User ImageThe high grasses to either side of the kimeti rustled softly in the breeze. That alone was enough to make Wood Spider reconsider this course of action, because if she brushed against them with flank or leg, their sawtooth edges cut right through her fur, as sharp as crocodile teeth; there was a reason she'd heard this called tooth-grass. She had already sustained a cut across her nose, and she was fairly certain that the protective charm that she'd tied around her tail had fallen off about half a mile ago. Now she had to be careful not to attract ghosts... but it'd be worth it if she managed to catch what was in front of her.

In the middle of a web that glistened in midair, woven between two huge cypress knees, was a fat spider which glistened like a jewel, all blue-green and violet. Wood Spider had heard, somewhere (or she'd made it up) that spiders were good luck, and their shells could be used for jewelry that would stop flies from biting. It'd be worth it, if she could just make it through the sucking mud and tooth-grass and actually get to it. She grunted with the effort of lifting a hoof out of the muck and took one more careful step forward. So far, the spider hadn't noticed a thing...

Out of what seemed like nowhere, one of the most majestic creatures that Mother Swamp has created swoops in and with her beak deftly slices the web in half, catches the spider, tosses it forward only to have it arc into her mouth and down her throat, and finally throws her wings out to come to a graceful halt, in exactly the place the web was strung moments before. The entire ordeal took about 3 seconds, but may have seemed an eternity for those whom have never seen such a sight before.

The golden crane flapped her wings just once before neatly folding them at her sides. Now that she had landed after her tasty little snack, she turns her head slowly and stops when her right eye finds a white and brown doe struggling in the mud. What is she doing? The thought floats through the crane's mind, but she merely watches silently and waits for a response from the doe, if there was one to be had.

User ImageNot struggling anymore -- Spider had managed to get all four feet out of the sticky mud and on more stable ground, and had been just about to make a lunge for the spider when the crane swoops in and eats it! Spider recoils in shock, back hooves sinking into the mud again, but manages to ignore it -- the spider, the one she'd found that would have been perfect, has just been eaten by a crane. Ignoring the fact that cranes are a rarity in the Swamp and a sign unto themselves (they bring good luck! they bring blessings and advice!), she snorts in disgust and says, quite distinctly, as if the crane can talk, "I was going to use that. Now I'm going to be itchy all the way home."

The crane stirred her feathers by shifting her wings upwards in a slight shrug as she watched the females expressions change, and then finally her reaction to speak to her, as if cranes could talk!

She merely tilted her head to one side, pondering why the spider would have eased her itching. She stalked closer to the doe, one step, two, three, and she stopped once more. Now, much nearer the doe, the golden bird cocked it's head to the other side and stretched her neck out to look the female over more closely.

And out of nowhere, much like the crane's first appearance, came a deep voice from amid the trees and the mud and the air all around. "Was it a special spider? I know not of it's ability to ease itching... Though if I may divulge, it was a rather... tasty snack..."

User Image Wood Spider stared the crane down, not blinking; that spider had been a pretty one, and it would have made perfect jewelry! And she'd eaten it? Of all things to do -- her look went from irritated to indignant, but quieted, fascinated, when the Swamp itself seemed to speak to her. Why would the Swamp speak to her about charms and itching...?

Her face was puzzled, but she stood up straight and prim and managed to sound polite and questioning as she asked, "All spiders ease itching. You should know, you made them! The spiders and the mud and the flies!"

The crane was obviously listening to the doe, tilting it's head this way, and then that way, it's only other movement: blinking. Webweave was not sure what this doe was talking about, but perhaps she knew of some sort of remedy for bites that was made from spiders, and who was she to judge?

Playing along, so as not to discourage this doe from her beliefs, that deep voice emerges again just as before and says, "It must have slipped my mind. They really do make a delicious snack, though." It stops for a moment for a warm, tickling chuckle as the crane tilts it's head back and points it's beak at the sky, shaking it's wings out once more. When it settles, so does the laughter. Strange... was there a shimmer running through the trees off to the side? Perhaps not. Perhaps it had just been a trick of the light.

