Short, stout and to the point, Rikitiki Tavi was always on the look out. She was at this exact moment having a rare quiet time when she didn't have any young lions to look out for and her lioness friend didn't need her. These wonderful rare quiet times meant she could enjoy the lands she had made her home in. She classed herself as the protector of the lioness, her mate and their cubs, she had always been no nonsense, straightforwards, straight laced, all of these things described the ratel but she was also bossy. She always demanded her word was taken as her bond and though she was smaller than a lion, most knew she meant business and obeyed her. She loved her lion family but it was nice to take a break.

Waddling to the watering hole she dips her head to take a drink glancing up briefly to check that no one was watching her she dips her fore paws on to the water with a sigh. Her paws needed a soak, chasing after lion cubs all day was hard work. Soon enough they wouldn't need to be chased but that was at least a short time away, right now it was easiest just to think about relaxing, enjoying the sun on her back and the water on her achey paws. It was a beautiful day just to be alone for a while.

It'd been a nice, productive day. He woke up early enough, found breakfast, had breakfast, then started walking and hadn't stopped for too long since. The old-timer, while getting on with age, was still as active as he'd been in his younger years. He'd gone quite a ways already, as it was almost noon-ish and he started along again just a few hours after sunrise, and he had, quite frankly, gotten completely and utterly lost.

Now, as he was too stubborn to admit it, around mid-morning he simply ignored the obvious and kept on walking. Those he'd encountered along the way who'd been nice enough to start a conversation he managed to scare away with the only two things he believes he needs in the world: his voice, which served him well because it was unnecessarily loud and somewhat raspy and it annoyed many a wanderer, and his grumpy, not-easily-pleased-or-impressed personality that tended to do away with strangers if his voice just didn't cut it. Still, despite his very unpleasant manner, the ratel was currently, and surprisingly, smiling.

Now, it was hot, dry, and quite bothersome to one with annoyingly thick fur such as Liu, and it was only normal that, upon seeing an opportunity to rest, he approach it as swiftly as he could. Much to his dismay, however, there was another that reached his would-be oasis before he did, and that alone was enough to wipe the grin off his face. With furrowed brows and a thoroughly displeased expression, the old ratel hurried to the opposite side of the watering hole, quite obviously fuming.

"And what do you think you're doing!?" demanded Liu. If it were physically possible, steam would currently have been coming out of his ears. "I saw this watering hole first, you! And now look what you've gone and done! Dipped your dirty paws in it. How do you suppose I drink from it now!?!?!?"

He was not pleased. Not pleased at all.

The soft brown Ratel lifts her head to the voice f the new comer, her soft green eyes curiously looking over the male. She laughs a quick sharp little 'HA' before taking her paws from the water and waddling up behind him.

"Who do you think you're talking to?" She snips nudging his butt with her nose. "hey, don't turn your back on me. This is the watering hole I come to every day, you're clearly just some visiting rogue, show some respect to the locals." She snorts sitting dow on her rump and glaring at the grumpy male. She wasn't about to let him get away with bad mouthing her.

"And I'll have you know my feet are perfectly awesome and you should feel blessed to drink from the same water they have been in."

The aged ratel narrowed his eyes at the other, knowing what she said was true. At least about the part about him being a wandering rogue. The other part...not so much. Still, as it was true enough and there really was no arguing her point, the old grump took a seat a good distance away (though he was still within range of having a conversation). Liu wasn't about to admit defeat, but he stuck his nose up in the air and chose, instead, to not comment on the matter.

"No such thing as 'awesome' feet, good for nothing.." and the rest of what he said disappeared into the passing breeze. His green, fading eyes looked over the brown and gray ratel just a few feet away from him, and they came to a realization that it had been a good long time since he last ran into another ratel.

Not that he was one to care for such things, but it was interesting that he'd encountered one today of all days. Was it a sign that something good was about to happen? ... He snorted and dismissed the idea, deciding that since he couldn't (or wouldn't, out of pride) have a drink of cool, refreshing water that, if anything, running into her was a sign that meant that something else was supposed to happen. Whether it was bad (since he didn't consider 'good' as an option at this point) he didn't know, but quite frankly he didn't really care either.

"If you live here," he called over to her, eyes still narrowed and occasionally glancing at the watering hole. Oh, it was so tempting...but no! He couldn't let her win. It was just a drink of water...he'd be fine. "Is there, by any chance, a watering hole that you haven't dipped your grubby paws in anywhere nearby?"

Grunting the female ratel pulled herself from the water, her belly wet due to her low centre of gravity. "Even if there were, why would I tell you? Call me a good for nothing?" Waddling up to him she flicks her wet paws at him splattering him with the cool waters of the watering hole.

"Just drink from this one, theres nothing wrong with it, you should be grateful I don't just call my lion friend and have her kick your butt right back out the door it came in through!" She snorts and sits directly beside him, close enough to touch him if she wanted to.

"Go on, have a drink, I'll even close my eyes if you want me to!" She closes her eyes tight "You can pretend you didn't even take a drink from such tainted waters, I'd never know." She huffs, she had never dealt with anyone so stubborn as this old male. She wanted to just clout him in to the water, but deep down, she was a nice person even if she was rather angry on the outside.

He blinked as she splattered drops of water onto his face, rubbing at the now slightly damp spots with a paw as he glared at her. "I'd really rather not," he huffed stubbornly, his gaze moving between the female and the watering hole. He was rather thirsty, he had to admit, and honestly after taking a drink he wanted to lie down and rest his already aching paws. So, when she seemed to insist he narrowed his eyes suspiciously and waddled closer to the edge of the water, eying it closely.

"You better not push me in," he said with a grunt, then quickly lowered his head and drank his fill. The liquid was cool and refreshing, and once he finished he plopped down right where he stood and lowered his head. "Hmph. I guess it wasn't terrible," he muttered. "Thank you."

He really couldn't remember the last time he'd thanked anyone for anything, so the words were almost foreign to him. He was scowling still, but it's not that he wasn't happy to have gotten a drink, mind you. It's just that smiling was as strange to him as the winged lion he once scouted from behind a bush one day. Blue, he was, and he could tell it was a 'he' because of the full mane he had, with a frigid aura that the old ratel couldn't quite place.

"So," he finally said after having stared at the other for a bit, unsure how to continue after saying his thanks. "Don't suppose you could tell me where I am uhm.. have you got a name?"
