IN THE NAME OF THE MOON! CONCEPT

SECTION ONE

Name: Lysander Cadwell

Nicknames: Ly, Caddie

Gender: Male

Age: 17

Birthday: October 31st

Sign: Scorpio

School: Azure Valley

Fav. Food: Artichoke hearts dipped in lemon-herb butter (which is impossible to get in a school cafeteria I'll have you know!)

Hated Food: Chocolate. Even more so -filled- chocolate. Ruining perfectly good filling flavors by stuffing them in nasty ground seed paste.

Hobbies:

  • Scrabble -- Totally not a 'cool' hobby but that doesn't change the fact that he's got three different editions of the official Scrabble dictionary tucked away in his room. He always liked words and got into competing in spelling bee's as a child. Once he was old enough to not chew on pieces or loose them his parents introduced him to the wonderful world of Scrabble and he's been addicted ever sense. He played in tournaments while in high school but has had to take a break from that because of preparing for collage. It's more important to him to focus on his schoolwork than scrabble tournaments. He does still like to play tournament style when he plays just for the extra challenge.

  • Psychology -- After you've written a thesis paper on a subject you'd call it a hobby too >( (and no don't ask why he wrote his thesis already. He's not a freak, really). Lysander wants to be a Psychologist when he's done with college and absolutely loves the subject. He's fascinated by how people's minds work and with how complicated the human mind can be. He likes studying how people can be influenced by outside forces on an emotional level and how nature vs nurture influences development. His classes Azure Valley are all geared toward a major in Psychology when he transfers, hopefully, to DCU. He plans on becoming a behavioral psychologist (he wrote his thesis on nature vs nurture
Note: Lysander hasn't actually written a damn thing but he likes telling people he has because their reactions to it are priceless.)

  • People Watching -- Associated with his above love of Psychology Lysander will go to the mall just to sit on a bench (with a good supply of Starbucks of course) and watch whoever happens to walk by. He thinks you can learn a lot about people by what they do when they believe everyone is watching them. He doesn't really do this officially as a study, unless he's working on schoolwork, and it's more of a casual thing. To him it's a good way to relax and learn at the same time. He prefers to spend his people watching time alone but will occasionally take a good friend or two along.

  • Fashion -- Ly -loves- fashion. Keeping up with the latest styles of anything is practically a full time job for him. He reads ever fashion magazine like it's a bible and actually spends time cross referencing them with each other to find out what -really- is the height of fashion at the time. His out of school clothes and any accessories with his uniform are tell-tale signs of his obsession (which is the plague of his trust fund). He doesn't generally stick to any one designer over another but if he -had- to pick it would be Versace.

  • Golf-- Lysander started playing golf at a pretty young age. His father figured it would be an easy way to keep an eye on the kid while he still got to play with his business buddies. He hasn't really ever taken it seriously and mostly plays for fun but he's pretty good at it. He plays on the team at Azure Valley (which his father takes as meaning he'll have business connections for life). Playing as a child, and often carrying around his fathers gear, is wear he earned the nickname "Caddie" which he hates with a passion.

Virtues:

