SETTING THE STAGE You're in a peculiar room. It's well-lit here, from lamps on the walls that burn with a peculiar flame considering they look too high to light. You can't see the ceiling, only an expanse of darkness if you look up -- which, inevitably, you are going to do, as you woke up sprawled on your back. As if you'd fallen there. As if you'd fallen from a very, very great height. But you're not hurt, you don't feel injured: curiouser and curiouser, all of this. The room's almost homey, a little quaint, the round walls are wooden and covered in paintings that are curved to fit the walls. Though perhaps you'd best not look too long at the paintings. There are some things that are decidedly more charming if you only glance at them. The floor here is strewn with strange things: broken chairs, tables, dresses, hand-mirrors, cabbages, dead crushed birds and baby shoes. Around you are round doors and round doorways on the walls, leading into similar rooms. There are tables set perfectly for a meal that will never be eaten there, dresses hung up on mirrors and doorways that go nowhere at all. Not much is clear, but this much is: the place you've come to doesn't make very much sense to you at all, and you get the distinct impression that it's not quite the same when you turn your back on it. What do you do?

It was very quiet.
This was the first clue. It helped her to realize, even before those golden eyes flickered open behind those black shades, that she was no longer where she had been. Her memory was a little hazy. Super Van thought she recalled cruising around downtown Destiny City on her trusty skateboard- thought she remembered the distinctly ominous blare of several car horns, and then there had been nothing. Until now.
It was good to be conscious.
She sat up, expecting, for a foolish moment, the precious familiarity of flowered wallpaper and the sound of John Jr banging on her bedroom door. Being a super hero was hard work, and it drained a lot of her energy. She'd been sleeping in more often lately, and her little brother had taken it upon himself to make sure she woke up. Vanessa appreciated this.
No clock counted the seconds as time ticked by, but it didn't take very long for Vanessa to realize that she was not, in fact, in bed at home. This was slightly hair-raising, and her heart sped up a little as she took in her surroundings. The round walls and their round doors reminded her vaguely of the hobbit movies her father liked to watch, and she couldn't help but wonder where they led to. Everything else begged to either be touched or examined, and the amateur heroine wasn't exactly sure where to start. There was so much stuff. It looked almost as though somebody had thrown a very strange, clearly wild party and then forgotten to clean up the mess- that, or been forced to leave in a hurry.
It occurred to her that she might have been kidnapped, and she wasn't sure how to feel about that. Being kidnapped certainly would have been an experience- something (awesome) to brag about, surely, if she outsmarted her captors and managed to escape. It would be another matter entirely if she ended up trapped here for the rest of eternity. Totally uncool.
"Might as well try a door," she talked to herself, unaware that there was any company in the room to be had, and hopped to her feet. Her cape got caught on a broken chair, and it rattled along behind her rather loudly until Super Van, back arched awkwardly, attempted to shake it free. "Dumb chair."

-Her eyes fluttered open wearily, staring into the darkness as she waited for her eyes to adjust. They didn't, to Polaris' surprise, which caused her to squint at the expanse that reached above her. It wasn't the soft pink silk canopy of her bed... speaking of which.. the surface beneath her seemed a bit more firm then her plush and extravogant bed, her fingers skidded along the surface, head turning to gaze curiously about.
Fire flickered from lamps that lined the walls, filling the room with light and warmth. There was wood, but she wasn't outside. The room was unfamiliar and yet.. not so much. It was kind of cozy... kind of warm. Not like Destiny City.. but like Alaska.. maybe she'd gone home? But when? Her eyes closed as she lifted a hand to her forehead trying hard to think back. It was blank mostly... school... team meetings... shopping.. she distinctly and clearly remembered shopping. Her last memory in fact was of knocking on gourds and squeezing melons.
With a soft groan she opened her eyes and shifted, finally noticing the soft feel of fur around her arm. Why was she wearing her sailor uniform...? Had she been in a fight? She could feel the beat of her heart quicken in her chest, sucking in a sharp breath taking in the subtle scent of rot and death along with it.
It was enough to bolt her upwards, smacking her shoulder into the table leg she'd been laying near, a hiss of surprise and mild pain escaping her. Her eyes darted frantically around. A fight probably wasn't far off. The place was trashed, broken chairs, tables, and even cracked glass littered the place. The smell though...
Her eyes scanned until they paused on feathers... feathers and bone and flesh. Her stomach churned, a mix of disoreiented fear and repulsion. Atleast it wasn't someone though.. she should have been reassured. She wasn't.
The sudden loud rattle of a chair shoot her attention upwards, calling out suddenly, with far more fear in her tone then she'd hoped.- "W.. who is it!? What are you doing!?"

