin has always been sure, if of nothing else, that his position in life was fairly secure. It seemed obvious that he'd be a dragon rider, and he was confident that he'd impress the second his foot hit the sands for the first time. So far that hasn't happened, and although he has time left, he's beginning to feel doubt, and is looking to try and secure his position in other ways.
He's extremely good at being politically neutral, even invisible if he needs to, until a situation resolves, and stepping in neatly behind the winner to pat them on the back, and even better at swallowing his own opinions on the matter unless they seem to fit with the dominant majority, and he's used this ability to try and protect his place and future at the weyr while he debates a future in which he might actually -not- impress, though he's still holding out hope.
One truth that some do know about him is that he does consider weyrborn candidates somewhat superior to holdborn, and therefore finds it considerably more frustrating to see them impress when he has not, though he tries to keep this opinion selective to a look of disdain. Again, why hurt his political position should one of the hold born someday rise to power above him?
Description:
One of the more notable traits about Salin is his somewhat unusual (but not unheard of) complexion. His skin is a darker almost milk chocolate tone, a throw back to history, and his hair is only a few shades darker, making his black eyes look somewhat more intense. It's often clear when he's thinking about something, but his faint smile and cryptic stare don't readily reveal what.
He cheerfully admits to being somewhat vein. He adores wearing rich colors that emphasize his unusual skin-tone, enjoying the feeling of being exotic. A particular trait of which he's vain is his hair, which he'll continue to wear long, and tied made of braids, bound with a scarf or with leather to keep it out of the way, as long as he can possibly get away with it. He uses sweet oils and a few other herbal tricks to keep it from becoming 'aromatic' or buggy, and has even been known to wear beads in it.
He's keenly aware of the cost of his vanities, and pinches and saves to get what he can for now, though mostly a the moment, it's a few scarves and ornate leather for his hair.
Personality:
With Salin: everything revolves around not making social or political waves, but riding the waves of others. He has no plans to lead the weyr, or even to lead a wing, but he wouldn't mind being wing second, or the power behind the throne, as it were. He's ambitious, but he'd rather not be the center of attention so much as he wants to secure himself a position that he admits, he does in fact think he deserves, as a dragon rider. Is that arrogant? Well he'll admit that yes, even with the atypes to raise the number of dragons at a hatching, yes it rather is, but doesn't -everyone-, he'll insist, have an ambition thats frankly a bit arrogant?
He's rarely intentionally cruel in his social games, and so far hasn't come up against the idea that someday he may yet be caught up in something where he can't pretend to agree with the majority, or where he may even be forced to admit that his games have left him with very few true friends, so much as tactically significant acquaintances.
He's -certainly- never considered that it's his own vagaries that may be the reason he's still standing and hoping to impress.
Other:
Although he doesn't like to openly admit interest in other professions other than dragon riding, Salin does have an guarded interest in the processes involved in making clothing. Dying and detailing especially are fascinating to him, since he reasons that if he knew how to do these things himself, he'd at least have access to some of the nicer garments out there at a significantly reduced cost. He's even more loathe to admit that, if he didn't have a dragon, he might even be content trying to learn such skills. This leads to a certain degree of fascination with others who do have these skills, hold born or not, and such individuals may even have the upper hand in getting him to warm to them as fellow candidates.
Just don't ask him to admit it in front of anyone.
...yet.
((ooc: Salin probably comes off as a bit arrogant... and he is. He definitely feels a bit entitled, but ooc I know that what he thinks he deserves and what he needs are two different animals. If he sounds too much like he's pitched at one color, please tell me))
