I feel like such a threadmonger, making what is my third thread in this section. sweatdrop So I was reading those Dawn previews Hirano put in the back of the second and third volumes (and perhaps the first, but i dont have that one), and on p. 171, Walter (at least it looks like Walter- I can't be completely sure) tells Heinkel and Yumiko "The Vatican amazes me, though. To think that they'd send girls like you..." The page before shows a side shot in which Heinkel is smiling and its face has a distinctive feminine structure and a small earring. And I doubt any male working under the Vatican would wear an earring. Does this mean my previous assumptions of Heinkel are wrong and... it... is, in fact, female, or is there another reason nobody knows for sure? I feel that whether there are features of the chest present or not is really not gonna be a factor at all, since there are no such defining features on Integra when she's wearing her normal dress suit

Those bonus stories in the backs of Volumes 1, 2, and 3 are not "Dawn previews". They are a series of side-stories called "Crossfire".
Crossfire was originally written as an unrelated work before Hirano began Hellsing, making it technically another one of Hirano's "prototype" mangas. The major difference here, however, is that unlike the others it was actually printed within the pages of Hellsing itself.
The characters in Crossfire are, personality-wise, exactly the same as they are in Hellsing. The only major differences stem from the character designs. Anderson appears much younger than depicted in Hellsing, with dark hair and younger features. Maxwell is also radically different looking, with a very feminine look and glasses, which Hirano later said he had to change because this version of Maxwell "looks too much like Integra". Heinkel and Yumie, however, look exactly as they would later appear in Hellsing, albeit with one very apparent exception: in Crossfire, Heinkel has rather large breasts, while in Hellsing she is as flat as a board.
This has raised many questions among fans as to whether Hirano had decided to change Heinkel to a man in Hellsing, or whether she simply binds her breasts in battle. Hirano has never given a concrete answer for this, and has kept Heinkel's true gender ambiguous whenever asked, saying on at least one occasion that she is "neither male nor female". The OVA didn't alleviate the matter when Heinkel made her appearance there, depicting her exactly as she appears in Hellsing and giving her a female voice actress capable of deepening her voice convincingly to a male octave. It's unlikely these questions will ever be answered.
The bottom line is, the events of Crossfire are non-canon, meaning they do not take place in the Hellsing universe, and the characters are completely different.

...No idea why I thought it had anything to do with The Dawn. U_U Perhaps it had to do with the fact that I had a rather high fever at that point. I shall go spank myself. Thats definitely confusing to have them similar only personality-wise (to me, anyway). Thanks.

Its even more confusing with it moving and talking. honestly. but the thing is, its just a skit. the person who plays it is a woman.
