As soon as her final lecture was over, Sophie grabbed her books and ran. Not for any dislike of the class- World Civilizations was relatively interesting, and far less draining at the end of the day than Economics or English Comp- but because she had somewhere else to be.
She did stop briefly at her dorm to drop off her textbooks and pick up her notes from her various sites. There were time records, writings about what was going on and how she was helping, flyers about upcoming events, and assessments from her supervisors, all put into color-coded folders. Sophie grabbed all the folders she could find and tossed them into a reusable shopping bag, black with green silhouettes of trees on the front. As an afterthought, she tossed a legal pad into the bag as well, then dashed out of the room.
Before too long, Sophie was leaning against a tree near the Southern entrance to the campus, feeling just a bit silly for having rushed so much. She clearly wasn't late. But was she early, or had something else happened? Maybe this was the wrong day. Or maybe, just maybe, she wasn't going to show up?

Olivia wasn't one to ever be late, but she was never one to be too early, either. She had taken her supplies with her to her classes. One small folder with a couple blurry snap-shots, quotes she had taken from what a couple workers at the shelter had said, and a couple pie charts. Mmm, pie. Maybe she would get a small pie after this. One of those cute little ones that had more crust than filling.
With an extra skip in her step, she made her way over to the meeting spot with Sophie. She dreading doing this report, as Olivia was never very good at writing formal papers. Everything was so much nicer with the words 'cute' and 'charming' attached to more serious ones.
With a smile and a wave, she trotted over to the tree, her pink-and-white shoulder bag a stark contract to SH's uniform. "Oh, am I actually late?" she worried for a moment, as it looked like Sophie had been there for a bit.

"I wasn't waiting too long." That was not a direct answer to the question, but since Sophie wasn't sure what the right answer was, she erred on the side of caution. If Olivia had been late, Sophie would have no problems saying so, but with so much uncertainty, it was best to let the matter drop. "The important thing is that we're both here now, right?"
Sophie shrugged her bag off her shoulder and arched her back, stiff from seven hours of classes. "And the other important thing is that class is over for today, right? Nothing against the teachers, I mean." While many of her classes were enjoyable, it was still tedious to sit through them and always nice to be on her own time for a change.
"Did you have any ideas for where we should work? I hear a new cafe just opened up on Fifth Street, but we can go to the usual too. I'm up for anything, really." As long as they had a barista and a table to work on.

SHe felt a surge of relief. She hated being late, even if it was inevitable once in a while. Sometimes classmates liked to linger around the door or in the hallways, and she was much too polite to tell them to move. Inching her way around didn't help, but that was the best Livy ever did.
"Not at all!" Livy laughed at her comment, "Class being over is always a nice thing." She adjusted her shoulder bag while Sophie stretched. She felt a little bit in a haze, most of it being from sitting through class and trying to jam information in her head. She certainly heard Sophie's next words lout and clear.
"Oooh, I would love to go!" she exclaimed, gripping the strap on her bag. "I'm always up for trying a new place." It seemed there were a lot of cafes in town, but who could blame them? With so many students, business was probably great. "Maybe they'll have some sweet to taste too. Or just a great cup of coffee sounds good enough to me. Ready to go now?"

Sophie laughed. "I don't know about always, but I definitely get your point. So now that we're off the clock, so to speak, let's get moving!" Her mother called her 'restless,' but Sophie preferred to think of herself as 'forward-thinking.' Why waste time standing still when they could be going places and doing things? Like going to a cafe and getting some work done (while enjoying coffee)?
"I could really go for something sweet myself," Sophie admitted. "Maybe they'll have chocolate croissants. Or custard tarts." Her mouth began to water just thinking about it. Pressing her lips together, she started off in the direction of the new cafe, going at a fairly brisk walking pace. "It should be just a few blocks this way."

The more Sophie talked about the sweet that were probably waiting for them, the more she felt herself get hungry. Ooooh, she was going to hate herself later for indulging herself so much, but it was hard to resist when it was right in front of you, and you were hanging out with someone.
She had daydreamed just a moment too long, and shuffled her feet to catch up with Sophie. Livy could appreciate the fast pace; it was a nice change from sitting in class. "Oh, that's great that it's so close to school."
She clung to her school bag, trying to get her mind working in the right mindset. They were here to work, and not play. At least, not only to play, she thought with a smile.

