From the outside, the Red Lion Tavern is a rather modest looking building. Covered in stucco with a red tile roof, this modest medium sized building boasts a hand painted wooden shield shaped sign hanging to the right of a large oak door on an iron sign arm with the picture of Titus, the majestic red lion, upon it. The Red Lion has a colorful history to it. In the beginning, the building used to be home to the Hammer and Claw, a tavern owned by the Fattorino Crime Syndicate. The Hammer and Claw, under the guise of an airship rest stop, was a meeting place where many illegal mafia activities were conceived. After the Denia Uprising, the Hammer and Claw was reborn as the Red Lion and turned into a respectable tavern and popular local social spot.

Inside, the tavern is full of round free standing tables and booths that line the north, eastern, and half of the western walls of the tavern. In the middle of the room, is a large rectangular bar made of oak with a series of bar stools running the perimeter except for a four foot section of the western side. The bar stools are a modest combination of dark brown leather and oak with a matching back to them. Hanging from the ceiling, is a large oak glass rack with a series of hooks that hold porcelain and stoneware steins with numbers painted on the bottom. The steins are owned by regular customers of the Red Lion.

The regulars to the Red Lion not only have their numbered steins but also favorite places to sit. It is known throughout Denia who the regulars of the Red Lion are and where they usually sit within the bar. These regulars are referred to by the locals as The Stein Club. To join the Stein Club for a non resident means a traveler, airship captain, or crew member will return to Porta Denia and return often. The Stein Club isn't just about getting a fire cured stein and a regular place to sit in the Red Lion, it's about becoming an honorary citizen of Porta Denia. It is an honor local members take quite seriously.

On any given day of the week, one will find Shirley Andrews seated at her usual place in the southwest corner of the bar. The seventy-one year old woman, known as Shirl to the bartenders, always has her pad of paper and a pen with her as she observes and records the comings and goings of the tavern patrons and townspeople for the Porta Denia Gazette. Locals and regulars know that pretty much anything and everything that goes on within the walls of the Red Lion will eventually end up in the town newspaper thanks to Shirley. However, the townspeople and regular customers of the Red Lion consider this to be a badge of honor. To be mentioned by Shirley is, to them at least, a sign that they have done something noteworthy in Porta Denia.

Another colorful local one might find around the Red Lion is Denwale Kounds. Denwale has credited the Red Lion with giving him the strength to be a socially active member of the community. However, he has been completely drunk when making these claims. The bartenders, staff, and other regulars of the Red Lion tell of how a meek socially shy Denwale enters the tavern, tries to speak to a few people with no success, and then drinks until he's drunk with confidence. People have actually said that they prefer the drunken confident Denwale to the sober shy and meek version he is before drinking. This has them doing whatever necessary to get and keep Denwale drunk. When sober, this card carrying member of the Stein club has often been heard questioning when and why he joined the stein club before the another round is poured for him.

The Red Lion tavern is open for all who wish to come in have a drink, a good bit of pub food, and socialize while they visit Porta Denia.

Forty-eight years, that was how long it had been since Aylin Rhys last stepped foot on the island. Forty-eight years since she had last seen the island in all its glory. The large red ship hanging off the bottom of the island was definitely a new addition and something Aylin would have to look into. However, at the moment that wasn't her concern. Aylin's main focus was the Red Lion Tavern. The tavern had been the last place Aylin had been in before she and Orrin boarded an airship back to the mainland below.

For Aylin, the Red Lion was the place where she and Orrin would rest up between journeys through the Gaian air routes. It was where they laughed and had long nights filled with nothing but each other in a secluded corner booth. It was where they were made honorary residents of Porta Denia with the issuing of two uniquely individual porcelain steins. It was the beginning of Aylin finally being able to look back on the "fake" wedding and laugh. The Red Lion was a part of Aylin's past and in essence a part of Aylin herself.

Walking through the door to the tavern Aylin saw a rather interesting sight. At one corner of the bar was an older human woman sitting at the bar writing on a pad of paper. On the eastern side of the bar was a group of people, and a bartender, all huddled around a single man who appeared to be nervously staring at a rather large stein.

"Come on Kounds drink it before we have to do the motions for you," a man in the group complained.

Aylin shook her head and walked over to the bar, her sword tapping her leg. The sound of her boots hitting the wooden floor caught the attention of a bartender who looked Aylin over and frowned. It was obvious from the look on his face that he thought Aylin was no older than fourteen.

