Shade couldn't believe that he was up this early on a Saturday; normally, he didn't get up before noon. 11:00 was usually the earliest time for him. For possibly the millionth time, he wondered why he WAS up, and it took him a few moments to remember - he needed a job. His mother had been having a hard time with the bills lately, which was why he was out here. Him having and job and contributing would certainly help to lighten the load on her, despite the protests that she'd been giving him.
The impling boy had been passing resumes out all morning. Most of the places that he'd applied at had been fast-food restaurants and stores near his house, since there were few options for a kid his age - he wasn't exactly old enough to work anywhere that they sold cigarettes or alcohol, after all. If he was lucky, someone would call him.
Currently, the boy only had one resume left and he wasn't entirely sure of where to bring it. He'd covered most of the area near the apartment, so there weren't many choices left.
His eyes fell upon the sign in front of a small establishment; 'Sweet Swirls Bakery' was what it read. After a moment of thought, the boy scurried inside - he might as well give it a shot. Perhaps he'd be lucky and the owner would need some help.
"Hello?" He peeked up over the counter nervously, spotting a woman on the other side of it. "Um...miss? I don't mean to bother you, but...would it be alright if I dropped a resume off here...?"

Aislynn was on her way to the sink when she heard the bells above the shop doors jingling, the door closing, and cautious footsteps into the shop. Hurriedly, she dumped the pans unceremoniously into the large sinks, and rushed out to meet what she thought was a customer. Again.
It had been busy, today; or, as busy as the little shop ever got. It seemed that word was beginning to get out about her tiny bakery, and people were coming to see what the hubbub was all about. Most of them didn’t expect what they found. Which was a tiny café, stuck between two large buildings, nearly unnoticeable; and its’ scatterbrained owner, flour on her face and food coloring staining her forearms. The food coloring, of course, came from the colourful swirls that decorated most, if not all, of the treats in her counter. Sweet Swirls. She thought it was rather clever.
Zak, of course, did not agree. He didn’t agree with her on much, and she often wondered why he kept her around at all. He did have her best interests at heart, though, and after today she was beginning to see some sense in what he’d been saying since day one. She needed some help. At the time, she’d stubbornly insisted that her shop would never get so busy that she’d need someone else to work, but, well….it was beginning to seem as if her pompous brother had been right.
Zak was never going to let her hear the end of it.
By now, she’d gotten to the counter, and somewhere among these thoughts she managed to notice that the boy; whom, she noted, could also be a girl, was talking to her. It was as if he (she?) had read her mind.
She was silent for a few moments more, leaning forward on the counter. He, for she could now see that the effeminate Impling WAS in fact a boy, was tiny. Shorter than she was, which was both surprising and pleasant all at once. He was also adorable, with big golden eyes and ears that she wanted to reach out and pet. He couldn’t have been more than…what, twelve? And that was pushing it. As she stared at him, her hand, as if on its’ own, reached out to touch his cheek, which was as soft as it looked. When she discovered this, she giggled delightedly, and moved her hand to tweak his even softer ears. Of course, she did this without the knowledge that the appendages were, in fact, very sensitive. She’d never met an Impling before. As she touched his ear, however, he let out an odd series of squeaks, which brought Aislynn back to earth. It was about now that she realized that the boy had been staring at her with a mixture of apprehension and fear for quite some time, and also that she must have appeared rather strange.
With a yelp, she pulled her hand back, holding it to her chest and staring at him. Unfortunately, words escaped her, and she could only stammer.
”Oh! Um…Um…Pardon?”

Well, this certainly wasn't what Shade had been expecting. The teenager had managed to get the woman's attention - despite how busy it was - but she didn't exactly respond to his question. Actually, she didn't something quite strange that left the boy feeling rather uneasy and uncomfortable.
First, she reached out and touched his face. His cheeks immediately flushed pink and a confused look came into his eyes. Before he could ask her to stop however, he found that her hand had moved to his ears. A shiver immediately ran down his spine and he squeaked. The feeling was pleasant, but he didn't particularly like it when strangers touched his ears. It was kind of embarrassing.
The impling boy forced himself not to let out a sigh of relief when the hand finally pulled back, though his face was still a bright colour of crimson. The woman looked as though she hadn't even been aware of what she'd been doing - strange. It took him a moment to sputter out his own response.
"I j-just...um...w-wanted to know if I c-could...uh...d-drop off a resume..." He was now wondering if that was a good idea though, what with the little ear-molestation that had just taken place.

