The sun was high in the sky, and there was no breeze to speak of, and the heat was beginning to get to the dark, disgruntled hyena. He was supposed to be out looking for new recruits to the pack, but he wasn't having much luck and he was getting more frustrated by the minute. The hot ground was starting to hurt his paws, and his back felt like it could catch fire at any minute, so he retreated under the shade of a small tree. There were few leaves, so the shadow was scattered, but it was certainly better than the direct sunlight.
He sighed, staring intently at the ground for a moment as he began to wonder about the usual things. His recent meeting of his daughter for the first time had him shaken up, and he spent increasingly longer periods of time wondering about if he had made the right choice in joining her pack.
It wasn't as though he didn't want to be, but he felt very strange in a pack environment. He didn't like being social, or else he would have joined the pack that his first love, Zua, was in.
"I can't even decide what's right anymore." He growled to himself, prodding at a beetle on the ground, shooing it away from his feet. "I never should have left in the first place."

From behind him, footfalls could be heard. A ways away, obscured by a few rocks, was a decently cool and empty den. Aminah had been staying there to avoid the blistering sunlight today, but had stepped out for a drink. Now, on her way back, she noticed something that hadn't been there before on her way out.
Cocking her head to the side, she looked at the hyena in surprise. "Oh, when did you get there?" she asked, more to herself than anyone else. Since when were there any hyena around here? She hadn't seen signs of any in a few days.

Kafil flicked an ear in her direction before turning to look for a moment. He sighed, and turned around, trying not to be too rude. If he was going to change his ways for the sake of his family, might as well work on being polite as well.
"Only just got here." He said with a shrug, noting the surprised look on her face. Was he really that odd of a sight? He supposed he had wandered a bit far from the pack dens, but then again many of the members stayed safely inside their little valley until a job needed doing. "Why? Do you need something?" His tone wasn't genuinely helpful, but he was trying to seem pleasant, though he was failing pretty badly.
"Er..." He paused, glancing around for a moment, trying to think of what a good host would say right about now. "Oh, my name is Kafil." he had no idea if she wanted to know that or not, but introductions usually came first right? How should he know? That's all he had ever seen anyone do upon a first meeting.

"Ah, that explains it then." the lioness agreed with a nod, "No no, I didn't need anything, I just hadn't seen you when I walked by this area a little while ago."
"Nice to meet you, Kafil. I'm Aminah." she said with another polite nod before cocking her head to the side, noticing something. "You don't look well, are you okay?"

Kafil blinked, confused. She had stopped simply because she had never seen him before? She must stop quite often then, he thought to himself. Perhaps she had nothing better to do, but then again perhaps she was just more interested in these sorts of things than he was. "Oh, alright then." He said in a rather flat tone, not particularly caring if she needed help or not. He probably wouldn't do it anyway if she had.
"It's um... Nice to meet you too." He shrugged. "I'm fine." He glanced down at the beetle again, that was now attempting to climb onto his paw. "Go away, you." He swatted at it again before looking back up at Aminah, "Oh, not you." He sighed, prodding the beetle until it was a good distance from him and glaring at it for a moment.
"Yeah, I'm alright I'm just thinking." He said, finishing his previous thought. "A lot has happened recently."

"Aha." she nodded a bit, "Well I was just on my way back home. There's a bunch of rocks over this way hiding a pretty cozy den if you need to get out of the sun for a bit. That tree doesn't look like it's helping much." Aminah commented, watching him interact with the beetle and smiling some.
"I'll be on my way then. Have a good day!"

"It's not much, but it's something." He looked up at the tree, whose leaves looked like they too were being attacked by the heat, and shook his head. "That sounds nice." he said reluctantly, not particularly wanting to spend more time with a stranger, but also wanting desperately to get out of this awful sun.
"Wait, I'll go with you if that's alright." He made up his mind, getting up and slowly wandering toward her, "I mean, more shade would be nice." He shrugged yet again, something he generally did when he was trying to act as though he didn't particularly care, "If you don't mind it. If you do, I'll just head home. There's shade there also."

"No not at all, you're more than welcome to come stay for a while." she assured him, waiting so the hyena could catch up with her. "I was just intending to nap a little and enjoy the shade, it's not like you'd be bothering me." The lioness's voice was reassuring and showed she didn't really mind the hyena's company. Kafil wasn't exactly unpleasant once you got beyond his awkwardness, and he did look like he really needed to get out of the sun. Offering her present home wouldn't be too much trouble on either of their parts.
The den was a very short ways away, behind some large rocks as she'd said. One may not notice it if they didn't know to look between the rocks for ways around them. "it's very out of the way." she commented as they headed inside the darkened cave. She lay down in the back and smiled a bit. "Make yourself at home."

"Thanks." He said gruffly. He couldn't help but smirk a bit. Perhaps he wasn't bothering her, but he wasn't about to say the same about her. Sure, she was nice and all, but pretty much everyone bothered him. Not that he was going to tell her that, seeing as she had offered him shelter for a bit.
He followed her, reluctantly speeding up a bit to keep up, and entered the cave, glancing around a bit. He watched as she lay down and he then took a spot near the entrance. He lay down and let out a sigh of relief, something rare of this hyena. The cool rocks felt wonderful against his hot belly, and the shade was such a relief.
"It's nice in here." He said with a nod, "Just like home. Perfect for a hot day like this." He mused, laying his head down and closing his eyes. He had no intention of falling asleep here, but he was very relaxed for the first time in weeks.

Aminah gave a vague noise of affirmation but was already starting to drift off. While most would say going to sleep with a strange hyena in the cave with you was probably a dumb idea, she didn't really think Kafil was anything to worry about. Anyway, it was nap time and that always made the young lioness fuzzy in the head.