The chair had rattled when Polaris sat up. The sounds of her flesh smacking against the table leg and her hiss of pain were drowned out by the roar of the broken chair as it was pulled along; over glass and vegetables and the rotting carcasses of birds. Super Van was surprised when a voice that was not her own sliced through the air. It sounded fearful, and made the hairs on her arms stand on end.
Vanessa's heart beat furiously, a little alarmed to discover that she wasn't as alone as she'd assumed. Having relinquished her cape of its hold on the remains of the chair, Super Van started in the direction of the voice. She was careless of where she stepped. Animal bones crunched audibly under her feet. A rubber ducky squeaked. She kicked it for fun, and it bounced -almost violently- off of the nearest wall.
"I'm- uh," Vanessa double-checked with her hands to make sure, "My friends call me Super Van. Actually, my enemies probably call me that too, now that I think of it."
Good super heroes only needed one name.
"I think I've been kidnapped. Or something- I dunno, I woke up two seconds ago." She spotted the end of one of Polaris's boots and peeked around the table with a friendly smile on her face. Her teeth were very white. "Who are you?"
In danger or not, Super Van was pretty certain that this sort of predicament could only lead to adventure. Adrenaline leaked into her veins. Vanessa buzzed with energy that she had no intentions of suppressing, bizarrely exited about the trouble they were probably in, and held her hand out to Polaris.
No youma had stirred at out of the rubble that encompassed them. Polaris, who'd sounded frightened and confused, was obviously not a bad guy. There was nothing to be afraid of. Yet.

-Any comfort she'd felt from the room had melted away in the brief seconds in which she waited for an answer. The crackle and squish of organic debris an uncomfortable accompaniment to the pictures she'd just happened to notice now. She sucked in a rough breath as the sudden Squ-squeak... squeak! for the ducky filled the air, tiny plastic critter careening into the wall.
Super Van was far less intimidating then everything else around. She seemed friendly enough... bright smile.. even her outfit... perhaps a little tacky.. but was she an ally? The girl was met with a blank stare that lasted long enough to be a little creepy before Polaris' hand reached out.- "Au.." -No that wasn't right. Pull yourself together girl. She was tired, she was confused, but obviously now was not the time to let things like that take control.-
"Super Sailor Polaris, guardian light from the north." -Lifting herself up with help, she brushed at her fuku softly, hoping against hope that she wasn't going to find some splattering of blood and bile staining her boots or gloves, finally offering the other girl something of a smile when she'd seemed done with her inspection.- "I'm glad to see a fellow champion of justice"
-Her fingers still held onto the other girl's subconciously as she glanced around the room more critically, counting the doors and windows, pausing on the strange door higher up on the wall.- "Kidnapping probably isn't a bad guess, goodness knows the Negaverse likes to play dirty. And it makes sense for both of us to be here. Last thing I remember is grocery shopping."
"But that probably means we should try to get out of here before anyone comes back" -Focus on the task.. on the doors. Not the dead things. Not the shadows.. Glancing back at the other girl she strengthed her smile with a nod.- "Let's get out of here."