  • "Hey Preacher Man..." Passionate -- Having been raised to believe that the only way to change something is to stand up for it Lysander is extremely passionate about his beliefs. If he'd been born in the 60's he would have been right there putting daises in loaded rifles without batting an eye. He is willing to stand up for what he believes in do or die and believes everyone else should do the same. He has no qualms about standing on the proverbial soapbox and telling everyone within earshot what is on his mind and what should be done about it. His parents taught him from a early age to stand up for what you believed in because if no one stands up nothing changes. Both of his parents were big activists involved in civil rights (making -everyone- equal and getting rid of labels based on gender, race, religion, etc), animal rights, and environmentalism. He grew up holding onto his father's leg while his father held up signs and yelled out protests. He doesn't really do much thinking about if people will follow him. Of course they will Note: See "Hubris what now?" flaw for why he thinks people will follow him.
  • "Don't you want to say you were there?" Vocal/Passionate-- Lysander was taught from an early age that you should be willing to stand up for whatever you believe in till the bitter end. He has no problems telling people what he thinks and defending what he believes with every bit of his energy. He will never back down on what he believes to be right. He is very good at speaking on issues from an emotional angle, tugging on heart strings and the like, because he believes he's right so much. His biggest gripe is Civil Rights for everyone. He's very outspoken about making everyone equal because his father was always very outspoken about the same issue. He does join protests on a regular basis when one comes through town and likes getting the proverbial soap box and making speeches to rile up the other protesters.Note: While this can make him a good leader type it also has a -major- draw back. See "Why isn't that -me-" in the flaws section for details
  • "I've been working on this for six years" Dedicated -- Once he has set his mind something he will see it through to the end no matter what the end may be. There is no half way with Lysander and he has his favorite Quote (Yoda's famous "Do or Do Not, there is no Try" tattooed round his ankle. He truly believes in the motto too. He never 'tries' something. He does it and he does it until he's gone as far as humanly possible. Currently this is focused on his desire to become a psychologist.

Flaws:

  • "Hubris what now?" Obstinate -- Lysander thinks he's right. All the time. What's the point of believing or doing something if it's not right, right? He tends to trample over other people's opinions if they don't agree with him or just outright ignores that they had an opinion at all. This usually results if others not sharing their opinion with him and letting him run himself straight into trouble hoping (vainly) that it will teach him a lesson and make him change his mind.
  • "Why isn't that -me-"." Jealous -- If you have it and he doesn't Lysander wants it and most likely hates you for it. He has been known on occasion to take time out of his day to find ways to take whatever someone else has gotten away from them. Case in point, he lost a golf match once and planted specially weighted balls in the winners bag and got them disqualified for cheating. He wants to be the one in the spotlight and hates it when other people are recognized over him. He -hates- loosing more than anything else and he takes competitions to the extreme. Note: This effects Sailor Arachne's ability to work in a team environment. He will not take being 'second banana' to anyone and if he's not in charge well you can just forget him helping or listening to you.
  • "Temper, temper." Anger Management needed -- When Lysander gets angry, and he can get that way pretty easily, he is a force to be reckoned with and not in a good way. His anger makes him completely irrational and he is prone to lash out (mostly verbally) against those around him including friends if they're in the wrong place at the wrong time. Once you make Lysander angry it is -very- hard to get him to forgive you. He just does not take anything lightly and will hold onto a grudge well past when it's necessary. Generally once you've aroused his anger he seethes quietly behind a smile and plots your demise. He gets so attached to his views and ideals that seeing someone going against those views grates against his temper. Note: This heavily effects Sailor Arachne. Loosing in battle = humiliation to Lysander and if/when he meets that opponent again he is very likely to make stupid decisions in trying to avenge his defeat

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Eyes: Sharp, intense, and penetrating. More oval in shape than round. Bright fiery red-orange in color

Hair: Black with a glossy red-orange tint. Style up to the artist

Face: Full lips, delicate facial structure

Body: long-limbed and lanky

Fashion:

At Home: Cargo pants and light t-shirts that are battered to the the point of being fluffy and soft and nothing he'd ever be seen in public in (They're not fashionable and he's not allowed to look frumpy in public).

At School: Neat and trimmed. He irons his uniform -every- morning without fail. He does like to add his own touches with flashy watches and simple yet decorative rings.

At Play: Whatever happens to be in fashion at the time. He keeps up with the heights of fashion like a maniac and always has a new outfit and new shoes and new -everything-.

Sailor Scout: Clean lines, slick, and debonair. Oh, did we mention he -loves- Victorian era clothing? No? Well now you know.

