This is how the world ends: Blood, balm to the howl of neurons.
PostPosted: Sun May 02, 2010 8:50 pm

User ImageName: Paul Vincent Wyndham

Nicknames: He doesn't particularly have any, and the only one he really accepts is "Wyndham".

Age: 18

Birthday: 7 December

Sign: Sagittarius

Gemstone: Tourmaline

Blood Type: AB+

Fav. Food: Salads, of all kinds but especially with ginger dressing; cucumbers; tuna salad wraps. He likes cold foods.

Hated Food: He does not like scallions, nor does he like curry. Nor does he like carrots, and he will pick them out of his salads if he must.

School: SHP

Hobbies:
Piano-- Paul is a pianist. He loves the piano, and has since his mother stuck him on lessons when he was eight. Every year, he helped out his school with the musical; he also played in the school orchestra from middle school on up. While he doesn't compose his own works, he likes to download music from the internet that appeals. He has the entire piano score of Atonement memorized. His favorite music to play is more modern than classical; Mozart and Chopin hold no fascination for him. He'd sooner spend his time trying to figure out how to play Vanessa Carlton songs than practicing Chopsticks.

Tai Chi-- This is a hobby he picked up when he was young, after watching his father meditate most mornings. He believes it keeps him centered, focused, and able to handle whatever comes along; what it actually does is gives him an hour or two every day where he can sort out his thoughts on most everything. If he's disturbed, or doesn't get to do his hour of meditation, he is very unhappy and will likely be off-balance (and very unhappy with the person who interrupted him!) for the rest of the day. He feels he absolutely needs this time to function, and it creates a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy; he thinks he'll be off-balance and unhappy if he misses tai chi, so he is.

Journal-keeping/Scrapbooking-- Journal-keeping, a hobby that Paul adores. Adores, adores, adores: he almost has a compulsion to keep records of what he's been doing. At home there are cardboard boxes full of journals and journals and journals and journals. He glues in pictures, interesting leaves he finds, just about everything he can keep to have perfect memories of everything that happens. He's pretty good at this, and in fact keeps three books ongoing at a time--one for secrets, one for class notes, and one for public consumption.

Virtues:
Considerate-- If something bothers you, Paul drops it. It doesn't matter what it is he's doing or talking about that bothers you, he will stop talking about it or doing it as long as he's around you. Does his stance on healthcare offend you? He will never bring it up again. This trait also leads to a very polite, well-spoken young man, who is quite pleased to hold open doors and pull out chairs for all of his acquaintances, not just the girls. He tries his best to help without making it seem like he thinks you're incompetent, thinking quite seriously about how to allow you to save face. Uncomfortable subjects are to be broached in whispers, privately, or not at all. Unfortunately, sometimes this goes too far, and he won't discuss something that really bothers him because he's worried he will offend.

Pensive-- Paul thinks about things. He thinks about them a lot. He mulls them over, writes down his thoughts in his journal, takes a break to write in a different journal or play some piano, and then he goes back and thinks about things some more. Eventually, he might even draw a conclusion. Or, if you draw a conclusion first, he will take this conclusion and turn that over a few times in his head too. And once one issue is resolved, he will think about something else. This means that he makes good decisions, usually; he gets all the information, thinks about the pros and cons, and then he decides. It's not the fastest way to go about things, and can really mess up his long-term decision making, but he usually manages to think up a good solution to most every problem, given enough time.

Humble-- Paul is a great follower. And this is because he knows exactly what he did right and exactly what he did wrong, and he will do his best to repair that for next time. He knows this sort of thing because he is pensive, and tends to review his actions over and over and over. In addition, this means in a team situation he doesn't try to countermand orders; he follows them, helping out with the other members where he can.

