The Lovers Hidden Secrets
Long ago there was a young mermaid who loved to explore the ports around the small towns. She would travel there every day at twilight, so she would not be discovered by the other humans. She didn't know much about the world above the sea, only that the year was 1873 and that pirates have been more noticeable in the seas now that winter had turned to spring. The young mermaids name was Satine, and her father had told her she had the voice of all the angels combined up in heaven. Satine loved to sing, and was saddened when she discovered that all the towns people had left the town in hopes of escaping the pirates wrath. Her father had told her that she should not like being near the humans, and that she was wasting her voice on such petty people such as them. Satine never really liked her father’s view of things, but without argument she followed all his rules and guide lines.
One day while Satine had been swimming towards the port which lead to the deserted city, she noticed a ship was docked and people were walking around upon its decks. As she neared the ship she could see the sails, black as night which matched the flag that swayed in the salty sea air. Satine stayed back because she had also noticed the skull and cross bone symbol that also swayed in the breeze, for this meant that they were pirates and would be dangerous. She saw the captain standing on the deck, talking to a man whom she guessed was the first mate of the ship. Curiosity got the better of Satine, and she ventured closer to the ship in hopes of getting a better look at the captain and his first mate. As she reached the waters which were closer to the boat she heard the conversation between the captain and his first mate, whose name she overheard was Brendon.
"Brendon lad we must watch over the sea before we venture back out, or else we face more problems with our sailing" she heard the captain say gruffly as he smoked his pipe.
"Captain I told you I was sorry about that, after all I did not see the flock of birds" she heard him say quietly as he stared down into the darkness of the water. "How was I to know they would tear the sails like that just so they could pass without breaking their formation" he said to his captain still staring into the murky depths.
"Lad I don't care, what's done is done and that's all I have to say on this matter at this point" the captain said angrily as he walked away from the lad leaving him to stare into the waters alone. As Brendon stared down into the waters he sighed, feeling empty and alone as he stood on the deck. Satine felt sorry for the male, and swam closer towards where he was standing. She wasn't being careful, and had made a louder splash with her tail than she had intended to. Brendon caught a glimpse of honey colored hair, and moved closer to the side trying to catch a glimpse of what it was he had spotted. As soon as he came closer to the edge he saw her pale skin glistening with the sea water, and the waterfall of honey colored hair that rested on her shoulders. He felt his heart thud in his chest, and hoped it wasn't a maiden dead from the icy waters.
"You there, are you alive" he asked as he continued to look down into the waters hoping that there would be some sort of answer. "Lass do you need assistance, I mean if you are still alive" he said with a shudder as he began to lower a rope into the waters for her to reach for if she were alive.
"No sir please, I am fine here in the cold waters" Satine said quietly as she looked up at him, her pale emerald eyes glistening in the sunlight as she looked up at him. "The water is my home, and I do not wish to leave it even for a moment." Brendon stared at the girl in disbelief as she spoke of staying in the cold waters of the sea, and shook his head as he looked into her eyes.
"Lass you'll catch a cold if you stay in those cold waters" he said, his voice filled with worry for the maiden he had discovered in the sea. "Please allow me to bring you up onto the deck so you my dry off and perhaps warm your chilled body" he said as he now lowered himself down the side of the boat, using the rope to guide himself. As soon as he reached the point of where the waters almost reached his feet, he froze at the sight of her beauty and grace. "My dear lass" he said softly under his breath as he continued to look at her as if everything were a dream, "you are quite the beauty, now come out from these waters before you freeze to death" he said sternly as he continued to enjoy her beauty.
"Sir I cannot leave the waters or I shall shrivel up and choke" she said quietly, feeling her cheeks paint themselves with a crimson shade. She felt her tail swirling beneath her in the waters, and sighed as she looked up at the man. "My home is in the water for a reason" she said as she slowly dove under the water causing her tail to splash into the air. When she surfaced once more her entire body glistened in the sunlight, and the water slowly dripped from her hair and down onto her still crimson face.
