The Daleks popped up in series 1 (season 27)... no surprise, since they're by far the most popular Who monster. And it's been widely publicized that the Cybermen will be back in series 2 (hopefully with their pet cybermats). Again, not surprising, given that they've always clearly been #2 in terms of popularity.
But what should be the next classic monster slated to return? I think the #3 spot in any Who monster poll is very much up for grabs. Candidates include the Autons (already back), Ice Warriors, Sea Devils, Silurians, Sontarans, and the adorably cuddly Yetis. Personally, I'd like to see the lumpy-headed Sontarans again... not only have they appeared opposite four Doctors (Pertwee, T. Baker, C. Baker and Troughton), but they've even managed to invade Gallifrey itself. My guess is, however, that the Guinevere One mission to Mars may be a foreshadowing of the return of the Ice Warriors...

You're right in the foreshadowing. I have information from a very reliable and accurate source that the Ice Warriors are the most likely to return. Personally I would love to see the Yeti return.. or maybe just the lost tapes of The Web of Fear to be discovered... that story seems so atmospheric it probably could have been a cult horror movie.

Well, first of all i don't like the use of terms like "monsters". There are really very few "monsters" in DW if you think about it: just villanous aliens and other Bad Guys from Earth. "Villanous aliens" covers everything from Daleks to the Master, and anything else in between.
Some villanous aliens are traditional, such as Silurians, Daleks, the Master, Cybermen, and Sontarans. These are "cross-Doctor" baddies.
Daleks and Cybermen have returned, of course. We are not surprised by that, and whatever we are led to believe, you know they will somehow return again some day. Autons returned, but until now they were strictly a 3rd Doctor villain, and only mentioned once in a 4th Doctor story. Modern special effects make villians that once looked really cheesy now seem much more believable. The Sontarans have been around since Doctor #3, so I suspect they will make a return. Silurians are not exactly bad guys, but they do pose a threat. I am a little foggy on which Doctors the appeared with, but they would be good candidates for a possible reappearance in some form of other.
And then there's the Master, of course, who has managed to touch all of the Doctors except for #9 and so far #10. Personally, I was glad that the TARDIS finally ate him. I don't want him to come back. I think his welcome was worn out during the 6th & 7th Doctor eras where he came off as a ridiculous, tedious man in black who was the lapdog of an even more annoying villain, the Rani ( Hindi for a female Rajah, if you needed to know). He had become a caricature of himself, and the very last time we saw him, he was in yet a second stolen body, and was doing an imitation of the Terminator.
Speaking of the Master, does it strike anyone else as odd that when the Master stole the body of Nyssa's father (4th Doctor story) that he mysteriously drew black hair and a beard and his costume morphed into a black suit? At least in the 8th Doctor story he just got inside an existing body - not unlike Edgar the cockroach in "Men in Black". It made more sense, and would have left a level of the grotesque that would have made the Master truly creepy - creepier than he was back in the infamous "Deadly Assassin" episode that reintroduced people to the Master.
Let's just concentrate on some good new bad guys.

He's hanging out with Omega now, if he's still alive! biggrin Do you think they'll get on each other's nerves?
I'd like to see them show the Silurians as they were in the novels--eventually coexisting peacefully, as "Earth Reptiles". In some future story they wouldn't have to be the villains.

Velvetnight BRING THE MASTER BACK!!! (i know his not really an alien, unless you call the doctor an alien aswell, but he was really funny) From the viewpoint of humans, anyone who comes from another planet is`an alien. including the Doctor. The Doctor himself has admitted as such.

A possible SPOILER for a returning foe in Season 3, so don't read the rest of this message if you don't want to know... *************** According to The Mirror, it looks like the Ice Warriors are indeed set to return next year. Indirect source: Outpost Gallifrey***************