"Excuse me young lady but you can't be in here. No on under the age of eighteen is allowed in here without an adult," the bartender scolded.

Aylin huffed and stared down the bartender for two minutes before replying, "I am an adult and I would like to have steins two five six eight and two five six nine please young man."

Reluctantly, the bartender pulled the aforementioned steins with a concerned look on his face. As he placed them on the bar, a soft gentle but commanding female voice spoke. "Frank, I know that voice and I know that person attached to it. I don't need to turn around to know that Miss Aylin is here and she wishes to have a drink. She is definitely old enough to be drinking and claiming those steins."

Taking her place at the bar Aylin reached for the stein with the crest of the falcon upon it, turned to the older human woman, and spoke to her, "It's good to see you again after forty-eight years Shirley. It's very good to see you."

Beatrice Lavésa would have loved to kick the door open; it was one of things she had gotten accustomed to lately, and something she greatly enjoyed, too. If you didn't go in with a bang in the shady underground pubs of Durem, then people would perhaps find reason to stare suspiciously at you. Here and now, however, where she supposed a somewhat more civilized tone was expected, she opened it just like any other civilized person would have; unremarkably, albeit perhaps a little bit too thoughtful. No one seemed to have noticed.

She made a brief inspection of the interior, and then headed off towards the bar, enjoying the thuds that her heavy boots made as they hit the floor. She noted the two women chatting, and raised an eyebrow. One of them seemed young, but that scarcely surprised her; occasionally the Durem bars would have far younger customers. The elderly lady surprised her somewhat, though; not a very common sight to her. Then again, Durem bar regulars generally didn't get far past forty.

"Something strong, thank you!" she urged the bartender, and sat down, shoving him a modest amount of Gold. "Well, strongest I can get for that, anyway."

When was the last time Petite socialized to another individual? There had never been a reason to speak more than a few words at each port she’d visited, and those were merely to inquire the “laws” and fees she would have to pay. Petite had docked the Capella an hour ago and managed to obtain only directions to a local tavern. Each individual who had instructed her to visit had expressed deep confidence that the patrons would be able to help her. What unnerved Petite was that she had not once stated what it was she was looking for.

And so, she stood quietly to gaze at the tavern, admiring the lion carved into a hanging, wooden sign. She debated, for a moment, whether or not to enter. It occurred to her that she had never been in a tavern. Nor had she properly investigated alcoholic beverages. Petite was not a drinker and she had quite a job on her hands, though time mattered little. Not to mention the few passing glances of pedestrians who could see the unknowing innocence shining in Petite’s eyes. She couldn’t help but smile, hitch her brown sack over her shoulder, and pull her goggles down around her neck, before venturing into the building.

"I am, after all, an adventurer." Petite stated with a shrug.

Upon entering the building, she realized it would likely prove a most interesting visit. The scent, as one could imagine, was quite a shock to Petite. Though she could faintly smell it outside, she realized those scents hardly did the place justice. She paused for a moment, pretending to look for a decent place to sit while adjusting to the sudden change. With a deep breath, she managed to regain her composure and chose to take a seat nearest the entrance. She set her pack down with a gentle thud and, unaware of what she should do at this point, she waited quietly to be noticed, taking notes on the individuals present.

The two women looked at each other for a moment after Aylin had spoke. Shirley saw before her someone who didn't look much older than she did on the day she left the port town. The major difference she noted was the color of her hair. It was now a bright bold golden blond. Shirley briefly wondered if Aylin was going through a phase of some kind and felt it best to let Aylin bring it up.

What Aylin saw hit her heart pretty hard. The young vibrant woman full of hopes and dreams had been replaced by a woman who had seen it all. Her hands were becoming wrinkled and the veins were starting to show through. Her neck looked as though it sagged a little and her hair looked thinner and lighter than it used to. Upon her face, Shirley wore thin gold rimmed reading glasses. Aylin let a small smile come across her face as Shirley spoke to her.

"So when will Mr. Orrin be joining us?" Shirley asked as she saw Aylin's face wash over with sorrow.

"He's been gone for eight years. How's Tom been..." Aylin stopped her reply when she realized Shirley was in the same position she was.

There they were two widows who had lost the men they loved both letting out a shared sad sigh. It was at that moment when a strong female voice pulled the two women away from their current conversation and brought their attention back to the people in the bar. Shirley looked over at the younger woman and surmised she might have been an adventurer of some type. Turning to her pad Shirley wrote down a few notes before taking a sip of the tall cool drink before her.