Brendon could only stare at the girl as he saw her tail splash up from the waters, and he felt his heart continue to thud in his chest as he looked at her. "Why lass" he said shakily as he slowly ran his finger across her frozen lips, "you are a mermaid" he said still trying to make himself believe. "But I thought those were only things of myths and folktales" he said as he rested his hand on her cheek, noting the crimson shade they had turned as she looked at him. "Lass I believe you are quite beautiful" he said as he looked into her pale emerald eyes, and gave a small smile to show he meant no harm to her.
"You flatter me Brendon" she said, blushing softly when she realized she had finally used his name instead of sir. "And yes, it is true that most people believe we are mythical creatures who are only in stories" she said softly with a sigh as she looked into his chocolate eyes. "But believe me, we are quite real and we only wish for peace within races" Satine said softly as her eyes shone with wonder towards this strange man. After a few moments she gave a small smile as she placed her hand over his, "my name is Satine."
Brendon stared at her silently for a moment, and then gave her another soft smile as he rubbed his thumb slowly across her cheek. "Satine is such a beautiful name for such a lovely mermaid like yourself" he said with a smile as he softly kissed her crimson cheeks. "Tell me Satine, do you believe in love at first sight" he asked curiously as he continued to rub her cheek softly.
Satine only felt her cheeks turn even darker in shade and gave him a quirky smile, "actually yes I do believe in such things, after all I am known for being in fairy-tales." Satine slowly leaned up closer towards him, still smiling as she felt his warm hand against her frigid cheek. "Your hands feel so warm on my cheeks" she said softly, "even if I blush my body feels frigid and cold from the sea."
"Well my dear maiden of the sea, let me speak to your father and I shall end your life of icy depression" he said, noticing her eyes were filled with despair as she spoke. Suddenly his eyes brighten, and a large grin spread across his face as he looked into her eyes. "You are the maiden!" he exclaimed with delight as he continued to smile, "you are the sweet voice in the night air that caused me to fall under your spell!" He wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her into a soft embrace that still kept her in the cold waters of the sea. "Please allow me to speak with your father" he exclaimed as he embraced her kissing her cheeks lovingly, "for I wish to take you as my beloved wife."
Satine could only stare at Brendon is disbelief, and felt her teeth sink into her lower lip softly as she looked into his shining eyes. "Brendon there is a slight problem with your theories" she said softly as her eyes glistened with tears, "my father only allows me to marry one who is rich and powerful." She felt the tear slowly slip down her rosy cheek, the single tear looking as delicate as crystal. "I have fallen in love with a man my father would never allow me to be with" she said quietly to herself as she stared into the waters she called home. Satine could feel her heart crumbling into pieces as she looked at Brendon in the eyes, and sighed, "Brendon you are only a first mate, my father would never allow me to marry such a man."
Brendon felt a sudden wave of defeat as he looked at the beautiful woman in his arms, and then suddenly had an idea surge through his mind. "Tell your father to meet me at this very port when sunset comes my love and I will make sure he will give us his blessing on the day of our wedding" he said, his voice full of hope that caused her to become quite curious. "I would like to speak to him alone, so if you wish for this to work I need you to stay home below the salty waters.
Satine gave him a wary look, but nodded her head in agreement as she softly kissed his lips. "I will tell father to meet you here, though do not look so sure of yourself" she said as she left his arms, "father is one who is not easily moved on his views for his daughter." With those final words she dove beneath the waters and disappeared into this darkness, the water seeming to swallow the beautiful maiden whole. Brendon sighed as he crawled back up onto the deck, and sat down hoping to finalize his plan to convince his loves father. After hours of thinking he borrowed the captain’s best suit, and groomed himself until he thought he would nearly sparkle. Finally sunset came, and Brendon waited on the docks looking across the waters in search of the father of Satine. Suddenly he saw ripples in the water, then began to notice a form emerging from its watery depths as the figure moved closer to the docks. His hair was a white as the snowy mountains in Switzerland, and her eyes seemed blacked like two pieces of coal freshly mined from the grounds. His lips were set in a hard line, and her brow was furrowed as if in deep thought as he finally reached the port where the ship had been held.
