It was just another Thursday.
It was just another counseling session with Mr. Nguyen.
It should have been just like any other Thursday.
Unfortunately, that was not the case. True enough, Howl had walked into Vietnamese counselor's office, punctual as always. Before sitting down, he shook hands with the man who would be once again assisting him sort out his worries. He nodded his head and politely uttered "Mr. Nguyen" in greeting.
Yet something was completely off with the scenario.
Despite his manners, Howl was usually a rather pleasant lad. It was a rarity to see him without that gentle smile of his, but today seemed to be one of those days. His lips did not form a curve, but instead was pressed into a straight line.
The counselor had worked with him long enough to know what this meant. Howl Wickham's had somehow found a way to get snagged over some sort of issue, and as usual, he was having difficulties moving past the issue on his own.

Howl Wickham was usually a pretty pleasant guy. He had his issues -- all of Hillworth had issues -- and at first, Edward Nguyen had found those issues uncomfortable to deal with: he was a rich boy from a rich home who had a problem with the words lay off. He'd been shunted to Hillworth as a payoff deal so that the media wouldn't have a field day with it. Young rich white girl abused by young rich white boy would have been a media circus, and Howl never would have found peace in Destiny City again. Not with his pretty mugshot splattered on the newspaper.
You could almost see the magazine headline: GREAT LOOKS, GREAT MARKS -- AND HE PLANNED TO KILL HER BOYFRIEND IN COLD BLOOD!
On meeting him Howl was very softspoken and did everything the psych said, and the keyworker meetings were so uneventful as to be coffee breaks inbetween the worse students. It was still stupid to send him to Hillworth. Howl obsessed over things he couldn't get. The day he walked out of there it would be a challenge with the first really pretty girl he met, after being cooped up in the Hill for the rest of his highschool life, and that was setting him up for trouble.
"Assuming makes an a** out of me," said Mr. Nguyen, "but I can see something's wrong. Talk to me as I sugar up my coffee, please." (Mr. Nguyen had those little McDonald's packets secreted in his pockets.)

Normally, Howl would have let Mr. Nguyen's phrase butchering alone. However, in a somewhat distanced tone, he mentioned "You said the phrase wrong." However, the other option would have been for the counselor to indirectly call Howl an a** as well. It probably was his intention to avoid calling the student an a**, and in all honesty, the preferred option of the two. Yet, Howl figured that Mr. Nguyen should know that he had murdered yet another saying.
The teal-haired lad turned away as the counselor tended to his coffee, eyes casually catching upon one of the posters on the wall. His hands were folded absolutely politely upon his lap, and for a moment, it would have seemed as if he was ignoring the request altogether.
Yet, when he finally did speak, it seemed a bit strange. Howl was the sort who had been raised to politely look at the person he was going to speak to. So when he started to speak while still facing the poster, it was a rather noticeable change.
"I saw Mother."
Those were the only three words he offered to the table. Howl was reluctant to speak it would seem, since normally he would have gone into further detail with much ease. Also, this was the boy who had gotten extremely mopey because he hadn't been able to see his parents during the holidays. If anything, Howl should have been glowing with happiness rather than glowering in a Howl-like fashion.
