It is an anime for sure. Animes all have this look about them that distinguishes them as anime. I'm not sure about it but some features are eyes, cartoon (but some are made by computer) and the story line. Usually anime story lines have some sort of wierd twist, like Spirited Away or Ponyo. Others have awkward characters or graphic scenes (an example of this is Appleseed).
But I think Avatar the Last Airbender has a slight chinese theme to it. Chinese-styled dragons are sometimes seen. Other than that, it's an anime.

i cant remember whether moving chins means a cartoon or an anime. must ATLA characters do move their chins when they speak, so im not sure. but i would classify ATLA as an anime.

The creators based the style of Avatar off of other anime, though I can't recall the anime they named. Many people argue over this topic, but I truly believe that Avatar is indeed an anime. [An American anime.]

NO, ATLA is not an anime. for one point and one point only. Anime is the Japanese form of movie pictures. ATLA is a western cartoon

It's an "american-anime" lets call it that.
The creators got the drawing styles and stuff from anime, and if you ask me I think its better than anime.

Because it's American, it's technically not. And because it's not totally lame and stupid, I say it's not either. mrgreen
The art style is clearly inspired by anime however, and the world is orientally-based. I think it looks much better than any other anime series though, and much easier to respect and enjoy as a TV show. I can't stand 99% of anime, as 99% has the exact same storyline, or are at least similar. I love the art of Avatar because it's just in between super anime style and American style. Everything's proportionate and just makes sense, but not filled with too much fantasy, wishful-thinking-like features like in most anime.

People. People. People.
Anime is animation made in japan. You could say that the style certainly has an anime flair to it, but it is by no means difficult to distinguish a western cartoon to anime.
ATLA is a cartoon. Not an anime.
Also, just to be clear, none of characters have japanese names.
