With social networking sites like facebook and myspace getting back in touch with those you have lost touch with has never been easier. However, it has got me wondering if it's a good idea. Just recently for me I got back in touch with an old friend who I held in high regard back in the day. Turns out he's a radical religious nut who is a racist, homophobic, hypocritical d**k. As a result when ever I think about what we did back in HS all I can think about it what he has turned into. It's just maddening, but it has made em think maybe there is a reason why we don't all stay in touch and maybe social networking sites are actually for the worse, not better on this front.
I've just been thinking about this a lot lately, just about how whether or not we should be trying to get back in contact with those we didn't stay in touch with. Even despite that one person I just keep getting requests from those I used to know and hang out with and its started to make me realize that hay there's a reason why I stopped hanging out with you biggrin

I tend to avoid the past for that reason. I deactivated my Facebook, and I don't even use my Myspace anymore.

I use FB to keep in touch with friends from high school that went out of state. (and to play the games. <<)
If I ended up having a d**k friend like that, guess who'd be removed? Asshattery like that is not okay.

If I ended up having a d**k friend like that, guess who'd be removed? Asshattery like that is not okay. I did. I'm really tempted to tell the blog site he writes for that he use to be a girl too o3o just to prove that see those crazies don't have your back so maybe you shouldn't give the finger to the community you are apart of. My love told me that'd be waaay to much of a d**k move though and bring me down to that level.

Though admittedly, that would be totally hilarious. xDX3 yeah it would be, but for me it poses a good question about the usefullness of social networking sites because without it I would have never known that she became a he (well I knew when we graduated he was thinking about going through the physical and legal process), got married and now believes the jews in cahoots with teh gays are controlling congress and destroying the morale of our offspring rolleyes and if I had not known I wouldn't care nor have the overwhelming urge to just point out a little more of his past.

I've gotten in touch with long lost friends via facebook, even though we don't talk much xD I dunno, I find it's kind of nice to see what people are up to, whether or not its good or bad and such ^^

I don't see facebook as a tool to get back in touch with past friends, but to keep in touch with current friends/relatives/classmates it can be useful that way I think. There have been a few old friends that I've added on facebook, but I hardly talk to them and haven't felt like I needed to add other old friends. The problem with facebook is that so many people just add everyone, and then you can't talk to anyone because everyone is trying to talking a ton of people. So if you don't get on often then chances are, they don't talk to you much. And ignore your updates, since you aren't there normally they don't notice when you are. I don't see why anyone should add everyone they know, just people they actually want to talk too.

I've added a few people that I've lost touch with, and I'll add some people that come looking for me- but if my experience with the person wasn't positive or I don't remember who they are, I refuse the request. I don't want to be haunted by assholes from my past every time I log-in to try and keep in touch with people I'm friends with now.
I prefer FaceBook for my NOW life and generally keep the people of my PAST life hidden, anyway. I don't really care what they have to say.

I have a facebook that I use to keep in touch with family, to explore my political and spiritual beliefs and to meet new friends who share both. If I find out that any I know is a neo-nazi, bigot, beckerhead, or zealot xian, then I thank facebook for teaching me who I don't need in my life any longer. xp