Compliments were the fastest way to Vanessa's heart. Super Van approved very much of being called a champion of justice and she positively beamed at the other girl through her sunglasses. In Polaris she instantly saw a kindred spirit. Super heroes ought to stick together. It was probably a cardinal rule or something. Vanessa wasn't sure. She was a newcomer to this world of monsters and the Negaverse and being kidnapped, but being recognized as a comrade-in-arms meant everything to her. Super Van was not just a girl in spandex. It was good that other people were beginning to realize it too.
Man, this was getting better and better by the minute.
Super Van had only just met Polaris, but she was sure they could conquer whatever it was that had trapped them here together. Never mind that it seemed to have had no problems doing that.
The other girl's fingers were warm in her own. Vanessa cocked an eyebrow at her, a little surprised that she had not let go. She gave the fingers a gentle squeeze, as if to say; 'It will be okay.' And then released her hand.
"You're right," she nodded in agreement, determined to succeed in the task that lay before them, "We could split it up. I'll take the doors on this side of the wall, and you can take the doors on that one?"
Super Van had her back to the elevated door, and would probably not have noticed it anyways. Doors were usually on the ground. There was no reason to look up.

-The reassuring squeeze was enough to remind her of her grip, and she finally let go as the other girl did, pulling the hand back sheepishly. Even in the dark and bizarre room, the other girl's very aire of optimism and power was enough to lighten Polaris' own, so as the suggestion sounded she nodded, turning to inspect her wall.
There was so much clutter on the floor it was better not to even look there yet, instead tippy toeing through the mess, watching it only enough not to smash into bits of busted furniture. She paused at a mirror, cracked and shattered, eyed one of the hanging dresses wearily. Thoughts of ***** freaks who locked away little girls and did horrible things to them crept at the back of her mind, and she shuddered momentarily.
Pushing along she spotted it again.. elevated up on the wall. A door that didn't touch the floor... how strange? Why in the world would it be there? She peered at it thoughtfully, fingers tapping her cheek mildly. Unless... unless this was one of those underground houses!? If it was surely those other doors on the other side wouldn't lead to anything other than other rooms..-
"I think we need to use this door!" -She called across the room as she pointed up at the wall, checking the nearby clutter for any sign of stairs or ladders.- "I think we might be in one of those underground houses they make. Easily fortified, hard to find." -She prattled on, defending and explaining her idea as the she waited for Super Van's attention and presence.- "If that's the case it's probably one of the few ways out"

Super Van had been on her way across the room, stomping unconcernedly and inconsiderately on the debris that was littered across the floor, when Polaris called out to her. She paused a couple of feet from the door that was directly opposite the window, and turned to consider the things that Polaris said. Vanessa had been in basements before, and figured that this was sort of what Polaris meant.
She could see no reason to disbelieve her newfound friend, and returned to Polaris's side without hesitation. It probably would have made more sense to at least try and open the other doors first, to make sure that Polaris's theory was, in fact, correct, but Super Van didn't think like that.
"It's pretty high up," she observed, obviously intelligently. "Here, come here. I'll give you a boost, and you can try and reach it?"
Vanessa, who'd had much practice with this sort of thing in her childhood, locked her fingers together and held them out to Polaris's knees. It was a makeshift platform. Her intentions were pretty clear.
"You'll probably have to hold onto my shoulders- and uh, hopefully I can push you up high enough."
Hopefully she wouldn't drop her. Super Van wasn't really worried- but, still. John Jr was the only other person she had ever attempted this maneuver with and, while Vanessa had become a practiced veteran, he was a lot smaller than Polaris.