"A resume?" She frowned, looking at him closely again. Yeah, he couldn't be any more than twelve. "Sweety, are you sure you're old enough to be handing out resumes? Why don't you cut people's lawns, or something..." She propped her fist up on one hand, eyeing a couple in the corner. They were finishing up, and would come to the cash soon. She'd have to hurry with this kid, or she'd have to ignore somebody... And as much as she hated being so busy, she couldn't exactly ignore her customers. But it would be dreadfully rude to ignore the boy, and...and...
And she was spacing out again.
She brushed some flour from her nose, blowing a strand of loose hair from her face. "How old are you, anyways? Twelve?"She frowned, slightly. "I mean, you're cute, but I don't think I'm legally allowed to hire anyone less than, like, fourteen...or something. I'm not too clear on laws. Zak usually takes care of that. I just bake and look pretty." She grinned, trying to appear friendly. He did seem creeped out; as was the general reaction to her...unusual nature.

Old enough? Shade looked confused for a moment before he realized what the problem was - she thought that he was a little kid. "I...well..."
"How old are you anyways? Twelve?" Well, if the boy hadn't been embarrassed before, he certainly was now. For a moment, he could only stammer, unsure of what to say in response. This was...what? Possibly the 100th time that someone had gotten his age wrong?
"I-I...I'm sixteen...actually..." His face burned and he looked quite abashed. This wasn't going as well as he'd have hoped. "I...have my student I.D, if you don't believe me..." He very much doubted that she did believe him, really - most people didn't when he initially told them his age.

Aislynn, unconscious of how rude she was being, gaped a little. "Sixteen? Really? Wow...Well then, yes you may!" She reached foreward and gently took the resume from his trembling hands, reading it over quickly. "Hm...Says here you're good with technology. That's great, because I can't tell heads nor tails of the things. My brother doesn't allow much in his house..." She pulled a pen out and circled that, as well as some other useful information. If, by the end of this conversation, the kid's paper was circled enough, she'd consider hiring him. "Ever serve customers before?" She asked, grinning. "Or deal with someone having a fit?" Shade, lucky as he was, could consider this the interview that people usually called back to set up. But, she figured he was here anyways, so what was the point in having him leave? She circled a few more things on his resume, before looking up expectantly for some answers.

The boy hung his head as the woman took his resume - did she have to emphasize on how young he looked? Really?
The boy blinked as the girl began circling items on the page. She also seemed to be talking to him and...she was asking him questions? Was he being interviewed? It took the boy a moment to spit out a response, as he hadn't been expecting the questions. "I-I've babysat fussy kids a few times, but...other than that, I've never r-really had a job before..." Technically, this would be his first 'real' job, and that would only happen if anyone actually hired him.
"I can f-fix most electronics, modify them, and s-sometimes build them..." He didn't know if any of that would be of any good here, but he might as well point out what strengths he had, right?

"You can fix electronics?" Aislynn's head perked up. "Awesome! You are totally hired! Can you start now? I've got an oven in the back that totally blew out this morning, and the cash register doesn't open properly." She babbled, stuffing his resume beneath the counter, along with an assortment of other papers that she deemed relatively important. Bills, reminder notes... Not that she ever looked down there. Notes to self were redundant, wishful thinking, when it came to Aislynn. She wouldn't notice even if they were written on her forehead via tatooing. "I can pay you minimum wage, whatever that is. I'll find out later. And you can eat while you're here, since sweets are for eating. I mean, you can't eat me out of a shop, but I won't mind if you grab a nibble every once and a while. OH! I'll also need you to sign some stuff..." She rummaged around, not so scatterbrained that she would let a sixteen year old run amok in her kitchen without some sort of health agreement. When she rose, however, she wasn't holding forms. She was holding her spare apron, which she handed to him. "Your uniform. Wear black pants, and I've got a coat in the back for you to wear." She herself was wearing black pants, a white coat with the sleeves rolled up, and an apron decorated in swirls. The outfit was, miraculously, clean. It was strange, considering the rest of her was coated in flour, food coloring, and other baking mishaps.