SECTION TWO

Sailor Scout: Sailor Arachne

Concept:

  • Basics -- Forceful. Passionate. Obsessive. Phobia. Spiders. Fangs. Creepy-crawlies. Dark Corners. Rolled up newspaper (oh come on, i had to)
  • Inspirational Images -- Spider coat coat corset corset boots bracelet
  • What's in a Name? -- Lysander is a Greek name meaning "One who is Freed". I intended this to be able to play into his character as he will be 'freed' of his fears.
  • What's in a Sign? -- The Scorpio, another arachnid and Lysander's zodiac, sign plays heavily on his personality. Scorpio is a feminine sign and while Lysander isn't quite 'girly' he's not exactaly Mr. Man either. All his virtues and flaws come directly from basic qualities of a Scorpio

Challenge: The only thing you have to fear .... is me!

Attack #1 - Arachne's Venom!
[Arachne cups his hands over each other and a ball of violent green energy starts to grow between his palms. Once enough energy is collected the orb is throw at an enemy. Once struck the enemy takes the effect of the harsh acid burning into their skin and clothing ((Note: The balls can only get about the size of a baseball. They work on the same basis of an Orb of Acid spell in dnd and strikes that connect burn so long as the acid is still on skin or clothing. The acid can burn through clothing/fabrics and cause 1st degree burns if it contacts skin.))]
  • Duration: Instantaneous, the orbs must be thrown within one post or Arachne risks burning himself.
  • Avoidable: Yes. Arachne must throw the balls himself so they're only as good as his aim.
  • Downside: If Arachne can't throw the ball within a post of it's creation the acid orb will begin to burn his own hands

Attack #1a - Arachne Venomous Wish!
[Arachne cups his hands over each other and a ball of violent green energy starts to grow between his palms. Once enough energy is collected the orb is throw at an enemy. Once struck the enemy takes the effect of the harsh acid burning into their skin and clothing. ((Note: The balls can only get about the size of a softball. Now the acid can not be removed from whatever surface they strike and continue to cause burns. The orbs can also now cause splash effects. Near-by targets (enemies and allies take a weaker form of damage equivalent to the weaker version of the attack. This attack can be done once per battle then Arachne is reduced to his base attack.))]
  • Duration: Instantaneous, the orbs must be thrown within one post or Arachne risks burning himself.
  • Avoidable: Yes. Arachne must throw the balls himself so they're only as good as his aim.
  • Downside: If Arachne can't throw the ball within a post of it's creation the acid orb will begin to burn his own hands. The orbs splash effects can also harm allies if they are close to the point of impact

Attack #2 - Widow's Kiss
[Arachne holds his hands out in front of him and the misty form of a spider appears in his hands. The spider drops from his hands and skurries across the battle field toward his enemies intent on sinking it's fangs into their flesh.. Enemies are poisoned by the spiders venom and suffer it's effects for one minute. ((Note: Arachne can only hit one target with the attack. The ethereal spider disappears once the attack has taken effect)
  • Duration:One minute. Effects slowly get worse off as the time lapses. Can only be done once per battle.
  • Avoidable: Only if you can knock him out before the spider gets you (it disappears if he looses consciousness/stops concentrating). The spider is incorporeal.
  • Downside: Arachne must concentrate to keep the spider on the battlefield. If he is knocked out or looses focus the spider vanishes and his attack is wasted
  • Venom Effects:For the first few seconds enemies are unaware of the effects of the bite. The venom slowly drains enemies abilities, sapping their strength and magic energy, while under it's effects. Attacks slowly become harder to maintain or impossible, in the case of attacks that need large amounts of energy, until the venom renders the effected opponent useless magic wise. Note: The effects are not permanent and wear off over time. The complete time span is 4 posts of effects (one without effect and 3 as the effects get worse) On the 5th post the effected individual is almost completely drained of energy. They retain enough to keep powered up but are generally out of power to do more than physical attacks. Stronger opponents (Eternals/Generals/Prince/ss'/GK/Q's) may still be able to get off weak attacks. The total effects last for about one minuet before the opponents powers begin to return

SECTION THREE

Tidbits:
  • The Devil's Hand -- Lysander is left-handed and while he refuses to 'learn' how to be right handed he counts it as a curse more often than not. He's always getting ink on his hand (he prefers writing with gel/liquid ink pens), always bumping into people when he has to sit next to someone at a table, and always backwards when trying to learn how to do something with his hands.

