Khalla had no idea when she'd fallen so far behind in her studies. It was probably some time between her parents visiting and being upgraded to a super senshi. She couldn't pretend that the two halves of her life were growing increasingly separated, but even as different as they were becoming she still had certain duties to her schoolwork that were being affected by her "extracurricular activities". With graduation quickly approaching, she had set some time aside to work through a mound of work with swiftly approaching deadlines.

She could hear the shower in the bathroom running, which meant she had a little time to herself without Amara in the background distracting her with obscenities. Even without Amara distracting her though, her thoughts were doing a fine job of it. Her eyes ran over the paper in front of her, her pencil tapping against the corner in an irregular pattern, but she just wasn't retaining what she was seeing. She kept thinking about the Negaverse and that poor corrupted Senshi, that warning that she had left her with.

"No, concentrate Khalla," she said irritably with a smack of her palm against the top of her desk. She sighed and dropped her pencil, bringing her hand to rub against her forehead instead. She'd always had good grades, but what happened if she let her Senshi life get in the way of this? She was ashamed that she hadn't talked to Gabbie about any of this yet, especially Vivianite, but it was hard to put her burden on others when she was used to taking burdens away.

With a little frown she pushed away the essay she was working on and picked up a book instead, hoping that less output would give her brain a small reprieve. She glanced at the title without her usual enthusiasm then simply flipped to the first page and settled down in her desk chair.

Bloody %#^&ing #*&%! Amaravati was really beginning to feel the scrapes and bruises that she had accumulated in her recent hunting excursion. Reaching a hand out blindly, she shut off the water, and brought a towel up to dry her face. With the water off, she could hear Khalla muttering irritably, though she could not make out the words. There was the distinct thumping sound, and wasn't that odd? Curiouser and curiouser. Wrapping her wet hair up in a towel, she pulled the other around herself, and held it closed with a hand. Slipping into her slippers (har har), she picked her way back into their dorm room, and stood there, shaking her head.

"Khalla, what the $#%@? It's eight-thirty on a Friday night. What are you even-- How can you sit there and read on a night like this?" Personally, Amara had plans to be out and about, enjoying her freedom while she could. Of course, she'd be keeping an eye out for any senshi while she did so, or perhaps for an opportunity to nab some starseeds. Civilians were easier by far to hunt, and thus far all that she'd had success with. The thought ought to have caused a twinge of guilt, or even a pang. As it was, she could only feel that she was doing what she had to, what Sue, and all of her friends needed her to do. Their protection was far more important than any quibbles she might have about the process.

Down at her feet, Classy purred, and twined around and between her legs. The attention was not unwelcome, but it was slightly unbalancing, after a point. "Classy! Cut it out for a sec, okay?" She was found of her cat, she really was... it was just that when she was wet and fresh out of the shower she wasn't as well coordinated as usual. Which, really, said a lot. Even at the best of times, Amaravati was not a thing of grace-- though she was getting closer to that now. Training had been good for her, certainly. "Seriously, Khalla, I don't get it. It's Friday. Can't your homework wait 'til Sunday?" Frowning over at her roommate, she made an effort to balance and pet the cat at the same time. Not a good idea, as it turned out.

Five seconds later had her on the floor on her butt, a very pleased young cat purring in her lap. "^#$&#xit;, Classy!" No, that was not acceptable. Worse, and worse, the towel on her head had unraveled, and joined her on the floor. "..." That cat was seriously in need of some kind of behavioral modification. Maybe, just maybe if she could get a hold of Sue again, he would be able to train some sense into her kitten.

Although the cursing was definitely not one of Khalla's favorite attributes in her roommate, she was slowly learning to ignore it. It wasn't exactly easy to filter out the curses but the longer she had to do it, the more practiced she became. The only indication of her irritation at this point was a small sigh as she turned the page of her book, but she didn't reprimand her this time (maybe she was just too stressed for time to feel like wasting her breath) or even look up.

