I've noticed a trend among the younger kids to talk about rape like it's something humorous or fun, like "would you rape ____" games and casually 'raping' other players in zomg chat (just saying 'I rape U' and stupid things)
What I don't understand is how this started and whythey do it. I've been raped and counseld others who have been raped and never once was it funny or humorous.
The statistics on sexual assault are pretty scary. Something like one in every three women will be raped at least once in their life, and you really can't tell the stats for men because so much goes unreported -fear, shame, discrimination; often more than female survivors face.
Are these kids just doing it because joking alieviates the fear or are they simply ignorant of what rape is?
I just don't understand .

I don't like when they joke about it either. And I'm not sure why they think it's funny but even in real life too they just shout out "RAPE!" when they are just messing around and this is not good because now if some one really needs help then others might think they are just jokeing. My guess would be they do not fully understand it and so they make it funny so they wont feel so uncomfterbul about it, but this is at the expence of the people hurt by it.

Thank you for posting. It's a sensitive subject an as much as people feel free to joke about it, they don't want to talk about it. I feel sorry for those people that play those "rape" games. Some day it will really touch their lives when it happens for real to a family member, a friend or themselves. I don't know a single person in real life whose life hasn't been effected by sexual assault.
In self-defense courses they teach people to scream "FIRE" not "RAPE" because "rape" won't get help, but fire spreads and people want to protect themselves. I find that sad commentary on humanity

I supose that the need for people to test the boundries of society plays into it, like those who dare others to desicrate holy ground or what have you. There seem to be people who can only find themsleves by doing something socialy unaceptable. Makes me worry about how far these people are willing to go, and where they'll go from here.

The sad thing is its not only kids who think that rape is a joke, but many adults think so too. This jerk at my work thinks that rape isn't real, its just women trying to get back at their ex's. One study found that people will react to a woman who yells "fire" but not "rape". I find it all tragic and it pisses me off at the same time.

what I don't get is that when someone yells something like "Rape" or "Help" no one reacts. Its sad because its almost as if they don't care. My teacher from the 4th grade told the class that if something bad was happening or about to happen to you, yell "FIRE!" as loud as you could. But then all the kids in the class (I mean the stupid ones) started yelling fire during recess and what not so now the people in that neighborhood couldn't even yell "FIRE!" when in distress. (Avoiding saying ~nya because it makes what I say seem less serious)
