Z'el had never been a late sleeper. At home, there had always been work to do and the sun had barely begun to rise before his mother was harping at him to wake up. As a Candidate at the Weyr, there had always been work to do and it was the Candidartemaster yelling at him rather than his mother. Now that he had Impessed Challiath? There was always work to do! The young dragonet had roused his rider before light had even touched the sky, begging for food and whimpering for an oiling. The Hatching had occurred only few days ago and the small black dragon was still weak, especially when his belly was empty. Z'el had hardly been prepared for the work any hatchling took, let alone an atypical one, but he was taking it in stride and doing his best to keep Challiath healthy and happy.

And Challiath certainly was happy, his belly full and his hide freshly oiled. Mine, what are we doing on the beach? Immediately after the oiling, Z'el had whisked them away to the beach - but not before stopping by the kitchens to borrow a few wooden bucket. The dragon nosed at one of the buckets dangling from his rider's hand. Chuckling, Z'el looked down to his dragon, squinting at him in the early morning light. "I told you, I'm going to show you how it's done!" Since they were up early, there was no point in wasting prime prank-pulling time.

But you never said what "it" was!, Challiath replied, snorting with some frustration. "You'll see, you'll see," the boy cooed to his dragon, the chuckle returning to his voice. He was going to turn Challiath into the perfect partner-in-crime, hehe! The two continued further down the beach, the dragon quiet for now but brimming with excitement and wonderment over what his rider was going to show him.

"And stop. We've gone far enough," Z'el said suddenly, turning around to glance at the Weyr looming in the distance. They couldn't be too close, lest they be caught, but they couldn't go too far either or Challiath would certainly tire out on the trip back. "All right, what we're going to do is put sand in these buckets." He set the buckets down, six in total, on the sand. Yeah, yeah, I can do that! I can do it fast too! But...why? Whatever the reason, this was going to be fun!

"Every morning the cooks make a giant pot of klah for the riders, crafters, general Weyr workers, and pretty much anyone who wants it. We're going to take the sand from these buckets and dump it into that pot," Z'el stated matter-of-factually, already scooping sand into the first bucket. But wouldn't that make them ang- Ooooh, I get it! Yeah, let's do it!

So the two set to work filling the buckets under the slowly rising sun. Challiath had turned a bucket onto its side and was attempting to rake sand into it using his claws. Though this method was slow going, Z'el praised the dragon's efforts and soon all six buckets were full. "Now, all we have to do is take them back to the Weyr, to the kitchen, and to the pot. Without getting caught, o' course" he said, wiping the excess sand from his hands onto his pants. What are we waiting for?! Soon the kitchen will be swarming with people, Challiath said, eagerly grabbing the handle of the bucket in his mouth and tugging..and promptly face planted, the weight of the bucket too much for his still-weak muscles.

"Woah, woah, Challiath, hold on, I can get them," Z'el said, rubbing the dragon's neck with concern after helping him up. No, I can do it. Just didn't a good 'nuff grip. And, once again, face planted after trying to haul the bucket. Exasperated, Z'el helped the small dragon up again. "Tell you what. You be the lookout. Without a lookout, we might get caught! Keep an eye out for people, and I'll carry the buckets," he suggested, hoping the young dragon would agree. Challaith was too new into the game to burn himself out.

Mmmm...okay! If anyone's about, I'll spot 'em!, he agreed, already on the look for potential prank ruiners. Satisfied, Z'el grabbed the buckets, three in each hand, and moved forward...before almost face planting himself! Buckets full of sand, as it turns out, are much heavier than empty ones. Groaning, Z'el turned an eye to the ever rising sun. The lighter it got, the more danger they had of being caught. And they couldn't just abandon the buckets, because that was suspicious all in itself.

So much for showing Challiath how it's done. Shards.

It would seem that habits did not change even after one Impressed and brought a new life into one's soul, as Tiepet had found herself waking long before the sun dared to rise in the sky over the Weyr. Her rest had been really light and hardly good, the strange newness of the Candidate barracks preventing her from feeling safe and familiar, so when she opened her eyes to the strange sounds of breathing humans and breathing dragons. . . she decided it was time to go back and sleep somewhere else. Her thoughts immediately went towards sleeping in the pens with the ovine herdbeasts, their familiar sounds and smells better than any blanket, but it was the stirring presence in her mind that reminded her kindly such an option could no longer ever come into play.

Mine? Are you okay?

Filanth had gotten up with her and the Green dragonet was soon on her feet and padding behind, yawning softly as she followed her rider. Tiepet had offered no explanation except that she wanted to be outside and away from a place she didn't know and the dragonet had agreed, more than willing to try something new. The dawn would arrive in less then a candlemark perhaps so it was not as though the middle of the night was upon them, but still the pair walked through the halls as if they were trying to be stealthy before the reached the open sands of the shoreline. Tiepet had places on the shore she liked to sleep and she surmised that Filanth would like them too, leaving the pair to cuddle together for a while in a far more restful sleep than before.

They were awoken by the gentle warmth that the rising sun provided, Filanth raising her head to great the dawn with swirling eyes of calm blue. The dragonet glanced down at the young girl who lay resting almost on her, one of the Shepherd's hands on her torso, and a gentle nudge of her nose roused Tiepet out of her slumber. Aside from the sun something else had woken the small Green - the sounds of voices. The surf and turf had only been gracing the pair with nature's calls so anything new certainly had been out of place and worth noting.

Mine, there are people on the sand. One of them looks like he's in trouble, should we help?

Tiepet merely groaned and rolled back over, ignoring the sand that was rolling down into her breeches from her movement. Filanth gave the dragon equivalent of a chuckle before she decided to do the hailing in this case - but only to the other dragon. Tiepet would have to deal with His.

Challiath, is yours alright?

It didn't occur to the dragon that perhaps the other two wouldn't be able to see them - they were sort of hidden.
