There is a large and dark house, a mansion, far in the darkest street of a small town. Flourescent lights glow often at night and people who walk in to investigate always run away screaming. Scratching sounds or shrieks come from this particular house. The owner was only last seen about half a century ago, and nobody bothered to buy the mansion in fear of the rumor of his ghost. Once in a while, a candelabra would be seen floating through the streets and scaring people back into their houses to wait for it to go away. In a way, the townsfolk were ruled by the mystery of that house.

In the rain, on the foggiest of nights, a small boy had no choice but to stay in that terrible mansion, not knowing how to get home in the fog. He was cold, frightened, and most of all he was alone. Just as he knocks on the door, it opens and the room inside lights up. Drawn in by warmth, the boy, Sakurai Kochi, walks in as if somebody is welcoming him. He feels someone's hand on his shoulder, but nobody is there... save for a floating candelabra!

Shocked, he ran blindly deeper into the house, crashing into various objects in the dark and ripping through invisible hands that try to stop him. Eventually, he collapses, exhausted, and he sees a person appear where a floating candelabra was.

The Mausoleum

Candelabra Brand: Crazy_Tomboy313
Engraving: Sakurai Kochi
The ages: 15
In a relationship, I could have been: Uke
Haunting: I don't really believe in rumors and such like that, but I'm still scared of that house. Actually, I'm afraid of anything related to the dark. I'm a kind person, but I tend to be jumpy and I overreact before you know it.

My family had moved into this little town just for a quiet place. I never really liked the big city, either, but I wish I was back there. At least there weren't any haunted areas there. Now I have to deal with a floating candelabra in the streets. To make matters worse, I get lost in the rain and fog and I have to stay in that house! Could my life get any worse?

Candelabra Brand: Zelici DragonSquire
Engraving: Haku Miozia
The ages: 16
In a relationship, I could have been: Seke
Haunting: I am a strong willed and loyal person. Befriend me and I will do everything in my power to help you. I can be stern, but not unkind. I am a gentle person deep down once you get past my formal front.

I know I am dead. I am just waiting for my master to come home. I greet everyone who comes in warmly like my master once did. I keep everything ready for him. Sometimes I go out and search the town for him. I walk up and down the streets calling his name. The other servants who linger are worried as well. No one seems to be able to hear me however. I carry a candelabra around just like I did when I was alive. In my master's absence dark beings have invaded the house and torture the other servants. We can't do any thing. Because of my strong will they rarely come after me, though they do at times. The candelabra serves two purpose. To light my way as I search for my master, and to keep the dark beings at bay. I still tend to my duties even though the rooms are vacant.

People sometimes come into the house. They never stay long however. Every time I try and ask them if they have seen my master they run away screaming. It is a depressing repetition. I can't leave until my master returns. He told me to wait for him to come home.

I'm not sure how I died. Perhaps that too is part of the reason I am still here wandering. I don't know. Still since I am here I might as well obey my master's orders. I am sure he will come back. Perhaps he can tell me how I died and where he has been for so long? He will be back. Right?

Fear. That was what Sakurai was feeling right now as he stood on the doorstep of an incredibly old house. It was raining, so he couldn't stay outside, and it was foggy, so he couldn't go home. The only way to escape the rain would be to stay at this particular house, which had been the only one he could see in the fog. Unfortunately, it was the haunted house that everybody had been scared of.

"Don't ever go into the house," many people had said to him. "The cursed candelabra will burn you to ashes if you do." Has anyone ever really seen the person holding it? He heard that it only hung around the house or came out not very often. Maybe someone just likes holding the candelabra. That was what he tried to think of in hopes of chasing away his own growing fears.

Cautiously, he knocked on the door, expecting someone to answer or perhaps chase him away. Hopefully, the occupants of the house wouldn't be so cruel as to leave him out here. Even if the house was haunted, he feared death by cold more. If the house was only empty, then he wouldn't have to worry so much about the candelabra that everyone was afraid of.

Haku had been wandering around the house, searching, as usual. His candelabra was in his hand lighting his way. He sighed glad that the dark beings had finally retreated for now. He saw the terrified spirits of other servants wandering around. Master, please come home. It was a thought that came to him every time he saw the other house hold spirits.

