I was out fixing a rust spot on my left rear door and decided to take the left rear wheel off the other day while I was at it. Holy s**t did it look ugly. The brake drums on my car are the same ones that came out of the factory 15 years ago, and it looked like hamburger meat. Chipped, cracked, and rusted...so I decided to do a little experiment. I taped off the lug studs and center hubs with some green painters tape and sprayed around the outside of the brake drum with some rubberized rocker guard. The only place I didn't spray was where the rim makes contact with the drum.

I know which word some of you may be thinking right now. "Tool" xD

Just to let you know, I'm not a tool. This is work I'm doing to a 15 year old sedan. In this case, the black rocker guard is functional, and looks classy without sticking out like a sore thumb like a ricer's brakes would.

Anyway, I'm just kind of interested in seeing what would happen now. I painted the right rear brake drum today before I went to work, but haven't had a chance to drive it yet. I'm just waiting for a good hot day where I'll have to use more than a little brake to see if the rocker guard will smoke, or burn. I doubt it will though. Thoughts?

I think it will help with protection of the outside of it. I made them blue (ricey) on my escort but cant do that now as i have 4wheel disc. Good choice on this though pirate

Actually I do have blue Tremclad rust paint, and did have half a mind to do them blue, just to kind of go with the part where it's a Ford product, but then it would stick out too much because I've already done the door bottoms and rocker panels black anyway. In the end, black seemed to be the least toolish thing to do =P

unless it's for appearance drum brakes really don't need to be painted or coated, they last 8x longer than disc brakes which is the only real benefit to drum, Ford likes to use rear drum brakes for many of their models.

Yea Ford does.. glad I dont drive one XD Drums can go up to around 100k like they did on my jeep before wearing out too much whereas disc breaks might be able to break 50k or 60k at most with the proper driver.
