Hank's Journal A Fungus Among Us Metz's house is old, cramped, cluttered, and above all tiny, so Hank's room is part of the library, with space made for a bed and a dresser. Everything is dark wood and thick carpet and books. Metz has given Hank one of the drawers on her desk and permission to use it whenever she wasn't, although he normally sits at the small table she found for him in the attic. His journal, a simply composition book he found when Metz was rearranging the study to make room for him, is in this drawer. He writes with crayons and pencils, but there is also a jar of ink and a nib pen for when he learns to write "properly." 1. Rules 2. Profile 3. Powers 4. Family 5. Friends and Less than Friends 6. Profile
Name: Hank Race: Demon (teen) Sex: Male Appearance: As a toddler, Hank has pale skin and blue-gray eyes and blue hair. He's never very happy looking. As he grew, he bulked up a little bit, and his eyes inverted. As a teen, Hank still has no wings, but he's bulked up still more. He also has a secondary form. Item: glass mushroom Personality: Quiet and serious to the point of being withdrawn, Hank is very grave for a teenager. He's very smart and absorbs information at an alarming rate, but just because he has the knowledge does not mean he will share it. Hank likes to keep the secrets he finds secret. He never says two words when one is enough, and has been known to startle people who come into a room and don't notice him until he gets up to leave.
Likes: Rhubarb. Old books. New books. Dark places. Finding things out. Rain. The phonograph in the living room. Grilled cheese. Peaches. Dislikes: Being outside in bright light. Other people nosing in on his secrets. Being talked down too. Coffee grounds. Parrots. Spills.

Powers
Sap
Level 1 By making skin to skin contact with another person or meta and concentrating, Hank can "experience" them to a certain extent. This ability might let him judge whether or not a fellow meta is running a fever or if Metz's heart rate is up. This comes from his "mushroom" item: fungi invade and often become part of their host. This does not grant Hank access to any thoughts or emotions, just biological clues.
Level 2 Through skin to skin contact, Hank can now also absorb flashes of thought. The longer contact happens, the more thought he will absorb. There are no ill effects to whoever he touches.
Level 3 In addition to absorbing longer flashes of thought and emotions from people, Hank can now read animals and plant life as well.
Truffle Shuffle
Level 1 Hank can cook. And he can cook well. It may be natural, or it may be because fungi are delicious, but Hank always knows what to cook and how to make it, although right now the limits of his creation are sandwiches and Ants on A Log.
Level 2 Hank's cooking prowess increases. He can now start to manipulate people's emotions by what he serves- he knows not just what they would prefer to eat, but which foods to serve to make them happy, sad, or angry. He can now cook basic foods, with parental supervision, like eggs, soup, or grilled cheese.
Level 3 Hank is now able to use anything in the kitchen - including the stove and knives. His grasp on what to cook and how too cook it to manipulate people increases, but it is still limited by his basic skill set- he's no 5 star chef.
Prickles
Level 1 Like certain species of fungi, Hank can put out "roots" from his fingers and toes. They allow him to grip extremely well, even on slippery surfaces. After using this ability, Hank must shed his prickles or he will start rooting to everything he touches.
Level 2 Hank can now sprout stronger roots out of most of his body. The strength of these roots will allow him to wallcrawl, but he must still shed the prickles to prevent rooting from what he touches.
Level 3 Hank's prickles are now strong enough not only to support him, but to support about twice his weight. He can also now pull his prickles back in, instead of shedding them.
FERAL SPECIFIC Minds Eye Hank can see invisible people.
Secondary Form Hank has a second form. In this bestial form, Hank's speed increases dramatically - he can move and react at more then twice his normal speed.
When Hank shifts into this form, he looks dramatically different. Tribal markings that are too faint to be seen normally darken, taking on almost the appearance of bruises across his flesh. His eyes glow brighter, and his teeth lengthen (they look dramatic, but are no good for fighting). He also tends to move around on all fours - either knuckling at high speeds, like a gorilla, or charging full out, like a bear.
Resistances
Looking Glass Level 1 Irregular patches of Hank's skin seem to be covered in crystals of glass. These patches will reflect light. This resistance is spotty at best- it is not reflexive, and Hank must actually try to use it.
Level 2 Hank's glass skin has spread to cover almost a third of his body- and he can now reabsorb the glass layer back into his skin, or push it to the top.
Level 3 Hank's glass skin now covers two thirds of his body, and has become thicker and tougher.
Weakness
Bright Lights Hank is extra sensitive to bright light- the sun or indoor lighting. He doesn't like to be in it, and he burns extra fast. He always wears sunglasses when going outside during the day.
Extreme Heat Hank is extra sensitive to heat (this becomes a problem in the kitchen- he tends to cook in just his jeans and an apron to keep cool). Hank must be sure to stay hydrated and can get heatstroke VERY easily.

