Somewhere between Rohan, her parents visiting, and her typical Senshi duties, Khalla had slacked off on her kickboxing training. Sure, she'd told Ari that her parents were coming into town (and most people understood what a big deal that was for her) but she had never meant for her absence to become quite so.. pronounced. It had been weeks since she'd last shown up for practice and she could already hear her bold friend's words in her ear.
"Just suck up it up, Khalla," she mumbled to herself, hands in a fist as she tried to psych herself up. She was standing in front of the gym, hair pulled back and gym bag slung over her shoulder. She was sure Ari was going to be there, she always was around this time of day. Well, at least she had been while she was training before. She just had to hope the girl's schedule hadn't changed when Khalla got to busy too show up.
With a deep breath she pushed the door open, not even grimacing as the smell of sweat and plastic greeted her in one big gust. Thankfully she got fewer stares than she used to - she had become a somewhat familiar face to the majority of the people there, even if some of them still found her more amusing than anything else. Regardless, she brought her chin up defiantly and strode across the gym to the area where Ariana usually trained.
She just hoped she was there so that she wasn't left looking like a fool all alone in this rather odd gym.

Without ever realising why, Ari liked to position herself so she could see the gym entrance, as well as anyone approaching the area she and Khalla considered 'theirs'. It was an unconscious thing, but useful.
When the familiar blonde entered, Ari felt her shoulders tense up. She immediately forced them back down, finishing out a sequences of punches and low kicks on the bag while Khalla made her way across the floor. Lowering her leg from the last kick, she turned to face Khalla, brushing loose, sticky hair off her face with a bare forearm.
"I was beginning to wonder if your family had kidnapped you," Ari said, resting gloved hands on her hips. If she was a little brusque, her next words explained part of the reason why. "Or that maybe you got caught in one of those 'terrorist attacks' that are all over the news lately. I'm glad to see you aren't dead." Violet eyes narrowed - now that the worry was removed, irritation was free to surface. "Though I don't suppose you've been at least practicing on your own while too busy to show up, or let me know you were alive but too busy to join me?"

As the familiar redhead came into sight, a wave of nerves swept over Khalla and threatened to eat her from the inside out. Somewhere deep down there was a tiny flow of relief commingled as she realized that at least she was here and she wouldn't look like a fool standing here alone in the gym - but it was a tiny little wave compared to the tsunami threatening to bowl her over.
"No, they didn't kidnap me and I wasn't attacked by a terrorist," another chip of nervousness wore away at that comment and was replaced by a little bit of amusement deep down instead. It didn't show on her face, mostly because it wasn't a good thing to encourage, but whenever someone referred to 'the terrorists' she couldn't help but be a little amused by it. So few of them actually knew anything about it, which was sad. She took most of it in stride, though, because what else could she really do?
Ari's tone was another thing she couldn't really laugh at, and before she knew it she was setting her bag down and slipping off the sandals she had worn in. That tone was no-nonsense and Khalla knew it well. "Look, I'm really sorry okay?" she sighed as she set her shoes and bag to the side and turned back to face Ari, a frown set deeply on her face. "I know that I should have called at least, but I've had a lot on my mind and I haven't had time for anything except school really. Not until this last week anyway." It was such a lame excuse (she almost winced as the words came out of her mouth) but how was she supposed to tell Ari that part of it was that she was one of those 'terrorists' and the other was that Rohan had thrown her for a complete one-eighty?
"I did practice though," she offered at the end, chewing a little at her lip. It really wasn't so much practice as it was application, but she figured it counted for this purpose.

Giving a sigh, Ari let her arms drop. The wry half-smile she gave Khalla removed the last trace of her sternness. "Well, that's good, at least. And I'm glad you're back." The length of Khalla's absence had also prompted concern that the blonde had decided she'd learned enough, and was done with the training.
Ari's smile turned full and bright. "Alright, pad up, let's see how you go against me." She moved away from the punching bag and into the space used for matches or kata. She wouldn't go all out against Khalla, but this was the best way to see how Khalla was progressing, and what, if anything, needed work.