Flaws:
Quiet-- and how. He doesn't talk when he's stressed. He doesn't talk when he's afraid. His thoughts are his own, and sometimes--a lot of the time--okay pretty much all the time--he'll tell you about his surface thoughts but not what he's really thinking. He might be considering tacos superficially, but he might truly be thinking about how he dropped his laptop in a puddle and now he's ******** for that huge presentation tomorrow. And it's really, really hard to tell when he's considering how bad he is gonna hate himself tomorrow, precisely because he spends so much time being pensive and mulling things over.

Pensive-- As long as he has time, he'll make a good decision. But what about when he doesn't have time? What about when he has to make a lot of decisions in a very short about of time? Paul tends to panic and make the absolute worst choice, the kind of choice that comes from his heart rather than his head, if he can manage to make a choice at all. This isn't saying if you've planned to go out to lunch at a certain restaurant and you change your mind, he'll freak, because he won't. If you hand him three college applications, the deadline's next week, and he can only apply to one, he will agonize over the decision until the day before the deadline where he'll pick the cheapest one or the one with the highest acceptance rate and send it in, only to remember that his transcript isn't with it and he's ******** anyway.

In battle, this can really suck. As long as things are going to plan, he is a perfect clockwork soldier, he'll do exactly what he's supposed to do. But if something goes wrong, if there's an element unaccounted for, he goes straight for the objective and then gets straight out.

Resentful-- Paul has gone his entire life being told what to do, and he's done what he's been told, and he's done it with a smile. He's studying to be a doctor because his parents wanted him to. He plays piano because his parents wanted him to. He is at Sovereign Heights because his parents wanted him to be at Sovereign Heights, and you know what? He doesn't see how his life is ever going to improve from answering orders to jump with 'how high?' Sure, he's still just a cog in the machine with the Negaverse, but ripping starseeds out of people's chests makes him feel good. It's something he decides to do, and he does it when he wants to do it. He picks his victims. He doesn't kill for the control over others, but for the feeling of control over himself.

He's not crazy; he's not sociopathic or psychopathic. He just relishes his chance to do something just because he wants to.

Defeatist-- He approaches most everything thinking he is going to fail. While not every plan you make will be met with his particular passive-aggressive way of pointing out that it's not a good idea (he'll tell a story about a plan that is similar but not quite the same and how horribly it failed), the ones he has time to think about especially get targeted by a lot of sighs. He can even get downright nasty sarcastic, with a "Oh yeah, like no one has ever tried that before" or a "I think I saw that on a Saturday morning cartoon show". Sure, he'll still do exactly what you say and not modify it, but when the plans fall through he knew they would, the whole time, you heard him say that he knew they were going to fail.

Physical Description:

Fashion: T-shirts and jeans, mostly, he's not the creative sort.

CORRUPTED MECHANICS
I really prefer the profile up there, but this is sort of clarifying how things work since he's, like, corrupted.

Considerate
He's not a senshi who runs out there and rips out some starseeds, yo. His consideration, as a senshi, manifests itself sometimes as trying to hide the fact that he's about to rip out your starseed; he's been known to help someone just to get close enough to do the deed. He wants you to feel at ease while he murders you, because he sure does. In fact, there's this weird little feeling in the back of his head that tells him everyone's better off dead, and he's just being considerate of their needs, if not their wishes, when he kills them. (He does apologize after; his mama raised him right.)

In part, he is considerate because he knows what he's doing is wrong. You're not supposed to rip out other peoples' souls, after all, that is beyond rude. He thinks, though, that being nice to you in your last moments absolves him of most guilt. After all, none of his companions would have been so nice as to help you put away your groceries.

Pensive
He plans. Everything. Spinel is corrupted; he isn't insane, he's not sick in the head. He thinks over everything that might go wrong when he plans to steal your starseed and decides if it's worth it. He thinks this s**t through. It's not to say he's a chessmaster; he's far from it, he only makes plans dealing with 'getting in for starseed' and 'getting out with starseed'. You can throw him for a loop, just not if you react like the rest of the world. You know, screaming and dying.

