I've held this in for a long time, but I've gotta let it out:
THE PRESENCE OF A GIRL IN ANY GIVEN BAND DOES NOT MAKE SAID BAND REVOLUTIONARY, RIOT GRRL OR EVEN FEMINIST.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs? Not even punk. Evenescence? Not even indie. (I could have used many an example, but those were the most convenient, as the thread is still alive.)
Listening to a band soley because of their genders, or even the gender of just the lead singer, is by all means JUST AS SEXIST as getting angry that "grrls on mtv are slutz and dunt were enuff clothz." Though the message of girl rock bands may be less promiscuous or less blatantly sexual, it's not necessarily any more empowering to women than Britney Spears' "The Touch of My Hands." No genre is any less corrupt than any other genre, and the idea that a girl rock band is better than a girl pop artist is completely misguided.
Is it wrong that I am annoyed by this? I realize that radio and television can serve as a sort of "gateway music," if you will, but why isn't there more discouragement in this forum towards musicians who are not femenist, or even political in nature? Was I wrong in thinking that this is a feminist punk-oriented forum?
Rebel Girl and maybe a few others seem to have the right idea.

you're right. honestly the reasons i didn't erase the yeah yeah yeahs thread are pretty lame. i was trying to be a nice mod, i was being lazy, and i kinda like the yeah yeah yeahs. you know that sort of thing. but you're totally right. they're not riot grrl and just because a band has all or even just one female member doesn't make them riot grrl at all.

i got a shoutout. SCORE.
exactly! i see this misconception ALL THE TIME. no, just because there is a girl in the band doesn't mean it's riot grrrl or even that it's empowering to women. i wouldn't call songs like "work it" or "not tonight" (missy elliott and lil' kim, respectively) as having any sort of 'good' message in them, but they're by women.
i have a tendency to prefer female vocalists over male vocalists, because i just like the sound of their voice better. however, i most definitely understand that a lot of the stuff i like by women isn't riot grrrl.
perhaps we should have a "WHAT IS RIOT GRRRL?!?!?!?!?!" sticky.

Rebel Girl and maybe a few others seem to have the right idea. im going to try and be as respectful as possible on this, considering im very new to this guild, but a. no s**t. b. you're coming off as a tool. and c. it's riot grrrl. three r's. that's very irritating. to me. but underneath your wording, i quite agree with you.

How was that trying to be as respectful as possible? Really, where was the respect?
a. At the time I made this post, the threads that were most frequently posted in were about the Donnas, etc. b. YOU come off as a tool by criticizing what is both a very old thread and a thread that's history you aren't familiar with c. OH GOD I MISSPELLED SOMETHING. You misspelled "I'm" multiple times. That's very irritating to me. and d. Lists make everyone look like jerks, regardless of how respectful you're trying to be. Straight-up fact.
Hi, I'm Heather, and I used to be one of the few who posted in this guild semi-frequently. I kind of dissapeared. Welcome to the Riot GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRLS Guild.
