"What My Heart Yearns For"

User Image

Shadows crept into hiding as the morning sun found its way through the moss-dripping cypress grove. Weeping Mist had been up before dawn to catch a few slow moving snakes before they warmed up in the heat of the day.

A low flying marsh bird caught Weeping Mist’s attention. She watched it glide in to land on a nest hidden among the tree limbs. Squawks of hungry hatchlings rose as the marsh bird disappeared from view. Hungry babies brought Mist’s thoughts back to the new life blossoming inside her. Is this what I’ve had been searching for? Was this void that I’ve felt for so long, going to now be filled? Will bringing forth this new life bring me peace? Mist glanced back to where she’d last seen the swamp bird. Why then, do I still feel unhappy?

Dropping her nose to the damp earth at her feet, she whispered, “Mother Swamp, let my searching be at an end. Let me find what my heart yearns for.”

User ImageMourning Fog's tail twitched restlessly this morning. It was calm and peaceful, but he felt uneasy, with an urge to find something. His eyes panned the trees around him and what little of the rising sun he could see. Through the dappled light, his pale form rose and began to move. As he did, voices sounded in his head. Male, female, old, young. They all whispered to him, guiding him somewhere...

Although finding his other moth half made him feel complete, there was still what seemed like a fragment of his heart was missing. He had heard the rumors that he had a twin. He was born under that star sign, even. But he had never seen her, or even heard her name...And through the words of the ancestral voices, he could make out something. It was soft, barely audible. Yet each time he heard those words, a sense of familiarity grew within. He felt like he knew those words, yet could not understand what they were..

A bird flitted by him, and he followed it aimlessly, until reaching a clearing. His eyes were focused on the bird and its young. He wondered about Cascade-of-Darkness and her young. He wondered aobut the filly he deemed old enough to stay home alone for once. He wondered about Life-Pulse, his true love, and the day they would have children of his own. He wondered about the family he never met, save Streaked Sky. He wondered...

Weeping Mist raised her head and heaved an enormous sigh.

"Mother Swamp has no answers for me." Mist's gaze roved over the swamp around her. "Not even a hint," she said with a stomp of her foot. Heaving another sigh, a flutter of movement caught her eye.

Hints of lavender floated in and out of the foliage revealing a pale colored moth. A sense of something familiar spread over Mourning Mist. She watched it flutter in the direction where the bird disappeared. It seemed to hover for a bit. Curiosity piqued by the unusual moth, she continued watching it, her frustation with Mother Swamp temporarily forgotten.

What could be familiar about a moth, she wondered.

Bored, the stag shifted into his moth form, following after the bird. As he drifted towards the bird, it began singing out at him. A fine tune it made, and if his moth form could, it would smile. He felt as though someone was watching, and turned to look.

But what was this? It looked as though he was gazing at his own reflection, distorted by the water's ripples. This kimeti...looked just like him, though it was smaller..a doe..

He stopped breathing for a moment, his wings still, until he began to fall, and he fluttered laborously to gain his flight again. For another moment he merely hovered, unsure of this..

Could this be?...

He shifted back into his kimeti form, and took a step forward.

"Sister?" he uttered to his twin.

Weeping Mist watched the moth as it drifted towards her. Her eyes widened as the fluttering wings blurred and began to change shape. Mist took a step back as the image grew, in colors of lavender and cream, forming the shape of a stag. She knew those colors, they were her colors.

When he spoke, it was like a voice she'd been waiting to hear for so long without realizing it.

“Brother?” she responded. As soon as the words were out, she knew they felt right.

Mourning Fog was speechless, a weak, nervous smile cracking on his lips. He shook his head, almost in denial. It was too good to be true! Finding his long lost sister, twin at that, after all this time. Her voice familiar, like his own almost, even though it obviously wasn't. He couldn't find the words, he couldn't think of what to do. He had planned finding her hundreds of times, but what would he do after?

"My twin sister...I've finally found you..do you know my name?" he asked, chuckling as he moved closer. His steps were hesitant, unsure of how to act. Surely she would not be embarrassed with him, right? If he happened to move to quickly and fall, or trip on his own legs? Or if he stood there like an old tree? The first immediate relative he's met...and there were others to meet, still. Would he be this nervous with them?

Always full of questions, he was. He shook his head again. There was so much to share. And a single tear, filled with long-awaited joy slid down his cheek, disappearing into his short coat.

So many emotions rushed through Weeping Mist, she wasn't sure what to feel. First awe for being in the presence of a Legendary. There were so few of them, she felt honored to be in the presence of one. Then confusion. He called her.. 'twin sister'. The words felt true, but she was sure she'd met all her siblings. And he seem... almost shy.

Then she saw the tear and her heart melted. "Brother," she said softly with a smile. It all seemed to make sense now. The piece of her that she'd felt had been missing. The emptiness that she had been searching to fill.

A thought creased her brow. "I don't understand. How can we be twins, though I don't deny that we are, but there was no one beside me when I awoke."