User ImageCORRUPTED SENSHI: Spinel, Corrupted Senshi of Bells
Because Spinel was corrupted straight into the Negaverse, his senshi name is unknown. But his sphere is pretty goddamn obvious don't you think

Challenge: You'll die. My apologies.

REASONING BEHIND ATTACKS:
The Walker/The Binder: Bells were used to warn of invading enemies, so the town could be prepared for siege.

The Banisher: Bells were used to ward off evil spirits; since Paul is corrupted, it's reversed, and he invites evil spirits in, thus weakening 'good' senshi or Cavaliers in his area. (Good is defined as: are you corrupted? no? then you're good.)

Attack #1: The Binder
Description-- Spinel takes the sixth of his bells and rings it three times.
Effects-- Anyone in a ten-foot radius of Spinel experiences a harsh knockback, bodily throwing them out of the "bubble". For ten seconds after the bell is rung, no one can get within ten feet of Spinel, but Spinel also can't move or the 'spell' will be broken.
Range-- Ten feet to each side.
Target-- Area effect
Duration-- Instant

Attack #1b: The Walker
Description-- Spinel takes the third of his bells and rings it twice.
Effects-- Opponents in a ten-foot radius experience a harsh knockback, bodily throwing them out of his space. For thirty seconds after the bell is rung, no enemy can get within ten feet of Spinel; now, too, he is able to move, and the "space" moves with him.
Range-- Ten foot radius from Spinel
Target-- Area
Duration-- Instant

Attack #2: The Banisher
Description-- Spinel takes the seventh and largest of his bells and rings it once. A ring around him pulses with black light--think of the Sanctuary effect in Ragnarok, make it black and awesome and there you are.
Effects-- All magical attacks used by uncorrupted powered beings lose half their effectiveness. For instance, say Super Sailor Bicycle's second attack summons two bicycles. While inside Spinel's sphere of influence, she will only summon one bicycle. Time limits are cut in half, numbers of projectiles summoned are the same. Cavalier weapon effects are also halved in effectiveness, mostly in the speed with which they set in.
If Spinel is ever cleansed, this attack will instead remove all weapon effects from Negaverse weaponry, and halve the magical abilities of any magic-using opponents.
Range-- Within fifteen feet of Spinel
Target-- Area effect
Duration-- Instant; one minute after attack begins.

Why Negaverse?
Dear Roma,
What was Charonite thinking when he recruited Paul?
Love,
Anonymous Imaginary Crit

Dear Imaginary Crit,
Look at the Negaverse. Look at Paul. Look back at the Negaverse. Back at Paul. Paul is very calm, level-headed, and he's a team player. Doesn't steal the spotlight, respects his leader most times, doesn't have a problem with redoing things or being told what he's doing wrong. He follows his orders to the letter. And beyond that, he has training in a martial art: Admittedly, that martial art is Tai Chi, which is not so much SUPER COMBAT FUN TIME as being swift like the coursing river and just avoiding getting hit. Paul would be a very good asset to any team. It just so happens that it probably should have been a senshi team, and now it is a Negaverse team.
Love,
Roma

Dear Roma,
So do you ever plan to get Spinel cleansed? What's his senshi name?
Love,
Imaginary Crit

Dear Imaginary Crit,
Spinel is going to be corrupted until he dies, because removing weapon effects is lame. neutral His senshi name would probably be Orestes, though. Like I said, he'll never be cleansed, so it doesn't much matter!
Love,
Roma

Could I get this added as a flaw somehow? Maybe Resentful or something like that? It seems like this is a pretty big part of who he is and why he would get recruited, so I think it should be in the main personality write-up, not just supplementary.

Plus, he could use a flaw that's not so nice. The three you have are still "aww, he's so nice / poor baby" sort of flaws. Which work for him and they suit nicely, but let's see a not-quite-so-nice/accepting fraction of him, please?

