Okay, so sometime before next august (band camp, woo!) my braces should come off. I am a very proficient trumpet player, clean range/tone, and I've worked very hard. Now im scared when the braces come off, all that work will have gone to waste..........Any input........Oh yeah should I keep working hard right now? OR is it not worth it.........

I don't play Trumpet, but I do play clarinet... When I had braces, I played good, when I got them off, I still played good. Nothing really changes.

Do you remember how long the recovery period was?

Getting the BRACES off didn't hurt my flute playing too badly (although I wasn't too great to begin with anyway a few years ago <<; ), but the bite plate mid-way through getting my braces off did damage. It blocked from the back of my front teeth all the way to the middle of the roof of my mouth. It took a couple of weeks to get used to it.
At least you'll have some of the summer to readjust! :]

I didn't have much of a problem with my playing at the beginning, but apparently it stretches your lips?

Now, I don't play any brass instruments (nor have I gotten my braces off...D= ), but from everyone I've talked to, playing after getting them off feels so much easier. There will be a time of adjustment, but I'd think it would be a couple weeks, at most. Our first chair trumpet player had braces for years, and while I didn't hear her when she first got them off, she definitely sounds really good now.

The_atomic_tangerine I didn't have much of a problem with my playing at the beginning, but apparently it stretches your lips? sounds pretty logical, but when I played trumpet I wasnt very good, and my playing ability didnt really change before and after I got my braces off. Theres the period where you have to adjust to how it feels to play with them off but like 290Pika said, you'll have time to adjust smile

i'm a clarinet player and i had braces. not just top ones, but bottom ones as well. when i got them, and when they were tightened i had to get used to them. once i got used to them i barely noticed them. when i got them off, i had to get use to not having them on anymore. it's going to feel weird, but in a good way. as for playing there's not much of a difference.