"I've got a lot to work on, okay?" she muttered from where she was sitting, skimming quickly over the lines as she went. "I have five essays, three other assignments, two books to read and a handful of other miscellaneous things to get done all before the end of next week." She flipped another page, trying to resist the urge to look up call Classy to her so that Amara would quit fussing at the kitten.

Unfortunately, all her concentration was shot as Amara was tipped over and landed on the floor with a loud thud. Khalla jumped almost out of her skin and stood up so quickly that her chair tumbled backwards. "Amara, what in the world?" One quick look at the pleased, purring little kitten and she sighed. She set her book down on her desk and righted her chair carefully before walking towards the pair on the floor.

"Are you alri-" halfway through asking Amara if she was okay, she noticed the bruises spotting Amara's skin. Her first thought was that there was no possible way that she had bruised so quickly, nor any way that she had hit so many places at once. She just stood there, kind of slack jawed, with her eyes roaming over the obvious signs of trauma - propriety be damned. "Amara what happened?" And there was the usual Khalla - shrill voice and a look one usually found only on a mother's worried face.

Oh snap! It was just like Khalla, just like Khalla to notice something like that now, when she had gone for weeks (no, months!) without paying it any mind. Amara brought a hand to her face, covering her eyes and just... wincing. Could it get any worse? Could it? ... It really could, couldn't it? Well, all right. So, she'd play it off like it was no big deal. "Oh, that? That's nothing." Nonchalant. She needed to act nonchalant. "Really, Khalla, it's no big." Right, and the Academy award goes to... not Amara. Picking herself up, she got to her feet, and straightened the towel, dislodging the kitten from her lap.

"Classy, you are a pain." A real pain. Classy was worse than Khalla, and that was saying something. At least Khalla was human, and therefore tended to have more than one mode. The current mode was one that Amaravati had worries about, but maybe it would pass. "Right. So, you've got a pile of homework, then." They had, if not the same classes, similar classes. That meant that somewhere there was a pile of homework waiting for her, and she was so not in the mood to deal with it.

Rolling her eyes a little, she glanced at her roommate. "Kay... are you really going to sit around and do this all weekend? All weekend?" Really? There was a certain point where school became less important than having a life outside of school, wasn't there? If there wasn't, there really should be. Giving a frustrated huff, she paced over to glare down at the essay, and book. "C'mon, Khalla, really?" It was probably not in her interests to discourage her roommate from being studious, but for some reason she just couldn't sit by and let it happen.

Not on her watch. And there Khalla was, still freaking out. At least, she thought she was still freaking out. Was Amara's ruse working? Or would she have to come up with some bullshit answer? Maybe it would be better to let her friend draw her own conclusions. Probably safer. It might be easier to ... sort of see what she already thought about it. Playing to someone's expectations was better, she seemed to remember. That was one tip her father had given her that she hadn't just tossed away out of hand, and now here was a test for it.

Khalla had heard enough lies during her time at the self-help line to know when someone was purposefully avoiding giving her a truthful answer. With bruises like that, it was no wonder that Amara would try to avoid giving her a truthful answer. "No," Khalla insisted, shaking her head and sending her dreads tossing slowly around her face, "that's not nothing, Amara!" She still looked frantic, but at least her voice wasn't as shrill.

She was only a little frustrated as Amara shrugged the issue off and turned the whole conversation back around onto her again. She crossed her arms over her chest and stood where she was, watching her roommate cross over to her desk and peer over her work. She really wished she wouldn't do that - that essay was terribly written and embarrassing. "Yes, really," she quoted back at her, "I have a lot to do and nothing to do this weekend anyway." That was a lie. She needed to get out and help Gabbie and the others with Senshi duties this weekend - she couldn't tell Amara that though. "I lost enough time when my parents were here, I can't afford to goof off again with graduation so soon." As soon as she realized that she was going off into a tangent, she frowned and narrowed her eyes on Amara across the room.

"That's not what I want to talk about though." She sighed and dropped her arms from where she had them crossed over her chest, instead letting them hang at her sides. She crossed the room to stand next to Amara, looking at her with all the suspicion in the world. "How did you get all those bruises?" Khalla wasn't one to start throwing accusations around, especially when she had no idea how it could have happened, but the fact that Amara was clearly avoiding the question meant that it couldn't be anything good. "I just want to know," she said finally, frowning as she stared at her expectantly.