She was thankful that her trainer wasn't a vengeful person and that their session wasn't any more stressful than normal. She needed practice but at the same time, she really wouldn't have appreciated being worked to the bone. The work-out passed quickly and before Khalla knew it, the two of them were already hitting the locker rooms.
"I wasn't too shabby, was I?" Khalla called out to Ari as she sat on a bench of the changing room, using her towel to wipe off the last bits of water from her arms and legs. She set it aside and stood up, pulling off the shower cap she had put over her dreads, and let them tumble down back into place. She grabbed the simple summer dress she had packed into her gym bag (assuming it would be easier to put on after the work out) and pulled it on quickly, along with the sandals she had originally worn in.
She sat back down and started to pack up her things into her bag as she waited for Ari to come out of the showers. "I was practicing, so I hope it showed. I'd hate to know I was doing all of that and not getting any better." It sounded like idle babbling - probably because Khalla was uncomfortable being alone in the middle of the gym's locker room and she was filling the silence with the sound of her own voice.

It was a reluctant Ari that turned off the hot water and emerged from the shower. She promised herself a hot soak when she got home, since she didn't like to take too long in the gym lockers even when someone wasn't waiting on her. She was briskly rubbing herself down when Khalla called out - already done with showering and dressing from the direction of her voice.
"I was mostly pleasantly surprised," Ari called back, voice serious though her eyes (unseen by Khalla) sparkled mischievously. She bit back a chuckle - she might not be vengeful, but that didn't mean she was above teasing Khalla. "Or I would have been, if I didn't expect you to keep improving like you do."
She dressed quickly, pulling on denim capris and a lacy shirt. Finally rejoining Khalla, Ari gave a bright smile. "So, I figure I owe you a drink, at the least, for keeping up with your practice. It really showed. Unless you've got somewhere you need to be?"

Khalla was just finishing stuffing her things into her gym bag and zipping it up as Ari came out of the shower and began to dress. She finished what she was doing and pulled the bag over her shoulder, then turned to Ari as she rejoined her..
"You're harder on me than some of my teachers," even if it was a small jab, the smile on her face made it obvious that it was just a joke. She shifted her bag and hooked one hand over the strap where it was laying against her shoulder. "I guess that's still fair though." She would have expected anyone she was teaching to try and improve too - though she was a little more patient than her fiery haired friend.
"No, I don't have to be anywhere to be," she shrugged a little and took a few steps in the direction of the locker door, then paused to glance back at Ari. "Though I'm not really sure you owe me anything, considering I've been kind of slacking off coming to practice with you in general." She laughed slightly under her breath and glanced towards the door. She didn't often let people buy her things and if Ari used an excuse she didn't particularly like she was more likely to fight it than normal. She just wasn't sure if Ari would win out in this instance - even Khalla assumed she wasn't as strong-willed as her kickboxing instructor.

Ari laughed, not sure if she should take offense or not. It wasn't like she was a real teacher. Or a very patient person. "Well, seeing as how I've never taught anyone before, you unfortunately get all my rough edges as I learn. Besides, anyone teaching this would be hard on you." She frowned and considered. "Or should be, anyway. Mistakes in any martial art can get you or someone else seriously injured, or even killed. A little more serious than the homework your other teachers give you, I think."
Or that might just be Ari's opinion on homework talking.
Walking out of the locker room, Ari shrugged at Khalla. "Maybe 'owe' isn't the right word... More like a celebration? You're improving in leaps in bounds, and there I was on the day we met worried that this would be a waste of time. You proved me wrong, and in this case I'm more than happy to be mistaken." She waved a hand in the air, honestly not too concerned with the reasons. It was more that she wanted to enjoy some time with her friend outside of the gym. "You can always shout next time, if you want."

Khalla looked away from Ari and stared at the door as she explained her reasons for being hard on Khalla - they struck far too close to home for her tastes. It wasn't that Ari could have any idea what Khalla did at night, or her reasons for coming here. Still, she was right regardless. If Khalla didn't practice, if she didn't push herself to improve, she could get herself killed - she could get her teammates killed. She shifted her feet a little in her sandals, then forced a smile on her face as she looked back at Ari.
"You're right, I guess I just didn't think of it that way," it was easy to pretend she still didn't see the enormity of the situation - after all, as far as Ari knew this was just a matter of self-defense from muggers or something of the like.
Khalla started towards the door again and had it pushed halfway open when Ari began to speak again. She glanced back at her then moved to hold the door open instead, waiting for Ari to come through as the sounds of the gym greeted her on this side. "Well, a celebration makes me feel a lot more comfortable, I think I can deal with that." She did seem more comfortable with the idea of a celebration as opposed to Ari owing her something, it showed in the way she relaxed almost immediately at the words. "Did you have somewhere in mind?"