Family Metz (Mother/guardian)
Metz is a bit of a recluse. She is a historian, and spends a great deal of time researching for her books. Hank was adopted out of her guilt at seeing an abandoned child, not out of her desire to have a family. Metz sees herself as a permanent nanny, rather then a mom. As a result, she does not baby Hank or coo over him; Hank, in turn, does not constantly demand her attention. Their somewhat odd parent/child relationship suits them both just fine. However, Metz has been alone a long time, and Hank needs to be able to rely on someone. Eventually they may both open up.
Metz based posts will be in gray.

He also has a HUGE crush on Adeline.

Songs
You'll Be In My Heart From Disney's Tarzan
Come stop your crying It will be all right Just take my hand Hold it tight
I will protect you from all around you I will be here Don't you cry
For one so small, you seem so strong My arms will hold you, keep you safe and warm This bond between us Can't be broken I will be here Don't you cry
'Cause you'll be in my heart Yes, you'll be in my heart From this day on Now and forever more
You'll be in my heart No matter what they say You'll be here in my heart, always
Why can't they understand the way we feel They just don't trust what they can't explain I know we're different but, deep inside us We're not that different at all
And you'll be in my heart Yes, you'll be in my heart From this day on Now and forever more
Don't listen to them 'Cause what do they know We need each other, to have, to hold They'll see in time I know
When destiny calls you You must be strong I may not be with you But you've got to hold on They'll see in time I know We'll show them together
'Cause you'll be in my heart Yes, you'll be in my heart From this day on, Now and forever more
Oh, you'll be in my heart No matter what they say You'll be in my heart, always Always

Doors and Locks Toddler Journal Entry 1 The writing is large and loopy, written in blue crayon. After a few sentences, a smaller hand of spiky cursive takes over in ink. The spelling is much improved after this point. MEtZ gave me a mushroooom and a roooom. Ther ar 3 lokd doors in heer hous. I cheked. MetZ has a leetle hous butt a big garden. I like the garden. It hasn't been cleaned up in a while, Metz says, but I can play in it all I want as long as I am careful. She doesn't know how long the garden stretches, and I know because I asked. My room is the library. I will put you in my drawer. You are my book. Metz says she will find me a lock to keep you safe. Tomorrow we are going to get beignets, I don't know what a beignet is but Metz says I will like them. Also more peaches because I ate all of the peaches Metz had. Goodnight, Book.

The Daily Routine For the past several years, Metz had had a pretty cemented daily routine. Every day she got up, jogged to a local bakery about a mile away, picked up either 2 beignets or 2 croissants, and jogged back. Once home she would shower, and eat one of her pastries for breakfast. If it was a croissant she would have it with butter or jam.
After breakfast she would clean a room in her house, and collect notes on her writing topic. At about half past noon, she would eat lunch, and go back to researching and writing until about three, unless it was a Tuesday or Thursday, and then she would go to teach her class on British History at the university. At three she would backup everything she had worked on, and answer any e-mails from her department head. Then she would have a cup of tea with either the other beignet or the other croissant, and either grade papers or read for a few hours until dinner.
Once a week she drove to the grocery story after class, and every Sunday she went to Mass, and visited the graveyard. On alternate Saturday mornings she went either to the library, or to the mall. Adopting Hank had changed some things.Every morning Hank walked with Metz to a bakery, where she purchased either 4 beignets or 4 croissants, a large tea, and a cup of orange juice or chocolate milk. They would drink their drinks and eat a pastry outside under the umbrellas, if it was gloomy or rainy, or inside, on sunny days. Hank didn't like to be out in the sun, and always wore a hat when it was bright out.
Afterwards they walked home, and Metz would clean a room and shower quickly. Hank had to stay inside while she was doing this, but once she set down to work for the day, he was allowed to go outside. Hank usually explored the garden- which was very interesting- but on days when it was too bright or too rainy, even for him, he explored what he could of the house. He and Metz worked on lunch together- he already enjoyed assembling the sandwiches, even if he couldn't use the stove- and then either he would go back to playing or spend a few hours at the Boring Childcare Center at the university. He usually got through that by practicing his reading and writing.
Once they got home, Metz made her tea and he had cocoa, and then he got to watch an hour of television while she read. They worked together on dinner, and after "ruminating" as Metz called it, and Hank thought of as letting his tummy settle, Metz would give him a bath. Once he was jammied up and tucked in, he usually heard the water running for Metz's bath. He went to the store and the library with her, and to Mass; she always had him wait in the car when they went to the graveyard, but Hank didn't mind. Getting up and going to Mass without his morning pastry made him sleepy, but on Sundays they ate breakfast afterwards.
Hank enjoyed their daily walks, and the beignets and the croissants, and the exploring in the garden. He enjoyed his bubble baths, and cooking with Metz. He didn't like the Childcare center; it was too loud and the building it was in was too bright.
If only their routine wasn't interrupted by visitors.
