Running. She was always running. Her hooves dug deep into the sodden grassy ground tossing up muddy patches in her wake. The longer and further she went the harder it seemed to be to move. Every step she took landed her in wetter ground until it was swallowing her up. She tried to free one of her forelegs from the sloppy mess only to find herself dragged down until the muck was up to her chest.

She sobbed and tried to free herself frantically. All around her she could see thousands of brilliant crimson butterflies with their wings all torn off. As her chest and back were completely engulfed she began to hear laughter. 'Thorn?' She cried out feebly for help but was only met by a more hysterical sound. Half her neck had sunken down into the soggy mud when she heard someone singing softly to her. It wasn't a sweet sound. It was mocking her. Tilting her head straight up she squeezed her eyes up and pinned her ears back just listening to the taunting song as she slowly slipped down.

With a gasp milky brown eyes shot open and the rosy maned mare's body shook with a jolt. Her chest rose and fell unsteadily as she tried to place what had happened. A dream. She rolled herself off of her side and on to her belly to look at the dark long grassed fields around her. It had all been a dream.

'Scarlet, dear are you okay?' a quiet voice rang out in the back of her mind. The mare nodded slowly before pushing herself off the ground. There was no way she was going to be able to sleep now. Her eyes traveled up to stare at the waning crescent moon overhead. 'At least it's not dark as pitch tonight...' She thought as she wandered away from her resting ground in search of water. It was the last thing she wanted to be near right now but her throat felt painfully dry. She had no choice.

Blood flowed in a thin, even stream, staining a pale gray maw. The view shifted to deep, red eyes, set in black sclera. But those weren't his, the eyes... Whose were they? Why did the vision hover always in the back of his mind?

Crack!

Damien stumbled around in a daze, seeing stars, before he realized what hit him. Or rather what he hit. A nice, burly oak which now had a nice, burly hollow in it. Embarrassed by his stupidity, Dai shook his head at himself, muttering discouragements. How lucky his sister was, a horn always up front to counter such 'obstacles'. But his dearest sister wouldn't stumble into trees, no.

Musing as such about his estranged family, he wasn't grasping the environment around him once more. How careless he was this strange, quiet night. This time, his snap back to reality bore no consequence; He 'woke' from his dream 'soon as he felt the water between his cloven hooves. A steam, he'd landed himself into, which was all good and well. His thirst sent him ducking greedily into the water body. When he rose, he could just make out a pale silhouette advancing in the distance.

As she drew closer to her destination she noticed that something wasn't right. Not right for her at any rate. In the faint moonlight she could just make out a dark shape moving in the water. It was far to large to be a cat or bird taking a drink. Scarlet hesitated and took a step backward biting at his rosy lip. The second she stopped she was assaulted by a pair of voices.

'There are other streams dear.' One said while another simultaneously barked out, 'Don't be such a coward!' Then they began bickering with each other. The mare's ears went backwards and she shifted anxiously. At the moment she couldn't decide which was worse, the thirst in her throat or the fear of the unknown. Both seemed a lot more bearable than listening to her friends arguing to each other about her.

"It's okay..." She murmured deciding that the best course of action was to shut them up. "I'll go." Ad just like that her legs began to move again as she headed towards the water. Her steps were fluid almost to the point that she seemed to glide rather than walk. All the while her eyes were locked on the shape until she was able to recognize it as the horse it was. It didn't make her feel any better.

She arrived at the stream and without as much as a simple 'hello' she started to drink. Her eyes never shifted away from the other.

His eyes never left the soft tan and pink hovering in the distance. Not until she advanced and he saw that she was, in fact, a grounded mare, plain as day. There were crimson marks on her chest and legs, but these details were caught in his peripherals when his gaze flicked back to the stream, started drinking once more, though his thirst was more or less quenched. If I ignore it, it will go away.

And so he was glaring with dedication into the clear pool when he noticed that the mare didn't retreat, and there were now soft, far-spaced ripples coming his way.

Damien shot up once more, thinking this mare to be rude now, 'imposing' on him as she did, drinking from his stream. Yeah, his stream. He liked the thought of that. There it was, his inner-Kalona, greedy for land and material possession..

Her stare stopped his voice from functioning. He saw such... Intensity in it. It was as if he approached her out of nowhere in the dead of night. But that milky color of her eyes... Perhaps she were blind.

"Hey." Totally cool, his voice was bland. He didn't know what to make of the occasion.

Scarlet said nothing, did nothing, even as he straightened up and spoke. It wasn't that she enjoyed being rude or had anything against him. Nor was it that she was exceedingly thirsty, the need for drink had already began to subside. What it was was a distinct lack of trust and a fear for the horned stallion.

She could see the dual points peeking out over his scruffy mane. She knew what that meant. He was a demon. He was dangerous. His eyes even seemed to glow against his dull gray coat. Definitely dangerous. One voice told her to run and quickly now that she'd gotten her drink and discovered what he truly was. It insisted that Scarlet's life was in peril. The other snorted and claimed that if she ran he would simply follow. Vanishing would only make things worse but maybe that was what she wanted.

Scarlet squeezed her eyes shut and pulled her mouth out of the chilly water slowly. She hated it when both of them were completely right but took different sides. It always made things harder for her. She wouldn't run, she couldn't. He would chase her. Chase her to the land of broken butterflies, she knew he would. It only made sense. She couldn't stay forever though, it was like facing down a nightmare. It made her blood run cold.

"Good evening sir..." She practically whispered finally turning her head to face him. Her eyes opened but she refused to look at his face. Instead she trained her eyes on the dark necklace that coiled around his throat. She wouldn't challenge him. She wouldn't provoke him into killing her.