He was going up the grand staircase when he heard a knock at the door. He turned toward the door. A guest! Immediately he turned the lights on in the entrance way and a fire lit itself in the sitting room in the next room. Then, candelabra in hand, he opened the door wide in welcome. As he opened the door he stood behind it like he did when he opened the door for his master. He was so hopeful it was his master. The Grand Entrance Hall was lit brightly in welcome.

"Welcome!" he says. If it was the master his greeting would be heard, but if it was not it would be like he hadn't spoken at all. A fire crackled merrily in the Grand Entrance Hall's great fire place. It warmed the hall and made the place even more welcoming and cheery.

With Haku's power the place still looked the same as it had fifty years ago even if the outside didn't. Some how he was able to preserve his master's home. He was glad of this, his master would be pleased when he finally returned.

The door had opened, but no voice could be heard and no one was behind the door. The entrance hall, or what looked like the entrance hall, was brightly lit as if it had been expecting someone. At first, Sakurai was a bit wary about going in, but his cold and shivering body was so overtaken by the warmth that reached him that he walked right in.

"Hello?" he called, hoping to hear a sound. "I'm sorry to walk in, but as you can see it's pouring outside." He heard no answer, and he didn't expect one. At that moment, he would have left if a strange presence hadn't been in the hall. Maybe the person who was here was angry at him for walking in?

If someone was angry, then what should he say in his defense? That someone had let him in by opening the door? The person might not believe him if he or she hadn't seen the door open. At the moment, it didn't matter. All he knew was that he was inside the haunted mansion that right now seemed more like a lively building set for an arrival of some sort. He began to wonder who it was that was expected here. He knew the expected guest wasn't himself, that was for sure.

Haku sighed, feeling disheartened. The one he had let in wasn't his master, just a very wet boy. He looked outside and saw it was indeed raining hard. Well, there was a guest. His master had always welcomed everyone into his home and expected his servants to do the same. He closed the door and the sound of the rain became muffled.

He walked towards the boy then and put a hand on his shoulder. Even though the boy obviously couldn't hear him like everyone else he still spoke to him.

"Come let's get you dried off, the sitting room is this way," he said, indicating the door to the sitting room which swung open in welcome as well. He stood there behind the boy, candelabra in hand and waited for him to go to the sitting room. He was obviously invisible to the boy, but hopefully the guest could feel his presence and the hand that rested on his shoulder.

Something was terribly off. There had been a small touch on his shoulder, almost as if a hand was put there. As a reaction, Sakurai turned his head to see whoever put a hand on his shoulder, and he was met with a horrible sight.

There was the candelabra floating right there in front of him, the flames mere inches away from a single strand of his hair. Instinctively, he backed away, very slowly. His eyes, which had been curious and worried before, now made him look and feel as if he had seen the Devil himself. There was no doubt that the candelabra he say was floating on its own, menacingly, yet somewhat sadly.

Before he knew it, he let out a scream and ran, but he somehow wasn't running toward the exit. Everything suddenly became dark and he wondered where he had run. He felt as if he had been running through people and he heard the crashing of many objects. He wondered if he had broken any priceless objects while trying to madly run from the candelabra.

After so many times running through hidden arms and hearing many high-pitched crashes, Sakurai tripped and was finally still. He breathed heavily to take in the oxygen that he needed to desperately store. No matter how much he wanted to get back up and run, he could only stay where he was and wait in terror for something to happen.

Haku saw the fear in the boy's eyes before he screamed and then bolted away. The ghost stood there sadly and waited for him to run for the door, but instead the terrified male ran deeper into the house. What was worse he ran straight into the dark part of the house that was where the dark beings resided when they were not tormenting him and the rest.

He issued orders for the boy to be stopped before he aroused the dark beings. Then he went after him. The other spirits tried valiently to stop the boy, but it was no use. He broke free from each one of them.

Then he heard the high-pitched crashes. The dark beings had been alerted of the boy's presence and were following after him. The boy finally stopped due to exahuastion and the dark beings gathered around him. Haku got in front of the boy and made the light of the candelabra shine brightly and encircle them both in it's light. He became solid and visible, which meant it was around 9:45 at night. It was at this time that his master had left so long ago.

It was also at this time that the spirits of the servants of this house, himself included, were at their strongest. They would all appear and have two hours and fifteen minutes of freedom from the dark beings, until midnight when the dark beings were back at full power once more. Then.....they would all fade back into invisiblity once more. Haku would be the last one to fade into that state again. He would remain solid until dawn.