Suddenly feel a little guilty for lying to Khalla (not for her reason for being out late, but for lying to her roommate), Amara shrugged a little. "Look, I know you think it's a big deal, but... I've had worse, okay?" Great. That was really helping things a long. "I'm a big girl. I can take care of myself." And she wasn't remotely exaggerating. Amara was a big girl. Maybe a little too far onto the big side by some people's standards. Those people were obviously used to skeleton thing models, and women who spent more time on their knees over a toilet than a $%*#ing pregnant woman. Definitely not her style. She was too classy for that. $%#%, there was muscle on her too, along with everything else-- and she was getting sidetracked. That was not the point.

The point was, Amaravati could take care of herself. She was more than capable of it. Being a Lieutenant meant that she was learning (slowly but surely) a more effective way of fighting. She wasn't sure she could take on a senshi just yet, but she could handle herself with the average person. Most of the bruises and scrapes were from clambering around on the rooftops, and learning how to jump properly. Not all of them, of course. When civilian types put up a fight, their punches were just as real as anyone else's. But really, most of it was from learning how to not be clumsy. That was dead important. She could be dead if she didn't acquire some grace.

"I guess I don't understand that, Khalla. You're-- we're young, and we've got our lives ahead of us. Why do you insist on shutting yourself in? Or maybe you're getting all of your fun out when you disappear?" She shouldn't be hurt by the fact that her roommate had friends, other friends. Friends that she wanted to spend time with when she did have the time. Ugh. This was so stupidly complicated. "Right. Whatever. Do your homework. I'm going to head out again just as soon as I'm dressed." Which meant under no uncertain terms that she was not going to be telling Khalla what was going on. Like %*#@ she would, anyway. She was pretty sure she wasn't supposed to, and honestly, it wasn't as though Khalla could relate.

"Worse?" She croaked out, eyes bulging a little as she brought her arms up and placed them on her hips. She wasn't as big as Amara and the imposing stance made her feel like she could make up for the difference in their body mass. Not that it ever could, but she could take some false comfort in it if she wanted to. "Amara if this isn't the worst you've ever gotten, I don't want to know what you've looked like under all those fancy clothes before." She sighed and closed her eyes, trying to calm herself down from having a complete panic attack. Who or what was doing this to Amara? She wouldn't explain the situation to Khalla, which left her imagination to run rampant.

Was this the fault of the negaverse? No, that didn't make sense. They stole starseeds, they didn't torture people. Khalla opened her eyes and stared up at her roommate in silence for a moment. If this wasn't the negaverse, if it wasn't something she could fight as a senshi, that meant she needed to look towards a more normal cause. What kind of life was she leading when she forgot about normal problems? Regardless, those ideas didn't make her feel any more comfortable.

"What?" she murmured, shaking her head a bit as she came out of her trance. She vaguely realized that Amara had been talking to her and tried to zero back in on the conversation and out of the horrible pictures she was painting in her head. "Amara, I told you I have a lot of stuff I'm busy with," she sighed as she watched Amara, heard that accusation lingering just beneath her words. "I've got work, I have to take care of my grandma, then I have all my responsibilities with my volunteer work and the charities." Not to mention a whole second life as a super hero. She trailed off and turned to walk around Amara, back to her desk, and picked up the book she had been reading. She brought it halfway up, placing her finger between the pages where her bookmark was. "I know we're young, but my whole life has been about making sure I have a future to look forward to."

Sadly, Amara's words had struck home and for the moment there was a slightly wondering look on her face. When was the last time she had stopped to do anything fun? She enjoyed most of the things she did, but none of it could be considered anything she did for herself. Even the visits with Gabbie were brief at the best of times. She simply sighed and sank back into her chair, staring at the pile of work in front of her. "I just have a lot of stuff to do before graduation, then I can take a break."