-The ivory haired girl looked mighty uncertain as the offer sounded, staring at the other girl's hands for a moment, but in the end she obliged. Who knew how long they had before whoever had put them there returned? It had yet to dawn on her yet that she 'should' be able to jump that high. It was amazing the things you forgot when stressful situations arrived.
Thank goodness she was a dancer and fairly fit... it made the hop up to the offered hand a little easier... balance, for she was wavering A LOT, a little better, and it also made her a light. Well.. as light as a 5 foot 8, 16 year old girl could be.
Her knee shook as she tried to reach upward, praying silently that Super Van's power was super strength. Please don't fall, please don't fall.
Her fingers reached for the doorknob, for anything that could help her pull herself up. But not high enough... The more she reached the more her leg seemed to shiver and shake. Good thing her partner wasn't a boy, heaven forbid she add the idea that someone might be staring up her skirt too. She surely would have fallen then.-

Polaris was not terribly heavy, but Super Van was also not super strong. She squeaked under the other girl's weight, and immediately started lifting with her legs instead of her shoulders. She shifted her feet further apart instinctively, and braced her lower back against the wall. This made holding Polaris steady quite a bit easier, but Vanessa was finding it increasingly difficult to ignore the strain of her muscles. Scrawny arms and thighs flexed visibly, but were clearly lacking in any significant amounts of strength.
Super Van was feeling the burn.
Knees wobbled. Arms quaked. The fabric of Polaris's boots pressed against the side of her face- she felt it shake as Polaris's leg quivered. Vanessa could not see much passed the other girl's a**. She hoped that they were making some progress.
"Can you reach?" Her voice was taut with the effort of her control. Super Van was concentrating very hard on not dropping Polaris. She sighed and pushed her up a little higher- as far as those skinny arms could possibly lift without breaking. Fortunately for them both, Vanessa was also reasonably tall. At her tallest, she stood at just under 5'9".
Together she and Polaris could cover a lot of space.
But, even though she would never admit it, Super Van could not keep this up much longer.

Sailor Polaris' hand was a good two feet from the doorknob, only barely touching the place where the door melted into the wall. Even if Vanessa could push her a little higher it wouldn't matter: they'd still be nowhere near enough to reach it.
Worse still, there was a mighty THUMP! from behind them. A piano precariously balanced on top of a table precariously balanced on top of a chest of drawers precariously balanced on top of a cheese sandwich had all toppled to the ground -- piano, then table, then drawers, revealing a squashed cheese sandwich.

-She was lifted higher and she could feel her balance failing even more as the other girl's arms began to quiver too. Her fingers slid over the bottom edge of the door, but that was it. A valiant effort, but it wasn't going to w...
Polaris attempted to pivot as the loud sound filled the small room, managing to wrench her foot out of the other girl's hand in the process. And down she went, a** first, the thud of her own fall seemed to echo after the one that had caught her attention in the first place. She didn't seem to act like or think it had been Super Van's fault, but at the same time she didn't bother to ask if the other girl was okay.
Groaning, she shifted, lifting her sore bottom off the mismatched pair of pink bunny covered and vomit apple colored baby shoes.- "What just happened?" -She supposed it was a silly question, it was just coincidence that it'd fallen right? Logic was a good thing.-
"I'd thought it was a door opening." -She grinned sheepishly, standing up the rest of the way. Her voice lifted, thinking outloud.- "Maybe I can stack that table on the piano under the door? It might take a little while though."
"It might be a good idea to split our efforts?"