  • "Flirting? Nah, it was just to get a reaction out of you" -- Lysander is a -horrible- flirt, or at least that's what most people will tell you. He on the other had is adamant that he only does it because the reactions people have are -priceless-. He doesn't really actually hit on people but if there is the option to make a comment dirty he'll be the first one to do it (and he doesn't care if you're a guy or girl). He'd be the sort to start a "... in my pants" joke (though he does try to keep a -little- class in his comments)

  • Man, Woman ... wtf we're all human --Lysander never has, and never will, pay attention to things that are meant to be 'boy' things and 'girl' things. He was not raised in a home where things were 'boy' and 'girl' so he's never really understood why people seem to conform to that. It seems to him to be a lot easier, and cause less pointless issues, to just go with what you want and what feels comfortable to you.

It is also an issue that he's very outspoken about. He believes firmly that if people stopped paying attention to 'man' and 'woman' that everything would work a lot smoother. There wouldn't be men thinking that women couldn't do things just because they're women and there wouldn't be any women complaining about men holding them back. Everyone would be the same and get treated the same. Bye Bye sexist issues of any type

  • Are you crying? -- Lysander has a powerful, and often overbearing, personality and the reason for this is because he attaches strong emotions to everything. His parents have often explained his emotions like a volcano. Calm and cool on the outside but there is always the lurking danger of an eruption and you -never- know when it's going to happen. While he is never really outwardly calm and collected, he likes to shove his opinion in people's faces way too much for that, he can keep his explosive temper mostly under wraps. Most of his 'explosive' outbursts in public usually happen while he's protesting so they do not seem -too- out of place. He has been known though to lay into others at school who try to stand against his opinion.

  • "The path to heaven often leads through Hell!" -- Lysander's nature leaves him very vulnerable to straying down the wrong path in the name of good. Kill a few innocents and world peace comes about? Well it's for the greater good right? And if you're going to believe in something and stand up for it you -must- be willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish your goal. Another individual with a personality similar to his who is very good at being manipulative could stand a chance of swaying Lysander (or Sailor Arachne) to the 'dark side' if they worded things correctly. Note: This is a future possible plot point/character development issue for Lysander.

SUP DOOD HERE IS SOME CRIT

Overall profile: Try to stick to the contest profile, I.E. the one in the forms thread. Un-Hobbies and Tidbits should be moved to a different post.

Hobbies!
Scrabble--Does he play in tournaments? How does this provide an opportunity to socialize? Also, re-read: bee's should be bees, loose should be lose, and sense should be since. Give us a history of how this hobby's affected him. Did he play in a club at school, etc etc.

Psychology--Mentioning a thesis paper, what did he write it on? What does he want to concentrate in as a psychologist? How much time does this take up? Does he take classes for this? How did he become interested in psychology?

People watching--Maybe make this and psychology one hobby. Would you say that his love of psychology stems from an interest in people-watching, or did his people-watching come before his psychology? What kind of people-watcher is he? Does he take notes on what he sees? Does he watch people in groups or alone?

Fashion--What designers does he like? If he could shop anywhere with an unlimited charge card, where would he go? How does this affect how people view him?

Virtues:
Passionate sounds like everyone else in the world's passionate--what makes this unique to Lysander? You've got how he's passionate--loudly and out there. Why is he like this? Give more details, an example maybe, that makes this trait really Lysander's. Does he research his viewpoints or assume because he thinks his view is right other people will?

Magnetic is a good writeup for a trait that could very easily become overpowered. But again, it's very general. Who, what, where, when, how--what subjects in particular seem to draw people to him? Where does this often happen: in class? In common day? When does it happen--when he's passionate, or when he's expected to lead? How is he passionate--you say he's vocal but does he write articles or make grandiose speeches?

Dedicated is, again, very general. Refer to my notes on who, what, where, when and how above on how to improve this.

FLAWS:
The who, what, where, when and how will also be helpful. I like the first two traits a lot.

