Chores were finally done. Wykla had to admit it was a little more fun when one had a buddy to help. Not that she wanted to do chores now, not by any means. She hoped the chores were worth it and that there really was a flit clutch nearby. If Ral' just said that to get me to help.... Wykla glares and kicks a stone. She watches it skid away.
She stands hidden in a little spot of shadow at the designated meeting place. The moon was just coming up. A darker shadow in the shadows sat at her feet. Wykla peeks her head out and scans the area. Where is she? She should of been here by now. She fidgets and tries to keep quiet.

Ralae had to wait until after the final night pass before she silently padded out of the candidate barracks. Her clothes were dark so that she could blend in easier with the shadows. This was not the first time that she had snuck out nor it would be the last.
She carried a glow that was slowly dying as she turned the corner, Ralae saw Wykla waiting patiently for her. Trying not to giggle, she moved and tapped the girl on the shoulder. "Ready?" she whispered.

Wykla turns to see the older girl in the flickering glow light. She nods then bends down to pick up the object at her feet. As it comes into the light, Ralae can see its a small food basket. She whispers back, "Yup. Lets go."
Moving beside her companion in crime, Wykla tilts her head. "How close do you think it is to hatching? What are we going to carry them back in?" She seemed to be taking it for granted they would find a clutch. Her eyes glance at the guttering glow. This was going to be fun!

A food basket! Perfect. Ralae hoped that there would be enough for whomever would be hatching. Keeping close to Wykla, the two began to journey towards the lake shores. It was a trip that took a couple of candle marks. The moons had risen and were casting a glow all over.
"I have it on good authority," Ralae spoke finally after what seemed like ages to her companion. Her hair was pulled up in a bun so that nothing would tangle or mess it up. "A blue rider was telling me that he had seen a nest near the rocky outcrop up ahead. He wasn't sure how far along the eggs were though."
The glow kept the light just barely ahead of them so that they wouldn't trip. Ralae was so excited to finally have someone to talk to that she didn't want to do anything to ruin it. "Did you ask? You are standing, right?"

Wykla shifts the basket between her arms several times. She didn't think it would feel this heavy, but how long had they been walking? The moon suggested at least severa candlemarks. Well at least if there were no eggs, she and Ralae could have a nice picnic under the moon light.
She tilts her head as Ral' explains about the blue rider. "He saw the eggs and didnt check? That's pretty odd." She snorts, "How would he not be sure how close to hatching they were? Is he a dragonrider or not?" She plainly didn't think much of this so call blue-rider.
A large grin threatens to split Wykla's face. "Yup I asked. The candidate master guarenteed I could stand. Wouldn't it be great to Impress together? And this my first time standing." She gives a soft exhale. "Does that seem greedy of me? Plus if I Impress this time, I wont be able to stand for any others." Wykla tilts her head and glances at the older girl's face.

"I never said K'lesiv was the brightest in the bunch. I think he was trying to impress some green rider whose dragon is proddy. Caselth? I dunno. But you would be surprised how much you can learn just by staying still." Ralae had happened to be passing through with a basket full of tubers and had used them to keep herself hidden.
Not that any explanation was needed.
The tween suddenly stopped and shushed her friend. There, above them, in the rocky crags near lake shore was a large sand pile that didn't look natural. Pointing, Ralae tugged at Wykla's hand and slowly began to lead them up. "We have to be careful. I don't know if this is a green or gold's nest. And yupt. That would totally be the best."

Wykla giggles at Ralae's description of the bluerider. "Apt when there's always a proddy dragon here or there. Doubt it'll make much difference though. Girls will be girls." She gives a toss of her long black hair and a grin at Ralae.
She feels Ralae tug her hand and falls quiet. Looking up at the location she analyzes it carefully. A slight frown crosses her lips as she swivels her head to look around for a mom flit.
Slowly she follows her friend among the rocks. Schooching closer so she can whisper. "Ralae, would a green really go through so much work as to put sands up here when she wont even guard the nest?" Her eyes scan around again as her body tenses in nervousness. If a gold caught them here..... maybe she was sleeping? A thought occurs to Wykla. "It's night time, what if she's sleeping on the nest?"