Aylin, on the other hand, took a small chug of the ale in her stein before turning to face the new woman at the bar. Frank, the bartender, was pouring out a glass of whiskey over some ice for her.

"So what brings you to Porta Denia?" Aylin asked her hoping to include her in the conversation with Shirley.

Beatrice nodded a thanks to bartending Frank as she grabbed hold of the glass. She took a small sip and glanced at the woman addressing her, smiling as slyly as she could with a glass up her lips.

"Curious 'round here, aren't we? I like that. As for my business; what'd you say generally brings people to Porta Denia?"

With that, she turned around where she sat, leaning with her elbows on the counter and the drink in a loose grip. Her gaze flew between the two women -- frowning a bit at the elderly one's jotting -- and the peculiar girl who had entered mere minutes after Beatrice's own arrival.

"Chug chug chug chug!" the loud rhythmic chanting from the group surrounding Denwale signaled the group was enjoying making the man drunk and interesting. It was a sound that had Shirley chuckling and shaking her head a bit as she jotted down a few more quick notes.

Aylin took quick note of Shirley's writings before turning her full attention to the young woman next to her. A small chuckle left Aylin's mouth at the realization that while Shirley Andrews had aged over the last forty-eight years she was still a young woman compared to her. Aylin thought for a brief moment before she answered the youngest woman's questioning.

"A lot of people come to Porta Denia because they're stopping over on the air routes. A lot come here looking for work. A lot are here because they do business with the cargo company on the island. There are those looking for a new start in their lives and still yet there are people looking for adventure and this is where they start from. Though, that might have changed some in the forty-eight years since I'd last stepped foot on the island," Aylin replied before taking another sip out of her stein.

Petite tried her best to follow the conversation passing between a woman she'd followed into the tavern and a woman who'd been sitting at the bar when Petite first entered. She noted the lack of proper introductions between the two. Or had she merely missed them over the sound of a small crowd shouting at another man in the midst of them, "Chug...what?" Petite asked, quietly observing the phenomenon.

The conversation between the two women was common. Questions were asked in order to better understand what each was dealing with. Petite found the group of shouting patrons more interesting. She quietly stood and walked towards the back of the group, peeking over the shoulder of a relatively muscular man. After narrowly avoiding the man's shoulder, she finally saw what the fuss was about.

The man in the middle looked tired. Petite arched her neck over the muscular man's shoulder to get a better look. Not only did the man in the middle look tired, but he was drinking his drink quickly and in great amounts. From the smell of the drink, Petite highly doubted it was healthy, though to be fair, she didn't know what was in it.

Thunk! That was the sound as Denwale slammed down the heavy stoneware stein on the bar. With a loud boisterous cheer the people around Denwale high-fived each other and began patting Denwale on the back. Denwale turned to face the tavern patrons with a somewhat uneasy look on his face. He knew that no matter how much he complained there was no stopping the tavern goers from forcing another round on him.

"Okay guys I've had three steins of beer are you satisfied yet?" Denwale wanted to know not really needing the answer.

"Three's not enough Kounds," a tall muscular man replied, "Billy get this man another one!"

Denwale quickly turned in his bar stool in hopes that he would be able to grab the stein before Billy, the younger of the two bartenders, poured another beer into it. He was too late though. While his back was turned Billy had already taken the stein knowing the crowd would want Denwale to drink even more. A moment later the stein was back in front of Denwale waiting for him to drink from it.

"What are you waiting for man, an invitation from mommy?" A bearded man called out in challenge.

It was at that moment something seemed to change inside Denwale. Grabbing the stein he turned to face the crowd around him, raised the stein in a mocking toast, and threw back his head to down the entire contents of the stein in three large gulps. With a loud thud Denwale slammed the stein down on the bar, raised his arms in victory, and let out a loud whooping holler.

"Deny is back boys and girls and he..." Denwale began before stopping for a moment to take note of a newcomer preening her neck over the shoulder of his muscular challenger, "He has laid eyes on a very lovely looking young woman. Hello baby."

Polaris for the most part remained quiet and kept to herself. Her single emerald eye scanning the room as Kaiser sat to her left sipping from his small cup. Within her own glass was not a form of ale or wine thought she did enjoy the occasional glass now and again. No she drank tea mostly due to the fact she was on duty and she had to remain fully alert at all times. A captain could never be caught off guard, especially one sporting military colors.

