Devi walked at a slower pace than usual that afternoon. She was still a bit shaken up from the nightmare she had the night before. She had been accustomed to getting nightmares every now and again, but lately they had been getting worse, and last night's felt more frightening and real than ever before.

But she knew just what to do to cheer herself up. To get the terrible nightmares off her mind, she rented the film A Nightmare on Elm Street to view with her longtime friend, Ume McDougall. There were something about horror and slasher films that always made Devi laugh - she couldn't quite place a finger on it. It wasn't that she found the idea of being brutally murdered funny, but she knew it was fake so she felt no shame laughing her a** off as promiscuous teenagers get their throats slit.

Devi arrived at Ume's home at precisely 5:00pm and knocked firmly on the front door three times. As she waited for the door to be answered, she brushed off some dirt on her sneakers, and stomped out whatever dirt may be stuck on the underside. She didn't want to be tracking dirt through her friend's home, after all.

The door almost flew open, Ume's normal exuberance only slightly dimmed by her own evident lack of sleep. She stood as ever like she'd have looked more proper dressed in some Victorian Era gown and teaching children their alphabet.
Apparently she'd been working on a sewing project too because there was string around one wrist and lace draped over one shoulder.

"Perfect timing as ever!" She said and flashed an unguarded smile and moved aside to let you enter. "Goodness I have SO been looking forward to this, I could use a laugh. Would you like something to drink or would you prefer to wait?"

"A glass of water would be great," Devi said with the tiniest gesture of a nod. She normally passed up offers for a drink, finding them to be senseless bit of small talk that is only done because it is part of a ritual of welcoming someone into your home. But on that day, Devi felt it a glass of water would be too refreshing to pass up.

"I've been looking forward to this as well," she said, without any expressed enthusiasm to support that statement. That didn't mean it wasn't the truth. She pulled out the DVD from her backpack, showing the title to Ume. They had seen it together before, but its still a classic comedy. "I am very excited to see Johnny Depp die."

Ume vanished for a moment and returned with a glass of water and ice and set it on a coaster on the coffee table that stood between the couch and the television.
She laughed at the eagerness to see Johnny Depp die and gave a small approving nod. "I would be more gleeful only if it were Brad Pitt." She admitted with a wicked glint in her eyes.

"We should do a marathon of these for summer vacation perhaps?" She offered "We could alternate between well executed horror and laughable ones like this."

"Is there a well executed horror movie?" Devi questioned. Devi had made a joke. She was proud. She almost smiled. Almost. "We absolutely should do a marathon of films though. We can watch the list of the AFI's 100 Years...100 Thrills. Not all of them are horror, but they are excellent movies."

Devi had seen most of the movies on several of AFI's Top 100 lists for all the different genres, including the 100 Thrills list. However, none of these movies managed to truly frighten or thrill her, but they certainly provided endless hours of entertainment.

She sat down on the couch and took the glass of water, placing the DVD on the counter for Ume. As a guest, she felt it would be rude to start tampering with the DVD player to get the movie set up, even if she had watched many movies on this very television before.

"Well...not for -horror- perhaps" She mused "I don't trust the top 100 list any more than you do, but I -do- enjoy some of the more psychological thrillers that aren't -just- out to shock with the standard display of fake blood and clipped hamstrings to leave someone flopping around and helpless."

She waved her hand with an eyeroll thinking about one of the more recent movies she had watched.

"You may start it if you like?" She offered and fetched a plate of trisciuts and cheese to set between them.

Devi nodded and set up the DVD to play, and already began to snicker at the cheesy opening credits. While this is certainly an easy film for her to laugh at, she did give it respect as a great film. But horrifying? Not at all. Devi grabbed a triscuit and put a thin slice of cheese on top, creating a nice balance of a triscuit to cheese ratio as the two girls watched the opening twenty minutes of the film. Devi watched with intrigue as Tina's limp bleeding body gets thrashed about the room before her boyfriend's eyes.