The combined crashes of the piano, the table and the chest of drawers startled Super Van and her head snapped in the direction of the racket at the same time that Polaris swayed. She felt the other girl begin to fall. Panic shot up her throat like a snake. Heartbeat quickened.
"Crap crap crap crap CRAAAAP," these words slipped off her tongue almost all at once. Vanessa moved beneath Sailor Polaris for the briefest of moments, attempting to steady her with her hands, but it was to no avail. The Senshi of Magnetism fell to the ground with a smack that sounded absolutely painful. Vanessa winced for her friend.
Her own arms and legs were secretly relieved.
"Are you hurt?" The question was directed at Polaris, concern event in the tone of her voice. But she was not looking at her. Golden eyes swept over the debris that had fallen, and zeroed in on the squashed cheese sandwich on the floor.
Food. Super Van's stomach growled.
"I think you're right," she nodded absently and started towards the sandwich, comforted that her her companion was a-okay by the way she'd stood up and returned straight to business. Polaris's proactive attitude complimented Super Van's. "You can keep trying that door if you want, and I'll handle the ones down here."
Right after she checked out that sandwich.
"We'll cover more ground this way."
It was true. But there wasn't any harm in taking a short break to eat, either. Vanessa had always been able to concentrate better if she was well fed. There was a delighted grin on Super Van's face as she stooped to pick up the cheese sandwich, ignoring the things that had fallen around it, and sniffed it cautiously. Her appetite was calling and Vanessa wasn't necessarily picky, but there was no telling how long this little meal had been lurking there. She had never been a fan of mouldy bread, and she imagined that the carcasses of the birds might have fouled it.
Was it safe to eat?

"I've gotten pretty used to getting battered and bruised, no worries" -She nodded simply, attempting to brush away the other girl's concern as she continued on her way, shoving each piece of furniture off the other. Grasping the edge of the piano she gave it a tentative test tug for weight. Heavy.. but not TOO heavy.
Super Van's close inspection of 'something' caught Polaris eye momentarily, causing an almost comical expression when she saw exactly what it was, sticking the tip of her tongue out of her mouth in disgust. Ewwww! She really wasn't thinking about eating that was she? Forget the fact that it was on the floor.. underneath stuff. But it was on the floor with scattered dead animal bits and rotting produce. Her own stomach grumbled softly but she scolded it silently. There was NO way. She'd have to be two seconds away from dying.
Looking back to her task she crouched and pressed her shoulder into the piano, using her weight to verrrrry slowly propel it across the floor. It got stuck on shoes once, and made horrible little crunches as it dragged along bones connected by muscle, she even thought she heard a half-squeak as it finally pressed against the wall.
Sighing, she leaned against the piano tiredly, catching her breath for a long moment as she gazed at the door again and the roof that seemed to go on forever above it. Strange... but an optical illusion maybe? Stretching as she made her way back she glanced back and forth between the dresser and the table. Which would give her more height? More stability? Which was lighter? Grasping the table she dragged it over too, leveraging it to push it up on top of the piano.
Polaris pulled herself up onto the piano, readjusted the table, and then climbed up onto that too. It was taller, but was it tall enough? Stepping on her tippy toes she reached once more for the door knob.-

After a moment's critical inspection, Super Van decided that the sandwich smelled safe enough. She figured that the longer she waited the older it would get and really- nobody had ever died from eating a cheese sandwich. Probably. Even if it was squashed. Vanessa wasn't exactly sure about this, but she did know that it was possible to die of starvation. And that wasn't any way for a super hero to go.
Anyways, it just wasn't right to let a good sandwich go to waste.
With this in mind, Vanessa inhaled, behaving almost as though it were her duty to devour that which had been delivered to them, and tore off a corner with her teeth. She had always been a big fan of cheese, and revelled in the taste for a moment before taking a larger, braver bite.
When she did not immediately collapse with crippling stomach cramps, joy replaced apprehension. Super Van was delighted to have conquered at least one obstacle so far. She sauntered towards the door that was across from the windows once more. It did not open, and this displeased her.
Behind the next there was a brick wall. Vanessa scowled mid-chew and closed it.
The third was jammed, and the fourth did not seem to be a door at all.
"Oh, for ******** sake. What kind of a*****e paints a door on a wall?" If it had been someone else trying to open it, Vanessa would have thought it was hilarious. As it was, Super Van swore loudly and headed towards the last one. Golden eyes shone on the handle, and she burst out laughing. "Hey!" She called to Polaris, mouth full of cheese and bread, "this handle is made of jam! How cool is that?"
She tried to open the door.