Kaiser looked up at Ophelia the large grey rat perching on Polaris's shoulder cleaning her face and growled at his captain, "Why do you have that damned filthy animal in here for?"

Polaris shot her little green first mate a strange look and raised one of her thin arched brows in a form of annoyance and questioning, "Funny...the same could be said of you love."

Twitching his nose a little and letting a tall ear flop over Kaiser turned away from the captain to avoid that judgmental stair of hers. Even with just the one eye she still had that same icy dictators type glare, the eye patch seemed to only make it worse. Running her hand into her small red waistcoat Polaris pulled out her golden pocket watch looking it over a minute to be certain she would not be late returning to the ship. When all was on time she settled down more watching the patrons of the Red Lion Tavern.

The usually people sipping back hard liquor and forgetting the issues at hand. Polaris never forgot the issues, ships were being attacked out there and as much as she wanted to keep clear of her usually victims of blame it had to be pirates. How she loathed the pirates with a great force larger then any royal military. She would die watching the last of them fall if she had to. Her whole life’s mission was to bring every last one of their ships down until she found the man who killed her parents.

Gazing back at his captain Kaiser felt a little worried tapping her lightly with a small green paw, "Capin you alright? You look rather distant how about I get you a real drink. Something that will put hair on your chest."

Polaris slammed her hand against the table. Her palm slapping the wood as her single eye focused back on the green rabbit, her voice sharp and stern. "No...No Kaiser I can not afford to let lose today. Perhaps tomorrow."

"You always say tomorrow and you never do let lose Capin. I think you need a vacation, I certainly do."

Polaris smiled at the rabbit patting him on the head lightly, "I know, it's just within my personality to never stop, never give up. I am one of the best for it and you know that. The Clockwork strikes fear into the hearts of the wicked as it should. I must always do my job for the people here and they need us now more then ever. This is your last drink Kaiser, you to much always be alert."

Letting his ears droop down the rabbit crossed his arms and grumbled mimicking her under his breath before slamming back the last of his drink. Sometimes he was tempted to just rip the captain's hat off her head and toss it across the room. Instead he found it more reputable to cause drama elsewhere by tossing his cup over his shoulder, his only true way he could act out against his captain. "Fine you frosty Jezebel I'll not have another if it makes you happy SIR."

It took Petite a few moments to realize the man was speaking to her. Had that man called her an infant? Her head tilted ever so slightly in confusion, “Baby? Surely, I do not look so young,” she commented and gently squeezed past the muscular man, careful not to touch him. She inspected the empty…oh, what would she call it? A mug? Maybe. Petite had never seen a cup so large before. One would have to love tea a great deal to fill it up and drink it. In any case, she inspected the empty thing, sniffing deeply. She let out a small cough and covered her mouth. This was obviously not meant for tea.

“May I ask why you drink this so quickly? Why is it entertaining?” Petite asked, smiling, “And would tea not be healthier for you?” She placed a hand over her cheek, “Or, at the very least, less…harsh on the senses?”

For a ship full of nerdy scientist types, the crew of the Star Seeker did enjoy taking their shore leave, a bit too much in the captain’s opinion. However, a trip away from the same faces Sil saw every day and the same food Sil had to suffer through was very much appreciated. After spending three weeks eating nothing but lunch meat, eggs, and mashed potatoes, the shape shifter’s stomach craved anything new. The Red Lion Tavern had been recommended by a number of her crew members, though it was more for the drinks than the food. Sil had made it a habit not to drink though, she had less control over her shifting while she was intoxicated, and turning into a nice pile of mushy flesh was not exactly her idea of fun.

Sil pushed open the door, removing the hat from her head. She combed her fingers through her blue gray hair in a futile attempt to tame her wild hat hair. The shifter then moved over to a booth, sliding down into a seat. She sat her black cap next to her, looking at the tavern around her. It had a nice cozy feel to it, or it would, if it were not for the yelling drunks on the opposite side of the room. One of her long, pointed black ears twitched a little as she thought she spotted one of her crew members amongst them, but soon enough she just shrugged it off. She did tell them to go off and have a good time, and if this was their definition of a good time there wasn’t too much she could do about it.