"Are you the young man my daughter speaks of" he asked, his voice booming loudly in the soft sea breezes. "My daughter spoke of a young suitor who wished to marry her" he said as he looked at the male standing before up, as if sizing him up before a murderous killing. The sunlight caused an eerily pinkish-orange light to glow around her father, and it made him seem as if a great fire were burning in the far distance behind him. He looked at the ship that was docked on the port, and gave Brendon a look of disgust.
Brendon sighed as he tried to calm himself, and nodded his head looking at the man hoping for some trust. "Yes I am sir, my name is Brendon and I wish to become your daughter’s husband" he said hoping that his voice didn't show his nervousness. "Please sir; though I do not look like much" he said giving him a strong smile showing his happiness, "I assure you I am perfect for your daughter." He ran his fingers through his hair, and fixed the suit he was wearing hoping that her father would see his love for her. "I am a brilliant writer traveling the seas to write my stories" he said with a bright smile as he looked him in the eyes full on now. He shook his head and bowed it apology, "forgive me for not asking what your name was" he said hoping that he did not offend him.
"My name is Edwind, and we will see if you are good enough for my daughter" he said in a gruff voice, not knowing what to think of the male yet. He leaned against the long trunks of wood that held up the pier, and continued to look at the male with a bland expression. "What makes you think you are worthy of my daughter, when you've only met and known each other for one single day." His eyes gleamed, full of question as he looked at Brendon still trying to decided what this man was trying to do.
"I am worthy of your daughters love, or else she would not have given me the key that made her own heart bloom with love towards me." Brandon gave him a heartwarming smile, and looked the man directly in his eyes at this point in hopes that he would understand. "Please sir, I fit your qualifications do I not" he asked curiously looking down at the father that held his future in his palms. "Please understand that I love your daughter with all my being, and would love to take her as my wife" he said holding his hand over his heart, which felt like it was being crushed by her father’s looks.
Edwind smiled suddenly, his pearly teeth gleaming in the sunlight as he moved closer to Brendon full of happiness. "Yes you have won her heart, and I now see that as a rich writer you are suitable for her as well." He looked at the man giving him once last glance, and gave him one last smile before he disappeared into the waters.
After a few hours Satine emerged from the water and threw her arms around Brendon kissing him deeply. "How did you ever convince my father to agree!" she asked him happily as she looked into his eyes full of wonder. "I mean as soon as he came home he said he fully approved of you, and he was only here for about half an hour!" She looked into his eyes happily, and kissed him once more as she stayed buried in his arms. "I've never seen father so happy to announce the fact that his daughter was getting married" she said cheerfully as she looked into his eyes, and suddenly saw uneasiness. Her smiled faded slightly, and her eyes shone slightly dimmer as she looked at him, "what's that matter Brendon you should be happy."
Brendon bit his lip softly and sighed, "I lied to your father and said I was a wealthy writer travelling the world to continue my stories." He closed his eyes, and buried his face against her soft hair as he felt his hands shake. "My love for you burns brightly" he said, his voice shaking slightly as he looked into her eyes. "I couldn't just be denied what I knew would make me happy" he paused then looked at her, "what would make us both happy."
Suddenly Satine withdrew from his arms and looked at him in the eyes, her own moist with tiny tears starting to form. "What do you mean you lied to my father, and you acted like a writer!?!" She felt her heart breaking and shook her head looking at him, the tears now falling down her face as she sighed. "You must tell him the truth; you can't live a lie like this just for my hand in marriage." The tears stung her eyes, and she held onto his hand not knowing what else she should do except cry and hope for the best.
"Please Satine try to understand, I love you so much and I just don't want to have to give you up because of your father." He felt his heart crumbling at her unhappiness, and tried to think of what he could do to convince her that everything would work out. "I can't tell your father I lied, for if I do I will never be able to marry you" he explained as he looked into her eyes stroking her face, noting that it had gone pale. "Please Satine I really want to marry you, I've fallen in love with you!!!" His face was flustered, and he couldn't decide whether to just steal her away from the wretched sea or to let her go and break his own heart.
