I was having a discussion with my mom earlier about the classes I'll be taking this summer for college, and she said, "I'll pay for one class." I said, "okay, I'll take a math class and an art class." My mom said, "I'm not going to waste my money so you can draw pictures, that class is for mom's that have nothing better to do because their children moved out. It's a hobby, not a career. I don't want you doing any of that, and you're NOT going to art school. All you do is sit up in your room and draw little cartoons." Me, "mom I don't draw cartoons, you don't even look at my art at all." mom, "okay, so you're good at it, you won't make any money off of it." Me, "the reason why I want to go to art school is to figure out exactly what career I want to pursue that involves art." Mom, "No you just want me to pay for you to get a lesbian girlfriend and draw pictures with her at school for two years." Me, "What makes you think that all art students are gay?" Mom, "YOU'RE gay." Me, "So?" Mom, "Someone has to tell you the truth Hollie, You're not going to get anywhere if you draw stupid pictures, you'll be a loser, and I know you're better than that." Me, "so what if I'm not a doctor, a lawyer, or a ******** teacher. I would be so miserable. Right now is when I choose if I'm going to be miserable for the rest of my life or not. Look at your husband, he comes home screaming at everyone because he's stressed about work, and you get ma at me when I get mad at him because you say he's stressed from work and he can't help it. Yeah he owns a business and yeah he's making a good amount of money, but he's ******** miserable. He puts up with more s**t on a daily basis than I do at work in more than a week. Mom, "How DARE you talk like that about my husband, you're a spoiled rotten brat. He doesn't yell at you, you've had it easy blah blah It goes on and on...
So yeah, I'm very frustrated atm...

neutral I dislike your mom even though I don't know her. The only thing that my mom would tell me was, what are you going to do in art and how much money are you going to make? But later on she stopped telling me all that crazy talk, she recognized that I had a great talent and I was happy by just drawing anything. She tells me I should go into a medical field first get a fast little career and while I get a job I'll pay for art school and she'll help, and my dad agrees on that too. I'ts so sad that your mom is very ignorant, that only gay/lesbian people are into art just because you're a lesbian. My mom told me she would be happy with what I chose as long as I am happy, she told me she wouldn't want to be blammed later on for things that she said and shattered my dreams, in contrary parents should be there for their children even if their dreams sound silly or crazy, they are there for support no matter what.
Hollie if you want to go to an Art school go for it, I'm tranferring out of HCC when I'm done with my basics and done some medical training. I've been planning this, because AI costs a lot of mulah, You should take your basics at a community college they are much cheaper, $600 for four classes, then take art classes at an art institute or college. My friend went to the Ai and for four classes it costed her 10k for two semesters, and that was for basic classes and some art classes. also apply for FAFSA that is free money right there if you qualify also theirs grants out there you just have to look for them.

I hate parents like that, I know sometimes they have to be all realistic but that went over board, I'm going in for graphic design, when I was in HS, I was in a graphic arts class, pretty much its a printing class, people out there use alot of printing shops, to print T-shirts, cards pretty much everything, so when I'm finished with graphic design I'm going into a printing shop, plus its so awesome, i learned how to develope photos the old fashion way ;]

your mom seems to hate art so much :/ at least your parents pay for you choice summer class. when my mom is on a bad mood, she'll tell me to get a job and pay for my own tuition! i was like, "Mom! I'm 14! how the hell will I get a job!"

Dear lord, I love parents like that.
Has she even tried researching the sort of careers artists can have? I don't know, it seems like common sense that someone doing something that they like will have a much more lucrative and productive career than somebody who's just following the mainstream.
I know people who literally live off their art, and they're not bad off at all. Your mom's reasoning is...flawed.

Reminds me of my mother Dx It really doesn't matter what field you go into, there will be people who make a lot of money at it and there will be people with the exact same credentials who will make a lot less. You should be happy in what you do. People who pick careers solely for money usually become miserable and switch jobs after a while. I know people who have gotten degrees and are now going back to school because of that. I also know a lady who has a medical degree, but hated her job so now she's waitressing because she enjoys it, and she gets by just fine off of that.

i basically agree with all of the above..
but yeah, i've seen some of your art and you obviously have talent. it sucks that your mother isn't paying attention to that. especially since you seem to love it so much. don't let it get to you though, some people just refuse to believe that you can do something you love, be happy, and make a living out of it.

Yeah, I told her today that's she's trying to live my life, and if she keeps it up I'm leaving. Then she said that I make her depressed and that she's on the verge of leaving because of me or some bullshit. She's so childish. ~Liona Lionheart- That's what I'm going for. I'm not just going to art school, I'm also going to a university, my mom just seems to think that art school will make me retarded or something. :/ ~The Atroxious- I know, sometimes I kind of want to punch her in the neck. ~ZukiAngel- Wait, you have to pay for classes in highschool? o.o ~TAG_Miss_Dork- Nice. :]

I hate when people make a big deal about homosexuality. It's like, it happens. My friend is gay and I freakin love him, he's so fun to chill with. I have a high respect for homosexual people because they get allot of s**t sometimes and go on, it's how you (Hollie) and others live. It doesn't make a deference in you or anyone elses life if they're gay. And also, art school sounds amazing and all, but I might side with your mom in saying that your paying to draw in a class. Art is something that you can find by yourself, maybe peer critiquing or something but art SCHOOL, meh...Fun but very expensive.