However, his temper seems a little out of place? You've so far formed up a rather logical, cold character--which you should watch out for, by the way, all your flaws are very 'cool' and could shape up a rather flat-seeming badass if you're not cautious!--and then out of nowhere he has this hair-trigger temper? What sets him off? It seems to me that his magnetism would be a little strained if he was seen to yell every time someone showed him up or otherwise set him off... How do these two traits interact?

SENSHINESS!!11

Okay, my only real problem is that your attacks are more for a senshi of illusion than a senshi of arachnophobia. It also only affects those who already have arachnophobia, which seems kind of pointless. INSTEAD, perhaps he inflicts a paralyzing fear of the spiders he causes them to see? Make it like a will save in D&D?

I might also consider just making Sailor Arachne the senshi of spiders in general. You'll get a lot more mileage out of it.

Good luck!

added in some more detail to some of the virtues/flaws. I didn't explain everything there because i didn't want to end up with a book for each entry.

Tidbits were added to the third post where more explanation on his personality can be found, including some of the extra info you suggested.

I did leave the first two attacks rendered sorta useless against people who can' ignore spiders because there -are- people who just are not scared by spiders XD In Sehshi and Super stage Arachne is less of an offensive senshi and more of a defensive one

played with the powers. There are 2 versions of the Eternal power because i'm not sure which i want to go with and which would be better fitting in the shop setting

I had to do a double take because I was originally questing this. xD

Anyhow, about the powers, I'm not sure if they would be allowed because Krista_Darkangel_Silme had/has a RL slot for a Senshi of Spiderwebs. You might want to ask her about it because I don't think she's questing it anymore? (Not sure... sorry). >o<;

Good luck for your quest! c:

i looked up her quest and the powers he's got are different from hers. I could be wrong but from what i've read people are allowed to have bases that are close so long as they don't have the -same- powers. Kinda like there can be multiple senshi with fire bases, they each just manipulate it different ways.

The personality concept's mostly good, there's just a few bits I want to touch on here...

Okay, first off, I am having an extremely hard time believing that this character is a high-school student and already has a master's thesis written or partially written. A thesis is not so simple that it's something you can do on the side -- if I'm lucky enough to get into grad school and I hit that point, I'm fully expecting to spend a full year or more doing nothing academically but work on my master's thesis. They are full-blown research projects, under the supervision of a professional advisor, and are going to cover topics a lot less broad and interdisciplinary than something like the debate over nature vs. nurture.

Basically imagine that you are writing a small novel, but preluding the actual writing process you are doing months of intensive research to figure out what it's about in the first place and how it's going to end. This is not something that someone enrolled in high school, no matter how gifted they are, can be pursuing as a hobby. I understand you're trying to demonstrate your character's intelligence and dedication to his interests, but demonstrating it by saying he's working on a thesis at his age is too unrealistic. D:

I highly suggest that you try and rewrite Lysander's Magnetic trait, or replace it with something else. Right now it is reading off in a very godmode / twinkish way -- you CANNOT dictate that other characters are naturally drawn to him, or otherwise tell other players how their characters are supposed to react to Lysander in his profile. That said, a trait that's about how others can't help but stand behind him is sort of a bad idea: he can have good leadership skills, but he has to earn a place of leadership and the respect of others through RP.

His Jealous flaw needs something in it that other characters can interact with. How do his jealous tendencies affect his behavior, and how does that make him an unlikable person as both Lysander AND Arachne?

For attacks 1 and 2:
-how long do the acid effects last? D: They need to wear off eventually! Usually a good duration is 20~30 seconds or so.
-how 'harsh' is the acid? Please specify what it does so players know what they're working with.

For the Eternal attack:
- please specify how many targets total Arachne can hit
- Five minutes of total paralysis is WAY TOO LONG. That can get people killed. IMO the stat debuff / corroding their energy is going far enough.

The thesis thing i'm not taking out. It was put in there as a joke thing that Lysander says because he's the type of person who will say s**t like that just to make himself look better or just to see how people react to it. I've put a note with it saying that's what it's for though. It wasn't ever meant to be something he -actually- did, i know what sort of work goes into one, which was why the tone of that section was meant to come off more as a joke.