"Silly girl. Doesn't she know not to have sex if she's in a slasher movie? For that stupidity, she deserves a violent death like that," she said. "The sexy girls are always the first to go."

"As soon as the panties come down... that's the -real- tramp stamp" She mused "It's like running upstairs, or hiding in those closets with the wooden slat doors that never stop ANYTHING."
She picked up a cracker and carefully arranged the cheese on it before taking a small bite.

"... no one's ever very creative in these either, its all maximum shock value. Sometimes -sort- of creative but always more for appalling, It would be so nice if they made a film where the killer made SOME effort not to be caught rather than just trying to kill off as many people as fast as possible."

"Its hard for the police to track down someone who only exists in dreams," Devi said, making another cracker and cheese. It took her a while, she didn't like the corners of the cheese to fall off the edges the cracker, so she had to play with the shape of the cheese some. "Maybe that's what's going on in town lately. Destiny City has its very own Freddy Krueger."

She stated that more bravely than she meant it. In films, slasher action is all good and fun, but the idea of it approaching reality was a bit frightening for her.

"Hey Ume...have you had any nightmares?" Devi asked. She didn't want to mention that she had one the night before. She already wrote about it in her diary, and she didn't want to go through having to tell the story a second time. That would totally be repeating herself.

Ume glanced sharply and her and then nodded almost reluctant.
"More and more lately... it started as strange dreams but... now it's all just... nightmares." She admitted and quietly rubbed at her arm.

She knew something of what was happening in the City these days, but she could hardly tell poor Devi, she didn't even dare tell her family that she was one of the 'terrorists' running about in a mini skirt, or why people were falling into comas.

to be honest she'd thought that the nightmares might just have been, stress...

"I died last night," Devi confessed. She felt she should tell somebody. The dream felt so incredibly real she felt that it would be only healthy to tell someone. "I had my autopsy. But I was awake. They took out my organs." She described it all pretty flatly, but her hands were trembling a little bit thinking about it all. She turned back to the movie, just as Nancy rushes into her friend's room to see the blood all over the floor and walls. "Now who is going to clean up that mess?"
PostPosted: Tue May 04, 2010 9:47 pm

Ume didn't think at that point that telling her own nightmares would make Devi's the least bit better... so she instead brushed a cautious hand against her shoulder seeking to comfort her.

"Blood stains -are- rather hard to get out, It's going to be awful for the resale value too if they don't get it out of the cracks in the floor."

She said trying to lighten the mood again.

"Not to mention how they'll have to explain why the past family moved out," Devi said. Hey, look, a tiny fleeting smile. Oh wait, no, its gone. Sometimes Devi watched these slasher movies she's already seen in fast forward, only hitting play for the hilarious death scenes, but this movie had so many hilarious scenes throughout it. The two girls continued watching as Rod is hanged in his jail cell, all the way until Glen is sucked into his bed and erupts into a pool of blood. Devi clapped her hands as Johnny Depp's character died. "Bye, bye, Johnny Depp! That's certainly one way to die. One second you're in bed, the next you're nothing but a puddle dripping from the ceiling."
PostPosted: Tue May 04, 2010 10:30 pm

"Can you just imagine trying to explain -that- to a cleaning service? 'No I swear it didn't come from the attic, its just this room! No I don't know how it happened, well except for the man in the ugly sweater who comes while your sleeping!"

She made exaggerated gestures. "What their not saying is that someone was probably inspired by one of those -creepy- magic finger mattresses"

"I remember having to sleep in a motel that had beds with magic fingers when I went to visit my grandparents with my family," she started. "I didn't sleep at all that night, the sheets felt like they hadn't been cleaned in weeks and...lets just say the walls were very thin and the couple in the room next to our room were very loud."

She took the last remaining piece of cheese and put it on another triscuit. "Here's a fun question," she started. 'Fun' is such a subjective term. "If you were going to die in a slasher film, how would you want to die? I think I'd want to be thrown into a wood chipper, have little pieces of me dumped into a playground."