Other than that, I adore him to death <3

Just dropped by to say I'm ******** loving the Abhorsen theme here, and I really like his attacks (and I suggest you go with "You'll die. My apologies" or something similar because awesome).

I'm a little leery on 'Self-Deprecating' as a flaw because it's the kind of flaw that harms the character more than it harms other people, and doesn't necessarily really disadvantage him -- I'd suggest something that flows better out of his virtues so he seems like the same person, just with upsides and downsides to his character traits? Like, you say he's pensive -- why not carry that all the way through to note that he's not a quick-draw fast-solution kind of person, he's someone who has to be able to think about things beforehand to execute them? Precision over speed, sort of; the difference between being a sniper (which is more Paul's personality it looks like?) and a gunfighter.

Otherwise, I love him -- I'll be especially glad to see an effective and sense-making person like him in the Negaverse. If you're interested in any character backstory-making hit me up, because I'd love to make some connections! P.S. I agree, Paul, scallions are the devil. I hope he learns to play Jon Schmidt's Love Story/Viva La Vida arrangement.
PostPosted: Mon May 03, 2010 9:31 pm

He has seven bells. Was there any other way to take it? biggrin

I definitely see what you mean, and replaced self-deprecating with pensive; really, that sort of fits under 'defeatist', anyway. So it works out better to combine them. (As for sniper: Emotions are for homicidal maniacs! Professionals have standards. Be polite; be efficient; have a plan to kill everyone you meet.)

Paul is flattered you think he is effective and sense-making. And I'll drop you a line, I'm definitely interested. heart

(But Paul doesn't like Taylor Swift*

*he is a liar)

Just a few things.

First a small comment:

....As long as things are going to plan, he is a perfect as clockwork soldier...

This part reads a tad weird.

Perhaps consider changing it to:

...he is perfect as a clockwork soldier...

or

..he is a perfect clockwork soldier...

Just for an easier flow? Unless that's actually how it's suppose to be worded? (I occasionally suck at grammar. ^^; So sorry if this is how it's suppose to be.)

----

And a small thing on Defeatist:

Actually at the moment I can't /quite/ put my finger on what it needs. But it feels like there might be a small lack of something here to define it as a defeatist.. like it really doesn't sound that great as a flaw name and how you've described it. *edit* and when I say "great", I mean it just kind of lacks that 'umph' your other traits have for some reason. */edit*

However, I can say it sounds like he's more of an Enabler, which might be a better word for this flaw? Enablers allow things to happen and make no effort to change it, along with the nasty comments and the stories of how much they think they know the outcome. They're not actively trying to change things, they're just trying to get from point A to point B despite what's going to happen, even if they KNOW it's coming. I also think it might go along better with what you have for flaws and virtues, just in the way of how it sounds.

----

Also I really love how you took his attacks and had him use different bells.

I hope I helped some. ^^;

Fixed that grammar error, whoops! My cursor slips sometimes and before you know it I have half the sentence in the wrong place neutral

as for defeatist, Merriam-Webster defines it as "a person who expects or is excessively prepared for failure" which is pretty much the point of that trait. I suppose his trait could be better defined as pessimistic, but that's not quite right as he believes a lot of things can and do go right. It's just that he is always worried about failing, so he is always prepared for failing. He can sometimes undercut himself because of this.

I could always term it "fatalist". Hmm. I'll think about it--thanks, LP!

your letter to a imaginary crit-giver made me wonder

is paul on a horse? does he use old spice instead of lady scented body wash?

does he have two tickets to that thing I like? biggrin
PostPosted: Tue May 04, 2010 12:38 am

He's on a boat, actually.

He is a man, so he likes to smell like a man, but sometimes he likes to smell like a different-smelling man and that's why he uses Old Spice instead of lady-scented bodywash.

The tickets, unfortunately, are now diamonds.

Yes. It also, unfortunately, usually causes him to talk himself out of them.

BUT BELIEVE ME. HE DOES.