"It's none of your business, Khalla!" Amara snapped, and it was obvious from the way that she was not swearing that something was wrong. When angered, she tended to resort to swearing all the more... so, she was hurt. Hurt, not angry. Maybe resentful? Resentful of her roommate, who led such a different life, who was just going to sit there and tell her that she had all of this stuff to do, and had no time to have fun. No time for Amara, came the translation. Not that they tended to socialize together, but it was obviously something that she'd been thinking about. What if she wanted to spend time with Khalla?

As crazy as that sounded, coming from a girl who liked to party more than she liked to do anything remotely laid back or studious, she... kind of wanted to have a more normal fun time. With, you know, her roommate. The one she hardly ever saw? "Look, Kay, you just... you wouldn't understand even if I told you, okay? So, I'm not going to bother." Eyes flashing, the girl retreated in a very uncharacteristic manner, going to her closet to throw something together. Also very uncharacteristic. "I get that you're busy. You make that very clear." Oh she was pissed now, but there was still an undercurrent of hurt in there somewhere.

It just wasn't fair... which was stupid. Life wasn't fair. But $#%&it, if Khalla didn't start loosening up sometime soon, she wasn't sure what she might do. Choking back more angry words, she got dressed as swiftly as she could. "Yeah, you just keep looking forward to that future. I'll see you around. I'm going out." And that was the end of that, as far as she was concerned. %#$* this. She didn't have to sit around and have Khalla worry over her, watch her study her way into exhaustion. What did she do on the weekends, anyway? "While you're at it, maybe you can think about using that recipe for your grandma." A reminder that she knew that Khalla had forgotten all about the recipe she'd shared with her. The one she said she wanted to try out.

Now dressed, she grabbed up her purse and stalked out the door. She hadn't bothered to comb her hair-- what did it matter how her hair looked when she was only planning to go home? Not home to stay, of course, but home to use the kitchen there, as she wouldn't do at the school. It wasn't worth the effort, and she didn't have the ingredients handy. Let Khalla think that she was going off to have a wild night somewhere. She didn't care. There was nothing, nothing at all that would convince her to sit down and take more of the questioning.

Khalla opened her mouth and shut it again as Amara snapped at her, looking like a fish out of water with her bulging eyes. People rarely actually snapped at her in anger. She watched her as she went to the closet, then turned to look away as Amara began to throw her clothes around and hastily dressed.

It was only as Amara said she was going out that Khalla looked up again. She didn't know what was wrong with her or what she had done to make her so upset. Amara seemed to have a fun time whenever she went out, didn't she? Besides, nothing Khalla did seemed to be the kind of thing that Amara was in to. For a moment she wondered if all of Amara's fuss over her work tonight had been a hint that she wanted to go out and do something with Khalla, but if it was a hint it was a bad one - why didn't she just ask? It was what Khalla would have done.

She opened her mouth to say something, but was cut off at Amara's retort about the cupcakes. She was left staring at the back of the door, lost and confused. For a moment she simply sat there, her book forgotten in her hand and her bright eyes fixed on the pale wood as if Amara might stalk back in at any moment and apologize. When she didn't though, Khalla looked back down at the essay, but she wasn't reading the words. Her teeth sunk into her bottom lip and she could feel the pinpricks of hot tears gathering at the corners of her eyes. No one said things like that to her, not ever. Delphine had made her angry, Castor pissed her off, but no one purposefully tried to hurt her feelings before. She wasn't equipped to handle such a torrent of strong, negative emotions from someone else when they were directed completely at her.

Confused over what she could have done to earn such spite from Amara, Khalla sniffed and scrubbed the back of her hand against her cheek to rub away the tears before they fell. She stood abruptly then, suddenly uncomfortable in the dorm room she shared, and began to hastily stuff all of her things into her school bag. At first she thought of going to Gabbie's, but something about that felt wrong - it'd be far too much like a lie when she told Amara she was going to do homework tonight. So instead, as she slung her bag over her shoulder and turned off the light to their room, she was already dialing her grandmother on her cellphone to tell her she was coming home for the night.
