I've only heard little of them and a few very anti-feminist quotes from one of there 'gospels' The Gospel of Thomas which was written somwere in the second or third century. What do you know of them if any? I'm just curious I also know that they believe that all matter is evil and that the body we live in is just a necassary evil we must past through to reach heaven. Oh, and they claim to be Christian eek

That would make make sense that the body is something we must go through in order to reach heaven. As for their religion, I now nothing.

Yes but ALL matter is EVIL? God made all matter! It can't be evil, matter can be used for evil as a result of sin but it can't be evil in the sense that God made it.

The Gnostics also pracitce magick and are Christian mystics. eek

Actually, that is possible. I practice psychic ability and still worship God. Even in exodus the pharoah's priests imitated moses and threw there rods to the ground as well and turned them into snakes, but moses Rod/Snake ate all the priests snakes.

In leviticus the bible also forbids sea food, The bible says a lot of things, so it's best to find your own truth in there and not what someon tells you in my opinion

Hm? I don't what version of Bibles you got that from but thats easily refuted by what Y'Shua(Christ) said "It is not what goes into a mans mouth that makes him unclean but what comes out because this resembles his heart"

biggrin Jesus also said His first commandment was "love one another" and another was "If you love my Father you will obey His commandments".
Thus we are supose to try and follow things from the Old Testament(Torah) except ones that have to do with killing people like witches and certain sinners because Christ redeemed them and these are no longer necessary.

In what verse book and chapter are you reffering to? I don't know what you mean, but if I knew where to read about it I might be able to help you.

Well, you do always have to keep your allegiance true to God if that's what you mean. And I do make sure to do that.

The Gnostics believe that EVERYTHING physical here on Earth is evil, hence matter, this includes our bodies and they believe that matter is a necessary evil we must pass through to reach heaven.

I believe, although I have not studied this extensively, that they view it more as unclean.

Gnostics, as far as I can tell; you can't find many to ask around these parts, see the spiritual as pure and clean. They believe that sin and things that are not pure are only possible in the material world; the world that has been tainted. I think it is to do with either original sin or something along those lines.

They strive to be as pure and spiritual as possible, but admit that everything material is tainted, and that includes them.

To be honest, this is not too distant to the teachings of many branches of Christianity. They see original sin as existant in all humans, or at least that all humans are in some way impure from either their past sins or the sins of those before them. All of their beliefs and dogma runs towards how to cleanse yourself and then stay clean.

The basic idea in most of these is that we are all unclean, and only by becoming more spiritual do we escape sin. The details may vary, but I think it is mostly semantics and dogmatic beliefs, not the actual core of the religion.

More relevant to this guild, here is a gnostic piece talking about creation and their own beliefs in that regard. I will leave you to it;

Quote:
. . . you are the devil's gateway. . . you are she who persuaded him whom the devil did not dare attack. . . . Do you not know that you are each an Eve? The sentence of God on your sex lives on in this age; the guilt, necessarily, lives on too.
this quote is from this site and proves, though it isn't from the Book of Thomas it still proves my point that the Gnostics are sexist, and though I can't back this up many have heard they pracitece magick and I'd have to go find the other site I found a long time ago to prove this....

That's a bit of malarkey.

They use the 'Gosple of Thomas'. Just look it up and read what it says. Then decide if they are Christians are not.