I'm note quite sure how the Magnetic trait is saying anyone has to like him or godmodding? No where in there did i say "you have to follow him because of this". There -are- types of people that others are just naturally drawn to and that isn't always a good thing (Ted Bundy anyone?). Player characters are perfectly welcome to say he's a jackass or not respect him unless he earns it. I thought it would be perfectly okay to say he's got a lot of 'disposable' friends who are the 'many' people alluded to in the trait. I was thinking of things from the Mob perspective. In a giant crowd, say in a protest, whether you like someone or not people as a whole are generally drawn to whoever is shouting the loudest and calling for action. No not everyone is but mob mentality usually does that.

I changed it slightly to reflect more toward him being passionate about his beliefs.

The notes section of his Jealous flaw covers why it makes him unlikable as Arachne. He has to be in charge or he'll just ignore whoever is trying to be in charge so he doesn't work well, or at all really, in groups unless he's the leader (which he wont be since he's just starting out) I added a bit more in for Lysander's side.

adjusted his attacks
PostPosted: Sun Mar 13, 2011 5:52 pm

Really? D: I was going off the description in his Dedicated virtue, which makes it seem like he's not joking about it:

Quote:
He never 'tries' something. He does it and he does it until he's gone as far as humanly possible. Currently this is focused on his desire to become a psychologist. He's already written a basic version of his masters thesis even though he's got years until he gets there.

If the thesis thing really IS a joke meant to mess with people, then I'd recommend not using it as an example of how dedicated he is to his goals, because that seems pretty contradictory.

The Magnetic trait looked like twinking / godmode because when you write a character profile, you are advertising what other players will expect when interacting with your character. So, when you include phrasing like "people can't help but stand behind him because they believe he is right," it is automatically going to look like you are expecting other players to write their characters behaving that way around Lysander. People don't RP mobs, they RP individuals, so it's not a good idea to assume mob mentality in an RP unless everyone has consented to write their characters as a unified mob first. ^^;

Thanks for clarifying on the attacks! Since a first-degree burn is still going to hurt long after the acid is gone, the effect of the attack itself should probably be instantaneous instead of last as long as 30 seconds. @__@; Sorry about that, I wasn't very good at gauging this without knowing the specific effect was. ;;;

On the Eternal attack:
- does once per battle mean he can only hit one opponent?
- Sorry for not touching on this before, but I'd highly recommend making the attack simpler in its execution (e.g. removing the post-count rules) so it's easier to RP. When I imagine RPing this with one of my characters, it seems restrictive and sort of confusing to have to follow such a specific pattern of how to respond to Arachne's attack.
- Five minutes is the length of a typical battle, so even taking off the paralysis it's still far too long for an effect like that. I'd suggest taking the length down to one minute; which is still more than long enough to get a major advantage from it.

I've never expected that when reading someone else's profile. I let my characters react to other characters as they will because they're controlled via people and usually when i think about RP settings the PC characters are the minority. Considering we're writing in an entire city there are going to be more people not PC controlled than PC controlled. It's just how i'm used to thinking about Rp things so i didn't think there was anything wrong with it. From my point of view if i saw that in a profile i would think how my character would react to someone like that since i have plenty of characters who upon meeting someone with that sort of personality (Lucien for example) would think they're an a** and ignore them on principal i didn't see why other people wouldn't also do that.

Eternal attack:
-Yes, it says he can only hit one target with the attack in the first section.
- There aren't any post rules except for the fact that it takes 4 posts for the effects to happen fully. There aren't any restrictions on how to respond other than by the 4th post after his attack connects you take the full effects. I put that there because there have been other players complaining that other players ignore their attacks completely. Anyone playing against this can play it as they see fit within the four post time frame. To me having those time frame things for duration attacks is the easiest solution and not at all confusing so long as i note once the attack connects what happens.
- edited the time

I meant a duration of one minute total for the whole attack -- you still have different times listed in your description. Could you please fix that? <3
