Welcome to a thousand years of pain, *caugh* ahem...
this thread is devoted to the harsh reality of Japanese daily life, including those catch phrases that never make it past the censors.
We will begin with Kancho: the naruto symbol you may be familiar with with hand gestures of two fingers pressed together is actually an elementary through 1st year junior high child prank of attemtping to impale the target up the rear. No joke.
There are diagrams & everything on google.
if you have other idioms or cutlural expressions/actions which only maek sense in Japan, or oddities (like cellhpnoe cameras that beep really loud to avoid voyerism) tell us about it ^_^

LOL I saw "kancho" and I had to come in here. I learned the term from my husband, and kancho seems to be a staple for Japanese men's dirty jokes.
Apparently it abounds in the high schools. Kinda like "pull my finger". My husband told me a story (but I think it is an urban legend because I've seen numerous variations on TV) that some kid tries to do kancho to the person who sits at the desk in front of him while they are sitting down... and end up breaking their finger! rofl LOL can you imagine telling your parents how you did that?
By the way, the translation means "enema".
God there must be tons of other little black jokes and pranks that are Japanese staples, but sadly I wasn't very into the young crowd (i.e. high school kids). Of course Japanaese hit each other when something stupid is said, usually on the head. And that is normal, no fights would start from it (usually/hopefully). The person who gets hit usually giggles. For a good example which occurs frequently, I recommend tuning into Hey Hey Hey. downtown takes the liberties of hitting gorgeous celebrities without ever worrying if there are consequences! eek

Hehe Kancho caught my eye too. When I first started kids training at Nova I was warned that many kids would try to do that to me (which is why I conducted most of my lessons sitting on the carpet (stuff the LMP's).
I think I was the only one at my school in Urawa that hadnt had the kancho done to them (except for one of the long timers that flat out refuses to teach kids).

kancho! sweatdrop ..i read about it on the log of an american english teacher in japan and mentioned it to the wrong one of my friends once.. life's become a bit more dangerous ..lol..well its not a 'real kancho' because that probably would be a thousand years of pain..

Kancho! Ouch xd . I laughed soo hard when I read that part in the Naruto manga where kakashi used Konoha villages "most secret and sacred technique" rofl . Anywayz, I don't know too many insane inside japanese jokes but here's some idiomish expressions I know 3nodding .
手を焼く to have a hard time
[lit: to burn one's hand]
丸く収める to settle something
[lit: to finish roundly]
何はともあれ anyway
[lit: whatever a thing may be]
湯水のように使う
to throw money around
[lit: to spend money like water or hot water]
手を打つ to take necessary measures
[lit: to clap one's hands]
百も承知 to be fully aware
[lit: to know even a hundred]
心を入れ替える to change one's habits
[lit: to replace one's mind]