"I'm...not sure" he said, words airy, voice cracking. He stayed silent for a moment, catching his breath and calming his nerves. Then he looked into her eyes and tried to remember, as if she were a catalyst. His vision faded, streams of pale colored light streamed by him and a blurred memory appeared before him. It was as if he was looking through the rippling surface of a clouded pond. Before him lay a slightly larger sac, compared to the ones beside it. Two separate beings slept within. Two heartbeats, one rhythm. The vision rippled, now he saw as one tumbled out of the sac, dripping with fluids, stumbling to stand. Before he knew it, he blinked, and saw the doe that was his sister. The vision over.

"I..." was all he could muster. What had he just seen? A memory? Her memory? He shook his head to clear his thoughts. Incomplete as it was, it helped a little bit. "I think we must not have hatched at the same time. I think..one of us came out first." he said, trying to decode his vision. He wasn't sure if he should tell her that he saw something. He wasn't sure how she would react, knowing he could delve into someone's cherished memories.

Weeping Mist met the buck's gaze when he looked into her eyes. Then his eyes glazed over. Mist wondered what he was thinking. Perhaps trying to remember the past like she'd done so many times before.

He shook his head and said they must not have hatched at the same time. She thought about it a moment and realized that it made sense. It would explain so many things.

"That would explain so much," she replied to the buck who mirrored her image. "For as long as I can remember, I've felt like I'd lost something. I had no idea, it was my twin that I'd lost."

She looked up at him with fondness. "It eases my heart to have finally found you."

Mourning Fog's heart warmed at her words. He was glad to feel whole again, and that she also was relieved. He was glad to see that she didn't mind, or didn't realize that he read her memories. Perhaps he could work on that skill, at the kimeti's consent. It could prove useful.

"So what have you been up to?" he asked curiously. They had their whole lives to catch up on, after all.

Weeping Mist laughed out loud. "I've spent most of my life searching. I just didn't know what it was that I was looking for." More seriously, she added, "Sometimes I thought I figured it out. Family.., adventure.., going back home.." She shook her head. "but then I would get the itch to go searching again."

Her thoughts returned to the buck she'd recently met and spent time with. A chance meeting, but again, not what she had been searching for. And now she carried reminders of that night within her.

Bringing her attention back to the present, she asked "And you?"

"Well, I..I have a family of mine own, sort of. I have a sac waiting for me at my den, and...a beautiful doe somewhere in this swamp. I never go a day without thinking of her. Is there someone like that for you? Even remotely close?" he chuckled, thinking of Life-Pulse. He let his mind wander for a moment, imagining a future with her. Would they have children? How many? He wondered what their names would be...what'd they'd look like. It was then that his eyes wandered to his twin's flank. In his mind he imagined sacs inside. He couldn't tell if he was just musing, or if what he visualized was reality...but there were five. Five pulsing sacs inside.

It was then that he realized his mind was showing him the future this time, instead of the past. Visually, Weeping Mist's belly swelled, and the colors of each foal began to show through the sacs. Most had the lavender shade of their mother, but some showed a bright yellow. He chuckled, "Who have you been with" he thought aloud. Flashes of visions, he caught a glimpse of his twin sister watching carefully over her brood. With such a loving gaze that only mothers shared. More flashes, but he's unable to make them out. The last one shows a doe walking up to her mother. He smiled..

"Five.." he whispered. "Most does only have around three. You're truly lucky, my dear sister. I'm sure that each will grow up to be just as beautiful as you. Matope has great things in store for them, I'm sure of it"

((I think i did it right but you know what it's past 1 in the morning to if i need to fix it that will be later haha))

Mist's eye grew wide. "How did you know?" Her eyes searched his face for an answer. "I mean... yes, I was with someone, but it turned out that he was destined for other places." She had hoped they would travel for a time together, but when morning came, they'd parted ways.

"Five?" she mumbled. Her eyes narrowed, trying to decipher his meaning. "Grow?" Did he know? Twins were rumored to have special connections, but how could he know that she carried result of her pairing with Soul Drift. She wondered, could he read her mind?

"I'm sorry" he said, his voice hushed. He felt a little guilty that he had Life-Pulse and she was alone. But he did see a doe come back to her, and it lifted his spirits, knowing that she would have companionship in the form of a daughter. He would have to come and see the two in the future.

He ignored the confused words as other voices clouded his mind. Voices that were calling. He had other things to attend to, such as the defenseless sac he left behind.

"The swamp calls me away, dear sister, but I will see you again someday soon. Know it." he smiled, nuzzling her gently goodbye.

Weeping Mist felt no sorrow for the buck she'd met and parted ways with. She knew their time together would be short. "No need to be sorry," she assured her twin. "It wasn't meant to be." Her voice trailed off as she noticed her brother's eyes get a faraway look in them.

His next words brought a touch a of sadness to her heart. It was time for the twins to part ways and continue on with their separate paths. Mourning Fog's reassurance that they would meet again eased the pain of parting. For the first time, she finally felt complete. She'd finally found what she had been searching for.
