okay, I'm in a bit a a strangle here. i play trumpet, but the other day I found something amazing! This guy in the town over from me is selling a cornet for $100! It was made in France in 1950, silver, near perfect condition, and plays amazing! as you can tell, I want it. but I don't know if I really need to get it, seeing I have a trumpet.

Dude at the pawn shop has tried to sell me a cornet for $60 twice. I've played it both times, and it's a great one.

Cornets are a little different than trumpets, and it never hurts to have another instrument in case something happens to your trumpet.
If it's from the 50s it's probably decent quality for a cheap price like that. I'd get it if I were you!

Screw the looks, check for three things:

1. NO red rot. Check for red spots, if they are there dont bother, it may be 100 dollars, but if there is any form of red spot, it will eventually make a hole in the part requiring repair. It is an irreversable process.....I should know, my student horn has it.

2. Valves The valve mechanisms are working well, they are sealed, and aligned. Valve alignment is not a cheap process.

3. MAKE SURE IT PLAYS. This is the most important step. Make sure the cornet plays, and that you like the tone.

If it fits all three or at least two of three, go ahead spend $100. A cornet is a great instrument, and Olds Trumpets/Cornets, for example, are some of the greatest vintage horns out there, and they go for a real low price on Ebay. Anyway, just ask the old guy if you can see/play the horn. If you like it, above all, BUY IT. You might not get another offer like this one.

the difference is Size, Bore, and Tone. cornets are slightly smaller and more compact than trumpets. cornets have conical bores, trumpets have cylindrical bores. the conical bore gives the cornet a "warmer" sound which matches better with woodwinds than trumpet does.