Ari's smile was a little strained at the edges, though she tried to appear reassuring. Thankfully, she told herself, all Khalla had to worry about was not injuring herself during practice and maybe some muggers - at least she wasn't trying to beat up youma like Ari did in her free time. It was nice to know that Khalla wasn't actually risking her life on a regular basis, that Ari was protecting normal civilians like her friend.
She laughed in relief as Khalla accepted the offer. "Alright, a celebration it is. There's a small cafe on the corner, they do great milkshakes, spiders, even energy drinks to drag in the gym clientele. Does any of that sound good? Otherwise I'm sure we can find somewhere else in the area..." What with the area being a prime clubbing spot when night fell, there were all sorts of cafes and hot food spots that made a good living off the 3am cravings of clubbers.

Khalla walked along at Ari's side as they made their way through the gym, comfortable enough by this point that she didn't actually glance around nervously at the other people training around her. Dozens of burly, hardcore trainers could make anyone feel uncomfortable in a new setting. Then again, she also knew not to judge any of them by how they looked - Ari was, in her opinion, one of the most formidable trainers in the gym.
"I think a milkshake would be okay," she wasn't one for energy drinks and although she wasn't overly fond of a lot of sweet things, she could definitely do a milkshake. "That way we don't have to walk too terribly far, I'd really like to sit down and get a little rest after that workout." Since being awakened, her endurance had certainly got a lot better - running across rooftops every night could do that. Still, Ari had a way of wearing her out like nothing else could.
"Besides, it's so warm out that a milkshake would be really nice anyway." As they approached the door, Khalla took a few quick steps to reach it first - just so she could push it open and hold it for her 'coach'.

"Alright, milkshakes it is," Ari nodded, beaming brightly as they made their way to the cafe. She laughed, a little rueful, as Khalla mentioned needing a rest. She grinned, "Sorry, but consider being worked extra-hard your punishment!"
If Ari had known Khalla was comparing this to work as a senshi, Ari might have been able to explain that kickboxing used different muscles, and a different kind of focus. Ari could patrol all night as Birhan Isat without feeling any ill-effects (assuming there weren't any too-strenuous battles), but a good kickboxing workout could still leave her exhausted. Perhaps the lack of being transformed also played a part. But Ari still thought that Khalla's biggest problem was muggers, so nothing could be said.
"Thanks," Ari said as Khalla held the door for her. Pausing for the blond to catch up, Ari chose a table in the corner. It was far enough away from other patrons and the counter that they could talk without eavesdroppers, not to mention avoid that 'crowded' feeling you got when strangers were only a metre or so away from you.
Taking a seat, she picked up one of the menus on the table to see what milkshake flavours were available. "So," Ari made conversation while reading, "how did the family catch-up go?"

"You're welcome," she said with a smile, watching as Ari slipped past her. Khalla followed Ari into the little cafe, letting her trainer pick out the table. She was actually relieved to see that she picked a table in the corner of all places. Khalla loved people, she did, but she was realizing that the more time she spent as her alter-ego, the more time she wanted to spend away from the people she spent her whole night protecting. Maybe she was just feeling like she had less and less alone time, despite being by herself on a lot of her rounds.
She took a seat across from Ari and picked up her own menu, skimming over the flavors. She seemed to be deep in thought when Ari piped up with her question, and for a moment she faltered. "Well, like usual I suppose?" Which was a lie. She had been awfully mopey and confused during her parents visit since she had spent the whole time thinking about Rohan and everything that she had to do once her parents left. Not that she was really interested in spilling the details of that with Ari just yet. "It's always a little awkward since I don't see them too terribly much."
She set her menu down and rested her hand on the laminated surface before she glanced up at Ari instead, tapping her nails against the slick menu beneath them. "What about you? Did you do anything interesting while I was gone?" She would have called the server over, but she wasn't sure if Ari was quite ready to order just yet.