"I, um...y-yeah, I guess I can." Shade hadn't been expecting to be hired so quickly. He supposed that he shouldn't complain though - a job was a job, no matter how odd his new boss seemed to be. "I just...can I call my Mom first? She'll be worried." The impling boy filed away the items that the woman said needed fixing; he wasn't too worried, really. That sort of thing could be fixed in a matter of minutes. He took the apron as it was handed to him and nodded slightly. The uniform looked fairly normal, considering that they were in a bakery. He just hoped that he'd be able to make sweets alright - he wasn't exactly known for his cooking skills. Maybe she'd only make him put icing on pastries or something. "Thanks." He couldn't help but feel relieved - maybe they wouldn't have to worry so much about money anymore.

"Oh, of course! Call away, there's a phone in the back. Just by the bathroom, actually, so you can go and change. If there's a problem and you can't, that's totally okay, but, you know..." She trailed off as a customer walked in and turned away from Shade, hurriedly attending to them as they came to the counter and leaving the impling boy to his phone call and his uniform.

Shade nodded quickly and thanked his new employer before hurrying into the back. He soon found the phone and quickly gave his mother a call, letting her know where he was and what was happening. It took a few minutes for her to go through how proud she was of him for getting a job but that he'd still have to keep up with his schoolwork, etc, etc.
"Okay, Mom. I know...I will. Love you too. Bye." He hung up and quickly found the coat that the woman out front had told him about before ducking into the bathroom to change. Soon, he was in the uniform - though it was a little big for him - and was scurrying out to the front. "So...w-what would you like me to do first, Miss...?" It was then that he realized that he hadn't gotten a name from her. "Um, sorry, I didn't get your name...and I'm Shade..." Though, she'd probably read that off of his resume, but it seemed like the polite thing to do anyway.

Aislynn bumped the drawer of the cash closed with her hip as Shade came out, eyeing the uniform. "I'm Aislynn." She smiled at him, walking over and propping her hands on her hips. "Hum. A bit big... Well, Zak can take it in. We'll have to bring you to see him some day, maybe. Until then, do you think you can look at the cashs' drawer, first? I'm tired of prying it open with a knife." She'd broken two butter knives already; thank god she'd brought them from home. Then again, there was no way she was wasting any of her good utensils, and risking them breaking. That was just...crazy talk. Like a food fight. Why would you throw perfectly good food around? Especially her cakes! They were way too pretty to throw. Almost too pretty to eat.
"If anyone comes in, ask what they want. All the treats I have today are in the counter. Get them what they want, and they'll pay, sit down, eat, then leave. If they're placing an order, write it down on this pad of paper, charge them for it, and then tack it up on the wall. That's pretty much the gist of the job. If you need any help, I'll be in the back, prepping tomorrows' bake." She instructed, smiling before she ducked into the kitchen. She'd really need to find out how much she was supposed to pay the kid...He'd get all of his tips, of course, but actual payment...
'I'll just make Zak find out.' She thought, before busying herself with rolling buns.

Shade couldn't help but flush as Aislynn mentioned that the uniform was a little big, not that he was surprised. It was rare for anything to fit him properly, really. The boy nodded though, moving to take a look at the drawer. "I can do that, y-yeah..." It wasn't fixing things that he was worried about - it was looking after customers. He didn't exactly much much experience - or any, really - in that field. He became quite uneasy when he thought about it, but knew that he'd need to get used to this.
"R-Right." He could do this. It would all be fine if he just kept calm. Well, that and so long as they didn't get any rushes...the impling boy knew that he'd get overwhelmed if that happened. Aislynn was in the back room though, so if he needed help, he could always just go get her...
For now though, he'd focus on fixing that drawer.