All this time Haku had been commanding and shouting at the dark beings to get back. Now Sakurai could hear him. Finally the dark spirits left and Haku turned to the boy.

"Are you alright?" he asked. He offered his hand to the boy to help him up. "Welcome to the mansion. Shall we go to the sitting room now so you can get dry and warm?" he said. He spoke formally and politely.

There was a sudden glow of light and before Sakurai knew it there was a pattern of shouts. He wasn't sure if the owner of the voice was speaking to him or someone else, but he didn't bother to try to find out. It wasn't until the shouts stopped and the voice, much kinder now, spoke to him.

Sakurai looked up and saw someone he hadn't seen before. The person looked like a servant of the house, and he looked anything but dangerous. It didn't take long for Sakurai to find out that the person's hand was offered to him, and he took the hand to let the person help him stand.

His throat was still locked in fear, so he wasn't able to answer the man's question. If he could speak, he would probably say that he indeed would like to dry off. Unfortunately, it didn't seem like the tightness of his neck would loosen any time soon. It didn't bother him so much, but he wished it didn't seem like he was a rude fellow. Well, it depends on what the person thought of him.

Haku helped the boy up once he had taken his hand. He was a bit bothered at first when the boy didn't answer his question, but a look into the boy's eyes revealed fear. The boy must be too frightened to speak. I'll just have to take his silence as a yes. With that in mind he turned and started to walk back the way they had just come, the candelabra lighting the way.

He stopped and looked over his shoulder at Sakurai. "Follow me please. I'll take you to the sitting room," he said in his polite and formal way. That said he faced front and started walking again.

Once they had reached the sitting room there were already dry clothes and towels sitting on one of the cushy couches that faced the fire, which was crackling merrily. Haku escorted the boy to the couch and spread a dry towel across it before sitting him down upon it. Then he went over to the curtains and closed them.

"I'll leave so you can get changed. Put your wet clothes outside the door when you are ready," he said as he closed the curtains. Once they were closed he turned and walked out of the room.

"If you need anything just call. My name is Haku," he said. With that he stepped out of the room and closed the door.

Sakurai followed the person through the darkness of the hallway, his eyes somehow focused on the candelabra that his kind host was holding. It must have come from the same maker as the floating one, since it looked exactly the same. He would have asked the person about the floating candelabra if he hadn't been so scared of the encounter. He had to say that there were people who still lived in this house despite that candelabra.

It wasn't long before Sakurai found himself in what must be the sitting room. Amazingly, there were clothes and towels near a crackling fire, and he recalled a story that had some kind of similar scene to it. What was it called? He didn't remember, but it involved a beast of a castle and a merchant who came across it. The merchant in that story had also wanted to find shelter, but he wasn't exactly afraid of the castle that he had entered.

Sakurai nodded slightly, just to show that he understood, when the person spoke once more. Before the door closed, the kind host had mentioned his name. Haku... It was a very nice name, and the person who owned the name was so far a very nice person.

Once the door closed, Sakurai hesitantly shed his drenched clothes, used one of the towels to remove the rest of the rain water from his body, and put on the dry clothes. Some of the lingering rain dripped onto the floor, and he wished he could have gone home before the rain began. It just didn't seem right that he was borrowing someone else's clothes, even though Haku had given him the permission. He was merely a boy who got lost in the town he lived in. Sure, he had wanted shelter while he was outside, but now he was having second thoughts.
PostPosted: Fri May 07, 2010 2:39 pm

Once outside the room Haku didn't linger. He immediately went to the kitchen to get some food for the boy. When he entered the kitchen it was a bustle of activity. Though it was always busy in the kitchen it was even more so now. News, apparently, of the boy had spread fast among the servants of the house. Even faster than news spreads among the living. The spirits were eagerly hard at work. Though it wasn't their master, they were still eager to serve the guest. After all one had never stayed so long before. They were rushing around trying to get food ready for Sakurai before he got frightened and ran away with the others.

Haku smiled to himself with pride before addressing the room. "Relax everyone. I don't think he realizes we're ghosts. I'd like to keep it that way for as long as possible. It's been too long since we last had a guest stay this long. That said please refrain from doing anything that might scare the boy," he said. At the last part he looked at the kitchen boy who blushed a bit and looked away. The little boy was prone to playing tricks on people. "As you were," he said. The spirits went back to work. They too knew that they were dead and were waiting for their master's return like Haku.