User ImageCome to think of it, the doe was a little rounder around the belly than she had been, a little softer; even had she been successful in pouncing that spider, she might not have made it. Clumsy to begin with, Wood Spider was now carrying a few extra pounds from her young. She hadn't paid it much thought, but it was visible in her belly, especially as she moved. In a few days, however, it would become much more noticeable.

She glanced off to the copse of trees to the side, the shimmer having caught her eye; the sun was beginning to set, however, and this was the time will-o-the-wisps came out to play; such things as shimmers and spangled light weren't that uncommon... but talking cranes were. No doubt there were legends about them that she just, well, hadn't paid attention to; she didn't know any remedies or charms using crane feathers, either, but now was not the time to ask the crane whether it knew.

She turned her attention back to the crane, so as not to be rude. "You know, I have never spoken to a crane before. My name's Wood Spider." Feeling rather out of her league, a little discombobulated as things got stranger by degrees, Spider decided to play along and run with it. She shifted her weight in the mud; she'd been feeling a little odd lately. "It's nice to meet you. This really is quite a lovely part of the swamp. Especially at sunset."

The crane bowed it's head gracefully, and as it did so, the voice began once more, "The pleasure is mine, Wood Spider. Though, not all cranes speak, I am merely one of those lucky enough to have been reunited with my other half. My name, young mother-to-be, is Webweave and this feathery body of mine was gifted back to me by the Motherfather."

As she spoke, the shimmer came closer, taking it's time to weave through the trees and step over the larger puddle of mud. As it approached, it became a little clearer. It was the mare, ghost-like and colored like the crane, but what was most startling - or perhaps inviting - was her eyes, which cast a strong white gaze upon the doe now. The mare stopped a few paces away from the doe, and once there, the crane opened it's wings and beckoned the doe closer.

"Come, Wood Spider, come closer." If it was indeed getting to be close to sunset, Webweave needed to be on her way soon, but she didn't want to leave, without giving the doe something to make up for eating her itch-relieving spider.

User ImageWood Spider was too polite to gape; instead, she stood for a moment, shifting her weight again. Suddenly it made sense, in a way that was just a little embarassing (her ears drooped) -- no wonder she'd felt a little off lately, bigger than normal, slightly clumsier; of course she was pregnant. Things happened when you spent time with a handsome young buck. Suddenly warmth flooded through her, spreading from her belly out.

She was carrying young! That opened up a whole new realm of possibilities, a whole new list of things she would have to search for in the Swamp -- but now she took a step forward, then two, until she could feel the soft brush of the crane's wingtips against her chest.

The crane watched the doe's expressions silently, though it seemed that she had not known of her state before it had been mentioned. Mentally, Webweave just shrugged this off. It was better that she knew now, than worrying about having upset her. This way, at least, she could begin preparing for the ordeal ahead of her.

She waited patiently for the doe to approach, and with each step that she took, so did the mare. The ghostly figure slowly came up behind, laterally to the duo, but it stopped just short of touching the doe. "I cannot replace your crawling arachnid, I can ask the Motherfather for a different sort of favor." As she spoke, the voice went slowly quieter, until it faded off at the end, at which time, the ghostly mare stepped forward, and her corporeal form embraced the very real doe, sending warm flutters all over her body, hugging her in a way that only a warm cloud of mist can do. But the mare did not stop, she kept walking until her nose made contact with the crane's beak, at which point, both figures went ghostly for a few moments, until the mare was completely ahead of the doe. At that point, the crane now a shimmer of light, lifted into the air and disappeared like a puff of smoke, and the mare kept walking.

It was time to go, and all that had to be said had been said, so all that was left, was a silent goodbye, which she offered with a swift glance over her shoulder as she walked away, and a slow blink of her white knowing eyes.

User ImageSpider stands as still as she can, struck with the news; not only is she with young, but this kimeti is one of the ones she's heard about, those chosen and blessed by the Motherfather, who have a piece of the Swamp within them. She stands with her hooves together, regarding Webweave intently -- and then nods, once, her understanding. Her look goes from somewhat distracted and spacey to intent, respectful, and slightly awestruck.

The flutters make her shiver, made her eyes slip shut -- she can feel them dancing all over her body, as fine as spider's legs, as gentle as the brush of willow leaves against her coat. When the other kimeti leaves, after merging back into her actual shape, Wood Spider nods at her, still feeling those flutters dance over her.