Even though it took Livy a few moments to catch up, Sophie didn't slow her pace. She was hungry, she was itching to move, and she knew that she wasn't going that fast. "I'm sure that was on purpose," she said as they kept walking. "I mean, what kind of eatery wouldn't want a school full of customers nearby, ready to descend on them every day after class? It's not as important with younger kids, but we pave our own way, and that's hungry work."
Though in Sophie's case, it wasn't entirely true. She was still supported by her parents- mostly her mother- while she devoted her time to school and her volunteer work. But it was only a matter of time before she would have to find some kind of job. The thought was not particularly cheerful. Sophie liked donating her time, and didn't want to have to cut back on that in order to do silly things like buy groceries and go places.
It was only a matter of time before they reached the cafe, a brightly decorated place with an outdoor seating area shaded by umbrellas, in addition the the indoor space. "Where do you want to sit?" she asked, holding the door open. "I'm fine with wherever you'd feel more comfortable." And if she wasn't, she would be for the sake of teamwork.

Livy laughed at Sophie's rhetorical question. "Especially students with money." More money than what those at Knightside would have, anyway. Hungry and caffeine-deprived students would easily flock to places like this. Hmm. It may be something to note if she ever needed to write about good business plans in any future classes. General education was so boring, but required.
"Um, how about we sit outside?" she asked, stepping into the cafe on light feet. She slid to the right, waiting for Sophie to slip in as well. Her eyes were dazzled by the menu, but she knew better than to spend too much time on it. They were here to work.
Then she saw the dessert case. Oh boy. "I might...have to observe these sweets for a moment," she said in a mesmerized tone.

"Outside works for me! But I think we need to order at the counter? Or... I'm not sure, actually." Sophie looked around for signs of waitstaff, but didn't see any. Which didn't mean that there weren't any. Wasn't it part of the job to stay out of sight unless they were needed? But they were needed to seat customers. Unless they weren't.
In the end, Livy made the decision by deciding to eye the desert case. Sophie shrugged and let the matter drop. Then she looked at the case herself, and any irritation she felt melted away. They had custard cream tarts. And cream eclairs. And coconut cream pie. And about a hundred other delicious looking desserts.
"I think," Sophie announced, "it would be most beneficial for our work environment if we fortified ourselves first. How about you?"

"Aaaah, there's just so much to pick from!" She felt her eyes glossing over with all the choices. "Well, we certainly can't focus if we're hungry!" She pondered over the choices a bit more, but decided to wait until after Sophie had decided. She got excited a little too easily, and needed to not be...overwhelming with so many sweets in front of her.
"I'll go snag one of the good outdoor tables with my bag while you order. I'll be right back!"
She quickly walked out of the store, clearly seen through the large glass windows claiming one of the shaded tables with her school bag. No second thought about anything being swiped came out of her brain. She hurried back in, feeling more ready for what dessert she'd consume in only minutes.
"I don't know if I can settle for just one," she said excitedly as she returned to Sophie.

"They do that on purpose," Sophie said with mock seriousness. "Clearly it's a ploy to get us to buy the whole case. We can't give in to their tricks... but I don't see why we can't get just one of them." She was still eying the eclairs, and the fruit tarts, and the chocolate mousse, and the black and white cake... "Or maybe that's a recipe for disaster," she amended, as Olivia went out to get a table. Somehow, the two of them would have to show some restraint.
By the time Olivia returned, Sophie had managed to narrow it down to the eclairs and the tarts, but was unable to decide between the two. If she bought two for herself, would she look greedy? But Olivia wasn't sure she could just have one either. Or was she just saying that to be polite? That was probably it. But if she suggested that they split a few, would that go over better? Or was that a trap that she was falling into?
Her indecisiveness and cynicism battled with her appetite. In the end, the treats simply looked too delicious to pass up. Sophie's stomach growled, and she shrugged sheepishly. "Maybe we could get a few, and share them, so we can both try more than one?"
