After the standard "punishment chores" of latrine cleaning and numbweed duty, working in the kitchen had to be Soldekai's least favorite of the Candidate chores. It wasn't that the work itself was particularly repellent or difficult... at least, not normally. But it turned out that while the apprentice beastcrafter was perfectly fine dealing with live creatures, once they had ceased being alive and started being ingredients he was pretty much hopeless. The cookingcraft equivalent of tone-deaf, if there is one, his brother used to joke. Well, back when they lived together at the Hold. It seemed like such a long time ago now...
Then again, at the same time, it felt like only yesterday that he'd hopped off the Searchdragon's back and ended up here. And now, there was a clutch on the sands hardening... It was an intensely exciting time for all the Candidates, and Soldekai was no exception.
At any rate, the kitchen staff were content to give him the simple tasks that were hardest to screw up. And while his tubers weren't the neatly peeled ovoids that more experienced helpers could produce, he could at least handle a knife with sufficient competence. Lost in the doldrums, he half-zoned out, rather hoping that a fellow Candidate would come along. Having someone to talk to always made the time go faster, especially with speculation about the new hatchlings.

Arelly hopped back towards the kitchens with a spring in her step. Ah, the first activity of the day! The surroundings conjured up memories of home, where she fondly recalled her mother hard at work, and how her training with her father kept her away from the mother-daughter quality time of cooking together. Needless to say, whenever she was assigned to help in the kitchens now, she relished the opportunity. It was like getting a second chance to try the things she missed in life the first time around!
Granted she wasn't particularly good at working with food, but skill came with time and practice, right?
The kitchen staff was brief in their assignment and nodded her over towards where another Candidate was doing preparation work. She smiled and moved happily back towards where the young man was stationed, sliding into an open spot next to him on the table. "Hello!" she chirped, reaching for one of the knives to help with peeling. "Looks like we'll be doing this together. How many tubers have you peeled?"
As eager as she was to get to work, might as well make it more fun!

Oh hey, there was his company! "Hello!" He beamed and waved... but didn't actually drop the tuber that was in his hand, so mostly it looked like he was just waving a half-peeled tuber at her. Smooth. Real smooth.
Soldekai edged over a bit so that she would have more room. When she asked her question, he glanced over at the sad little pile of peeled vegetables. "Um... Let's just say I've got a little ways to go." Kind of hopeless. Still, practice made perfect, right? Eventually, if he kept at it, he'd get it right.
His new companion and partner seemed like a very nice girl. Chipper, too - he tried not to hate anyone, but it was always something of an ordeal when you ended up with one of those sullen, grumpy types who didn't want to talk to you. What was the point in that? It just put everyone in a bad mood. So he was glad that she seemed open to chatting. "You look familiar, but I don't think we've been introduced - I'm Soldekai. And you are?"