The shifter sunk down more into the both, messing with the decoration that adorned her cap. This time it was a red ribbon, held on by a bright red, round jewel. Sil often changed the decoration on her cap, either to match whatever she was wearing, or whatever mood she was in. She had an entire dresser drawer full of them back in her quarters on the ship, and she made it a nice habit to pick up a new one whenever she was at a port.

Sil sighed, glancing around the tavern again at the fellow people who were partaking there. She was hoping that a server would come to her to take her order, and she wouldn’t be forced to get up to the bar to at least get some food. She looked down at her stomach, a grumbling sound emitting from it. Sil sunk down a little, embarrassed by the sound. Had it been that long since she ate? Must have been, since she refused to eat the whatever was left on the ship yesterday before they reached the dock. The shifter sat back up, looking up and around the tavern again.

Denwale stood there smiling at the woman standing before him. She questioned the reasons behind his drinking. She wondered why he downed steinfuls of beer and played to the amusement of the tavern goers. Tea? That was for the socially week people like meek socially inept sober Denwale Kounds. But tea was also for beautiful ladies like Lin Fong. For the briefest of moments Denwale's focus and attention was distracted by thoughts of the love of his life, or at least he hoped she would become his love, Lin Fong. Looking the woman before him up and down Denwale smiled at her, raised his eyebrows twice, folded his arms, and replied to her.

"Little lady tea is for women with proper manners and socially week men. Me, I prefer beer. Beer is the drink of the manly man. And babe I'm as manly as they come." Denwale replied.

Denwale wasn't really a self centered jerk when drunk. He had what people referred to as that moment when he went from being socially meek to obnoxious before one more drink turned him into the man everyone, except Lin Fong, absolutely loved. Denwale was in what people called his hit on every woman he laid eyes on stage.

"I'm not sure what you mean by 'manly.' I've heard the term before, but...anyway, this beer is..." Petite stopped speaking for a moment, deciding on her words carefully, "...poisonous." She tapped her chin, thoughtfully, "Tea is not. Those women and, as you say, some men are going to live much longer by drinking it, unless they are inflicted with Aging."

With a small laugh, Petite rummaged through her pockets. She eventually decided what she was looking for was not with her and slipped back through the crowd, back to her bag. As quickly as she could, she searched through, pulling out a small, black pouch with a tiny, moon shaped bead tied to the end of the pull-string. Hurrying back, she undid the tie.

"These herbs are certainly healthier, and you could easily drink them rapidly as you do this...what did you call it?" Petite asked, opening the pouch to show the man, a large, toothy smile planted on her face.

As Polaris was trapped in the amusement of this simple conversation of tea Kaiser decided to wonder off on his own moving towards a newcomer to the tavern. He stopped a moment noticing Polaris was about to say something to him, perhaps point out a similar conversation the two had had once upon a time but before she started getting all sentimental and bringing back the good ol days he was out of hearing range. That was a blatant lie as well, thanks to his rabbit like ears he could hear from across the tavern.

He was curious about this girl with the pointy black ears, sort of like Polaris on a bad day. He wondered if sky captains came equipped with little black ears now a days. He could spot another captain miles away, that same snobby air about them and the decorated hats. Why they had to flaunt their power by wearing those silly hats was beyond him. Then again if he was a captain he would buy the biggest hat ever just to seem important.

Despite the fact he was half her size and nothing more then a bipedal green rabbit Kaiser still played his luck leaning against the bar and speaking up, "Ello doll, so what brings a pretty little thing like you in a place like this?" In other words he had used one of the oldest phrases known to men of all species. 'What is a girl like you doing in a place like this.'

Kaiser seemed ready to give her a compliment or comment on her ears. He figured they both had strange ears and didn't quite fit in so a relationship was perfectly possible. Yet as he opened his little mouth again a hand had reached down grabbing hi by the ears and lifting him off the ground. Cringing from shock and letting out a small yelp Kaiser kicked his little stubby legs angrily trying to figure out who had him when he recognized a familiar perfume. "Sorry Sir just taking the advantage of the moment. I thought I was free to come..."

Kaiser was cut off short as Polaris set him down on the bar top, "Well don't." Looking up to the woman with light colored hair Polaris apologized for her small rude crewmember, "I am sorry for his offensive words. Unfortunately like all other crew members he has a mind of his own and a mouth that runs off more then is needs to." She had been offended herself by her first mates behavior. His actions represented the actions of the rest of her crew and in turn her own actions and control as a captain. If she lost control of her crew then she could be seen as someone who lost control of her ship and Polaris was not about to seem weak.
