Yes 2012 will be a real year, not a fake one. *tic* This idea is based on the mayan calendar which ends in 2012. That is not to say they though it was the end of the world... it's just they only figured out their calendar to 2012 (kind of like our calendar ends every year in December)
If you are a Christian, you should not be worrying about a pagan peoples believes from the precolumbian age.
For Christian signs of the Apocalypse, you can read Matthew 24 - 25:13 and Revelation for a start.

Finally, a question I feel qualified to answer! Okay, yeah ... like Elysa said, the "predictions" are based on a Mayan calendar that basically had an expiration date. Here's another few facts to go along with that.

1. We're talking about converting between two calendars, their time to our time. I can guarantee mistakes have crept in.

2. There's actually around six different old Mayan calendars. Only one predicts "the end of the world".

3. Modern-day Mayans aren't worried about 2012.

4. This calendar supposedly predicts the end of the world in 2012. They even give a day: 20 December. Well, Nostradamus predicted the end of the world in July 1997. The Jehovah's Witnesses were predicting it back in 1914 (and 1918, and 1925, and 1975). It didn't happen back then, and I don't expect it'll happen in 2012.

5. The New Agers predict that 2012 will start a great "spiritual awakening" ... which is the same thing their forebears, the hippies, were predicting back in the sixties and seventies with the "age of Aquarius". So, the so-called "prophets" can't even agree on what's going to happen ... they just recycle old garbage.

6. 95% of what's popularly "known" about 2012 comes from two sources: Hollywood, and a guy named Eric von Daniken. Both are notorious for making things up. Oh, and the History Channel ... which calls on Daniken as a resource whenever they want to cash in on pop culture. (The History Channel is not a reliable resource for anything. I'd sooner trust the National Enquirer.)

7. (And this is the most important) Nobody, nobody, knows when the end will come. Man doesn't know, the angels don't know, even Jesus didn't know. Only the Father has that information, and He's keeping it to Himself. (Check Matthew 24:35-37 and Mark 13:31-33.)

There will always be "doomsday prophets", always be people screaming "look out, here comes the end!" That's a given. But we Christians are not to be worried, because we know God's got everything under control. What's the kid-song ... "He's got the whole world in His hands"?

O'course, me being me, I like the more adult version. xp

Hearts are failing left and right.
Children fear this planet's plight.
Fatalistic fears abound,
And take their toll without a sound.

But through the vague uncertainty
Comes a bold assurity:
This world is under sovereignty,
Divinely-ordered destiny.

He holds this world together,
With the Word of His power,
Safe within His hands,
'Till its own appointed hour.

And He's still got the whole world in His hands tonight.
And only He knows where the sparrow lands tonight.
And nothing in this world can stop His plans tonight.
'Cause He's still got the whole world in His hands ... tonight.

Sandra Noble, executive director of the Mesoamerican research organization FAMSI, notes that "for the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle". She considers the portrayal of December 2012 as a doomsday or cosmic-shift event to be "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in." As quoted in USA Today (MacDonald 2007

So the idea of the Mayan long calendar was that it should start the count all over again.

if you look under long count, the Mayan's actually had terms for longer periods of time, up to 63 million years.

nice!

point number 6, awwwww..i like watching history channel...just for entertainment and/or to learn something random..XD but i don't really believe everything they say... whee

point number 7, yes it's soooo true!..

and besides, the prophecies in the book of revelations will never happen if the world suddenly ends in 2012 thus making God a liar...

I'm not calling the History Channel bad ... except for their little series on exploring origins of certain Greek myths, where they said the Cyclops was based on the skull of an elephant, because I felt IQ points melting away just from watching that ... I'm just saying it's as accurate as comparing a loony bin to a can of mixed nuts.
