User Image Iosef was growing anxious; he knew that Terreis was with pup, and, from what he had been told, should have had them by now...but, so far, he had heard nothing, and it made him nervous. And so he did what he always did to keep his mind occupied: immersed himself in double his usual workload.

It was a bit lonely right now, though. The pup -- whom he had come to think of as his apprentice -- was elsewhere, likely busy with affairs with the Queen, so he worked in solitude. He didn't mind it so much, but it did make it easier for him to slip into thought, and for the mottled male, thought all too easily became brooding.

Forcing himself to focus on the task at hand, Iosef worked on clearing out the remnants of bone and hide leftover from kills that had not been finished, dragging them further into the woods to bury each piece. It was exhausting work, and he felt a searing ache in his muscles as he went, but ignored it.

Coming back from a recent border patrol Thealia took note of the splotchy patterned fur moving among the trees. Now just what was that slave up to? Well she had time still before the next task to check on the seemingly wayward slave. Besides as much as she loved her daughter it was quite tiresome being a mother so a break from Azalea every now and then was in order.

Padding through the thick trees Thealia kept her paws silent as she moved closer to Iosef trying to see just what he was doing before revealing herself to the lesser wolf. Finally she spotted the bones that he was dragged and couldn't help but smile a bit. Ah yes, he was attending to that small job of cleaning up the kills.

Stepping out from her shady hiding spot Thealia looked upon the slave with a critical eye, but for the moment said nothing. She knew Azalea had taken a liking to bothering the slaves, especially that young Glacier, and honestly Thealia didn't see anything wrong with it. In fact she encouraged it seeing as how the slaves were quite worthless anyways.

He paused, catching sound and scent of a superior, and immediately halted his steps. He ducked his head and tail in submissive stance, standing before her. "Apologies ma'am," he said, addressing the dirt near her paws; he had learned over time which of his superiors were patient and which were too busy to deal with the lowly likes of him -- and this impressive beta definitely fell into the latter case. "Am I in your way?"

Thealia let a scowl cross her face. "If you were in my way you would have known about it by now." She said harshly, but of course Thealia was always harsh when it came to her treatment of males. Even her sons had seen the brunt end of her anger towards that gender, two had been dropped off at their unsuspecting fathers pack and the third one still remained in Antianeira, though honestly she never paid any attention to him.

"What are you doing out here Iosef?" Brow raised as she looked between him and the pile of bones and skin. It was what he was up to, but she did enjoy watching him squirm in her presence.

If Azalea's abuse had made him smile a little, her mother's tone was received with more serious reception. "Disposing of these bones," he said, nodding to the neat stack he had dropped at his paws, ready to bury them out in the woods away from the dens. "So as not to attract any vermin." He paused; he wanted to ask her about her remaining son in the pack, as he was hoping perhaps he would get a new apprentice to train now that Glacier was growing older and more independent....but he didn't dare mention this. Perhaps she would bring it up on her own...and if not, well, he'd have to wait and see what happened.

Once again her eyes moved to the pile of bones and then back to Iosef. Only this time a smile crossed her maw, not the pleasant sort of one either, no this one was a devious smile. "I fear that they have already attracted at least one vermin." She stated with her eyes locked upon him. Surely he would pick up on her insult towards him, calling him the vermin that the bones had attracted. "But vermin or not, you shall continue your duties now. It is fortunate that I came across you here as it is clear to me you are in need of some supervision."

He had invited the remark upon himself, he mused; indeed, he would have been surprised if she hadn't taken the opportunity. His expression remained impassive as he smiled obligingly. "Yes, m'lady," he said, nosing the bones over so he could get a better hold of them, lifting the stack and carrying them swiftly beyond the tree line, searching for a good place to bury them. Something in him -- something young and puplike -- was rather happy that the worst he had to do right now was play in the dirt, and he set to digging a reasonably-sized hole with contained enthusiasm, but happiness shone in his eyes. He was working, and that's all it took to keep him happy.

With a slight huff Thealia watched him pick up the bones and walk off. Of course she followed him, because after all slaves needed constant supervision or they might start to become independent and think for themselves. And that was something she would not let happen, they may be pretty useless but better to have them mindlessly work for the sisters than anything else.

Sitting a bit of a ways off from Iosef as he began to dig the hole she watched him like a hawk. She could see the joys in his eyes, to think that some of these males lived to work for their entire lives both pleased and disgusted Thealia. "And when is your sister going to be returning to us?" She asked offhandedly knowing that Iosef was very close to his sister, not that she cared about that, but if it distracted him from his work she could always scold him for it.

His ears flicked, showing that he had heard her question, but he waited until the hole was the appropriate dimensions before dropping the stack of bone and hide into the freshly-dug earth. "I'm not sure," he said, and could not hide the uneasiness in his voice. "I had hoped she would return when the pups were born, if only to....let the sisters know that all was well." He moved dirt over the hole with his paws and his nose, smoothing it over, packing it down with his forepaws. "But I have not heard from her...I hope everything is alright."

Thealia snorted. Of course he would be worried about Terreis, Iosef was too soft in those respects - and sometimes so was his sister. She had seen them when they were growing up sneaking off to play as if they were equals. "You know she is capable of taking care of herself. Though I can't understand her decision to not return to us. She belongs in Antianeira." As much as Thealia hated to admit it, she knew she was right, the pack needed as many skilled warriors as they could get and Terreis had always excelled in her training. "But I suppose she will never be allowed to return now that she has pups to look after."

His ears drooped; he knew perfectly well that his sister was capable, but it didn't help his feelings that she might need him to lighten her burdens. At Thealia's last words, he looked up, brow furrowing. What did that mean? Other mothers had been been in the pack, including Thealia herself..."So...they have been born?" He asked, meekly. "I had not heard..."

"Of course they have been born." She snapped at him, why would she mentioned the pups if the little brutes hadn't arrived yet. "But it's no wonder that she hasn't come up to tell us the good news." Knowing how close those two were any little negative comment she could say about the pups would likely get Iosef quite worked up, and really there was something wrong with Terreis' litter. Though a part of Thealia was a bit amused at the news of the pups arrival. Lowering herself on the ground to lounge about while he continued to work Thealia glanced at him, and gave him a shrug. "Quite unfortunate really the circumstance that she and her pups are in." Her face remained neutral as she watched him closely, waiting to see his reaction.

His eyes widened in horror, muscles tensing. His expression twisted in anxiety and anguish. "What...what do you mean, m-m'lady?" He asked, desperate to keep a calm exterior for his superior but struggling with terrifying thoughts. Had something terrible happened? Was his sister hurt? Were the pups deformed in some way? Oh the thought was too terrible to bear! Tears sprang to his eyes but he fought to keep them at bay, knowing his beta would never forgive him that weakness even if he were a useless male.

Her face remained neutral as she watched his body tense up and his eyes widen. Letting out a bored yawn Thealia ignored the question for a few moments just to make him more nervous with each passing second. Finally her eyes narrowed at him, staring hard as if he had done something terribly wrong. "Did I stutter Iosef? Because I do recall speaking quite clearly." Giving her head a shake to show her disapproval Thealia sat quietly again making him wait for her to speak again. "She has really gotten herself into quite a mess - and the pups, well, we'll see what happens with them. All depends on what Terreis wishes to do with them, personally I would have walked away from them already, no point in wasting ones energy in a situation like hers."

An involuntary whimper escaped his throat and he fought every fiber in his being from the desire to tear away and run to YMCA himself to check on his sister -- an act of disobedience that would surely mean his head, and thus he restrained himself, but with immense difficulty. He hung his head, suddenly at a loss for words.