Satine only felt more tears pour from her eyes as she looked at him angrily, "you don't understand do you!" She couldn't stand being there anymore, she couldn't look him in the eyes she was so hurt. "If you wont tell him the truth I will" she screamed before she dove into the water towards the palace where her father and family lived. As she entered her father's room she was happy that water hid the fact she was crying. "Father I must speak with you about Brendon" she said as she found him sitting in the coral covered armchair in the corner. She didn't know what to do, she was torn between telling the truth or keeping the love of her life. Her father turned around and looked at, only causing her to bite her lip with uneasiness.
"Why my dear child why do you look so sad, you should be happy about your lover" he said as he rose from the chair and swam over to her. He embraced her warmly and smiled as he twirled her around in circles like he did as a child, keeping her close. "When would you like to have the wedding my little guppy" he said happliy as he looked into her eyes, then stopped twirling when he noticed the sadness in her eyes. "Did something happen between you and that boy" he said slightly anger when he realized she had been crying, and held her close trying to comfort her. "What in the world happened after I left and you returned to the surface" he asked, now hiding his anger keeping calm.
Satine felt her lip tremble, and hoped that her father would understand the situation so that she could stay with Brendon. "He...he lied to you father" she said quietly peering into his eyes as she spoke. "He is no famous writer, only the first mate of a pirate ship" she said dropping her gaze to the floor feeling torn. Her body now felt numb as she felt her fathers grip tighten on her arms, and felt his breathing deepen as she noticed his flood of anger. "Please father I know he lied....and I know he doesn't fit your qualifications" she said, starting to stutter with her words as she looked up at him, "but please let me marry him still." She decided she wouldn't leave Brendon, even if he did lie to her father she still loved him with all her heart.
Edwind looked at his daughter, and tossed her into the coral pink colored chair before he stepped towards her. "You dare go against my wishes and love a man who is not good enough for you!" he cried out loudly growling. He felt anger ranging inside him, and looked at her with his eyes glowing with hatred, "you will never see the stupid boy again" he said before he swam out from the room, locking it and then went towards the surface. She felt her eyes instantly fill with tears, and she feared the worse fate would be happening soon enough for Brendon. Sure enough Brendon was still standing on the docks, upset that he had made Satine mad with his trickery towards her father so that they could be together. Suddenly he was filled with hope as he saw the popping of bubbles in the water, and thinking it was Satine moved closer to the waters to speak with her about everything. But Brendon's hopes were quickly dashed when he saw the color of those eyes, even through the darkened water they pierced through him like ice slashing through his heart. Edwind emerged from the water with haste, nearly pulling the boy into the water to attack him as he glared at him angrily. "You lying swine" he bellowed as he raised a hand to reach for his shirt and grab for it, only to miss as he moved backwards. "You dare lie to me just to be granted the hand of my daughter in one of the most sacred things to my kind" he said as he once again reached out for Brendon, this time grabbing his shirt and pulling him eye level to himself as he floated in the waters. "You shall never see my daughter ever again" he said, an evil grin spreading across his lips, " and you shall never see the beauty of the world either." With that he used a mixture to blind Brendon permenantly, and dove back into the water leaving him stumbling all along the shore.
"Father what have you done" Satine said in almost a shriek when her father returned and told her of his deed. She had begged for him to remove the blindness, but he left alone to sob by herself while the love of her life wandered around aimlessly. After days had passed, Satine was once again allowed to swim freely, but was to stay away from the docks. She swam past the docking area, and nearly sobbed once more when she notcied that the ship had departed. She swam without paying attention to her direction, and after a few hours of swimming she had heard something odd. She heard sobbing, male sobbing from the sounds of it, and decided she would figure out what was causing it. "What in the world could that be" she thought to herself as she swam closer, and nearly screamed when she saw her beloved Brendon sitting on the shore sobbing. "Brendon, oh Brendon I can't believe your still here" she screamed with delight as she swam towards him. Noticing her voice he scrambled towards the water, his arms flailing around as he tried to locate where she was.