"And boys will be boys. You would be surprised how many turn after their first flight or two." Ralae giggled back. Not that she was supposed to know about these things. She was, after all, only thirteen turns. But honestly! When your foster mother or the creche worker or whomever herded you underground with some silly excuse, the answer was very obvious.
She stopped and blinked. Wykla had a point. A very good point. Looking around, she wondered why K'lesiv didn't have this place staked out or the eggs in the Weyr in a jar of sand hardening. Scratching her nose nervously, she looked back at her partner in crime. "Um... Maybe? You are right though. This place is pretty well protected. And... I guess we just go on."
Ralae gave Wykla her best unsure but game smile.

Wykla looks around but keeps her head and voice low. "Do you see anyone?" She tries to get a peek at the eggs. "Aren't gold eggs bigger than greens? We might be able to guess how many are there and what size from how big the mound is."
Her face almost scowls as she crouches thinking. "Well they're your eggs. You want to go first or should I?" She gives Ralae a mischievous grin.

"No, I don't see anyone. I think it's safe." Ralae moved slowly towards the sandy mound. As they crept closer, the girls were able to see the round tops of the eggs shining bright in the moonlight. Right away, Ralae counted 6 eggs. There was one that seemed larger than all the rest.
Looking around she didn't see any adult fire lizards guarding the eggs. Maybe there were out hunting? "You go around to the other side near some of the larger eggs and I will stay here. They look good and hard."

Wykla nods and her breath catches at the sight of the eggs. "Alright, which one do you want? You keep look out while I get closer. I'm smaller and I can get closer without being seen." That was what Ralae had pretty much just said, but she didn't mind stating it again.
Creeping around the rocks, the young girl creeps up close. Almost there.... two armlengths... one.... Lifting up slightly Wykla peeks into the nest. Yes the eggs did look good and hard. Quickly she spots the two biggest and makes to lift them out. One eye on the sky above her; the other eye watching the eggs so as not to jar them.

"You take the one closest to you and I will take the ones closest to me. Those two seem off on their own anyways." Ralae replied. She watched as moved closer to the egg closest to her. Staying down low, she looked back and realized she could see quite a distance in the moonlight. And there was no one around. Off in the distance, she thought she a group of flits flying around but she couldn't be positive.
Ralae turned back to see Wykla trying to lift the eggs. "Are you crazy! We didn't bring jars to lug them in. Unless you want an egg hatching under your shirt, we gotta stay here. Look over that way? Do you see what I see?"

Wykla blinks. "Oh right. I did bring the basket. We could put 'em in that if we really had too." The egg was heavy! More so than she'd thought. No she really didn't want one hatching under her shirt, all that egg goo. Ewww. Backing up she puts the basket down and quickly pulls out a couple of meat rolls. "If I toss them to you, do you think you could catch them?"
At Ralae's prompting, Wykla lifts her head and looks around. "Where are you looking?" She looks around the night sky. "What did you see? Is it the mom?" She didn't want firelizard scratches. How would she explain them to the candidate master? Though if she came up with a good enough story, maybe she could get out of chores.

"I dunno. I might be seeing things. Maybe we just better wait for them to hatch here. Or we can try to use the blanket." Ralae scooted around so she was facing towards Malvern. The wind was starting to pick up slightly and she shivered. Trying to pull herself close up and keep warmth, she looked up when Wykla asked about the meatrolls.
"Yeah, I could catch them. In this light, I could prolly catch anything. Thought I say some flits off in the distance but they could belong to somebody."
Just then a brown and blue popped in above their heads. Shards! The lookouts were back!

"I'd be surprised if someone wasn't guarding the nest. Maybe the female belongs to someone already." Wykla watches Ralae settle for a long watch and moves over to sit beside her. "Do you think they will hatch tonight?" I hope they do. I'm not sure how long we can keep doing this without being caught. If they catch us their sure to take the eggs away. Wykla gives a soft sigh.
Feeling a colder than expected breeze, she looks up. Wykla catches her breath and freezes. Her eyes wide as she watches the brown and blue. Oh dear Faranth! Have they seen us? She sits perfectly still, barely daring to breath.