Fifteen minutes later Haku was returning to the sitting room with a silver tray laden with a bowl of rich beef stew, a hot cup of tea, bread, and cheese. He knocked on the door twice so the boy knew he was coming in and entered.

He was pleased to see that the master's old clothes fit the boy so well. He set the tray with its burden of food on a side table by the couch that the towel was laying across. He set the candelabra beside the tray so his hands were free.

"I'm glad to see that the clothes fit. Enjoy your meal," he said. He went over to the curtains and opened them again. "What is your name? If you don't mind me asking," he said politely.

Sakurai hadn't had to stay very long in silence before another knock came along. Haku then appeared right after, carrying some sort of tray with food on it. Sakurai wondered how it all had been prepared so quickly, but he just figured that there were people in the mansion who had expected someone to come here to seek shelter. It seems as if everyone in this house was hospitable.

When Haku had asked the question, Sakurai knew he had to answer. Clearing his throat and trying to regain his ability to speak, he answered "Sakurai Kochi," though quite shakily. He wished his voice didn't sound so strange, but there wasn't much that he can do about it at all. Oh well. At least it doesn't seem like Haku would mind it so much.

A curious thought then entered Sakurai's mind. He couldn't shake off the feeling that something was odd about Haku, and the whole house as well. Why had he stayed despite the fact that the floating candelabra lived here as well? Many other people would abandon the mansion and vice versa. Nobody would even dare close their eyes in this place, unless they would like to see a flame floating in front of their very faces when they opened their eyes again.
PostPosted: Sat May 08, 2010 7:09 pm

Curtains opened once more, Haku turned to the boy once he said his name. He looked at him, studying him. Then he smiled a bit. Sakurai Kochi. The name sounded nice and suited the boy.

"Your name suits you, Kochi-san," he said. Haku, being the servant that he was, used Sakurai's last name and added an honorific to show respect to someone he had just met. It was what he was used to doing.

The tremble in Sakurai's voice didn't bother Haku. It was only natural that the boy be shaken. He felt a bit hurt though that the boy was afraid of his candelabra and not the dark beings, but never mind that. Haku's main focus was to make Sakurai's stay here tonight pleasnant. To that he was going to have to get the boy to relax. That and keep the dark beings away.

"If its the floating candelabra that you are afraid of don't worry. It won't hurt you. Take it from some one who knows," he said. He walked toward the boy and smiled a small smile. He picked the candelabra up and sat in an arm chair by the fire. He sat the candelabra down on a small table beside the chair and stared into the fire.

It was true. The candelabra wouldn't hurt Kochi-san. After all Haku was the candelabra ghost. He only wished he didn't have such a bad reputation. He hadn't hurt any one. All he had done was walk around, but the candelabra was the only thing that people saw move. Thus they were afraid of him. Oh well.

He looked away from the flames and to a grandfather clock that was against the right wall. It was ten o'clock. Two hours left before the dark beings had there strength back. Two hours left before he would have to protect Kochi-san. The boy would probably find out he was a ghost and run away.

"Please eat. You will feel better. May I ask what you were doing out so late in a storm?" he asked. The rain had picked up and a peal of thunder boomed suddenly. The lightning followed soon after. It was going to be a rough storm.

Sakurai's eyes widened a little when Haku mentioned the candelabra, but he didn't get the chance to ask about it since Haku had suddenly asked what he had been doing outside in this night. What was he supposed to say? He hardly remembered how he had got caught in a storm so late at night.

"I'm not exactly sure," Sakurai replied, a little embarrassed. "I only remember just being finished moving into the house and then I started to explore the town." He thought a little more, making sure there was nothing else to be said, before he continued. "Before I knew it, everything was dark and there was rain and I got lost in a fog. This house was the only house that I could go to for shelter. I'm very glad there's actually someone in this house who's kind enough to let me in."

After taking a deep breath, Sakurai began to speak again. "By the way, how is it that you can still live here with the candelabra?" he asked Haku. "Please don't think me rude, but I believe you're an amazing person. Everybody else is afraid of it, but you seem very calm about it." His curiosity was starting to get the best of him, but he shut himself up before he started to ramble about.
