I can't recall well where I first read the following theory, but it's been on my mind quite a lot lately, so... here it goes.
ZUN actually thought of his games as theatrical plays that were being set in the human village, hence the phrases "Girls are now preparing" and the request to the player to "watch warmly until it is ready" while the game is loading. The black screen that used to follow the end of each stage was —or still is— supposed to be the curtain. He might or might not have dropped this idea after the release of PoFV, seeing how it is the last game to feature those phrases on the loading screen.
What do you think of this? Is it a plausible hypothesis, or is it too far-fetched and crazy?

This would coincide with something I heard a while back....
It was that ZUN originally started the Touhou Series only to get his musical talents known. It was later on that he realized "Hey, people actually like these kinds of games, I'll keep making 'em! *hic*".

It must have been after SoEW that he realized it then, since the games got better afterwards...according to information i've gathered.

I think that what really happened was that Project Shanghai Alice was originally a one-man musical band, and after some time ZUN decided to make games for it as well.

Hmmmmm......Then that'd be where the inspiration for Alice came from.....partly.

Touhou 1-5 wasn't made by ZUN alone.
Those where pre-TSA.
Alice was in one of the PC-98x games, therefore, was before Team Shangai Alice.

While I can understand the logic behind the theory, it's a shaky prospect at best. The 'preparing' aspect could easily just be the girls getting ready to leave for the adventure of the current game. Reimu has to get together her talismans, exorcising needles and various other miko implements, as well as her yin-yang orbs, not to mention whatever else requirements. Marisa, being a magician, likely has to prepare her spells. Considering that Patchouli is known to re-organize the spells she uses according to days of the week, it would make sense for Marisa to change her available spell line up to ones focused on the firepower she'd need to plow through unknown numbers of fairies and powerful youkai. Also Master Spark. Then there's the whole fact that their outfits change pretty much every game. As any guy would tell you, women take forever to pick out what to wear, mirite?
Other 'guest star' characters that appear for one game no doubt would also have similar preparations. In fact, recalling Sakuya's bad end from PCB, it basically says that Sakuya goes home for a change of clothes before heading back out.

Hmm.....Chou has a point. That could be the story, given that I myself have gotten that ending, and it says that almost word-for-word.
