Jeraha was pleased to see that the day was nice and quiet. There was no rain, a nice wind, and not a cloud in the sky. Actually, it almost seemed too good to be true. He smiled at the sky for a moment, before his usual look of irritation and contempt returned to his face.

It was the standard when he didn't get to be around his family.

Today he was hunting for them. The cubs were getting bigger and more independent, but they still weren't large enough to pull off a large kill on their own. Not enough to sustain themselves, anyway. The job fell on Jeraha, as he would not let Chikala tax herself in such a way when he was perfectly capable of providing for his family.

The trouble was in finding something to kill, not the actual killing of it. There didn't seem to be anything around. He walked a bit further from his home. Sure it meant a longer way to drag something back, but it was worth it in the long run.

User Image Fleance turned his ruddy eyes to the sky, and as he did it seemed his frown just slid off of his face. He was taking a break from his cubs, leaving them with his brother and their cousins, taking a weight off of his shoulders. Yoshiteru, his familiar, was also with them and probably sick of the cubs too. But Fleance loved his waterbuck, despite any complaining about baby sitting.

The god was wearing his mortal guise, as usual, but the ashen footprints were hard to disguise, but his tail swept them away behind them. The lion yawned, smiling still, and he sat in the open, looking around the plain like a happy observer. It seemed mostly empty, but Fleance knew better, thinking of all the little animals scurrying around or under his feet.

Jeraha knew something was around. He could hear the movements. Continuing forward, keeping himself low, he wandered towards the noises, stalking in hopes of finding something yummy.

What he found, though, was not something yummy after all. It was only another lion. Young, it seemed, but not so much so that Jeraha felt like ignoring it. Maybe this guy had seen some more food around nearby.

“What are you doing here?” he asked the animal, “you’re in my territory, you know. Not that I’m mad about it. Just a little perplexed.” He say himself down, tilting his head slightly to one side. This was a little strange- normally he didn’t venture to speak with other animals.

More learned from having a family.

Fleance's head shot up like a prey animal hearing a predator and ready to take flight. He stood in that manner until he saw the black lion, and even then he was still debating an escape. The lion looked older and more experienced, specifically in battle if the scars crossing his back were any indicator. This lion had quite the presence.

However, he sat and spoke, which meant he was at least civil enough to not attack first and ask questions later. Manners were always welcome for Fleance. But he was on this lion's territory, and that was quite rude. The adolescent made a face. "I'm so sorry, I had no idea!" His ears lay flat on his head, and though no one was upset, he was still nervous even being around the lion.

Oh no, and what if there were more of them? A whole pride of grizzly lions. Fleance's pelt shuddered at the thought. "I just wandered here by mistake, I can go." He raised a paw nervously, as though to turn and run at the word.

Jeraha smiled.

It was good to see that this lion was not one he needed to be worried about. Recently it had felt as though he needed to be on the look out. Like something was set to happen and it wasn’t going to be a good thing. The nightmares he’d been having, waking him up in a panic in the middle of the night, had not been fun by any means. Too bad he could never remember them the next morning. Sighing faintly, he shook his head, though only to rid himself of his thoughts. Whatever he thought might be coming, it probably didn’t have anything to do with this frightened-looking young animal.

“That’s alright,” he replied quickly, “you don’t need to hurry off. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you… you just can’t be too careful when there’s a family to protect, you know?” He smiled faintly, wondering if this young creature could possibly have a family of his own yet.

It had taken him a long time to get his mate.

Unknown to either lion, they were more similar than they would ever know. Fleance had recurring nightmares about his brother- either premonitions of the future or memories of the past lives that had been extinguished. But he wasn't having trouble with them today. No, his mind was in the present, and preoccupied with the one in front of him.

He was trying to put Fleance at ease, but very few could help the slightest bit, if any at all. But he had family too? ...Surprising. A little. But perhaps he'd been too quick to judge. Sheepishly, he nodded, thinking of his three cubs. "Uhm, don't worry, I'm pretty easy to startle..." He trailed off and coughed, then pulled a face, hoping no ashes were on his breath, and quickly he looked again at the male.

"Uh, I'm Fleance!" He tried to distract him. Hopefully, it'd work.

“My name is Jeraha,” he said with a slight nod of his head in polite greeting. This animal, while a little on the jumpy seemed, hardly seemed like someone to be altogether concerned with. There seemed to be a gentle air about him. Something he couldn’t quite place, but was pleased to have around. Perhaps it was just nice to have someone there with his who wasn’t trying to kill him, like the lion in his nightmares.

He hadn’t been able to tell his mate about the things haunting him, but only because he didn’t want to work her into any kind of worry. How he loathed it when his actions caused her any kind of discomfort.

It was better to leave her out of it when there really wasn’t anything to be that worried about. Everyone had nightmares, right?

“It’s nice to meet you, Fleance. I apologize for starting things off on the wrong paw between us. I’m not… great at casual conversation. Or meeting others.”

"Nice to meet you too, Jeraha." Fleance bowed his head in return. Even for a god he had respect for every mortal he met. After all, many of them were tougher than he was. The adolescents' grin was still as meekly awkward as ever. Oh! It was like they were cut from the same cloth! But not exactly. What with the black lion coping with his past by becoming tougher and hardened, and Fleance... Well, Fleance seemed to think self-loathing was more of the answer he was looking for.

"I'm quite like you, at least in that respect." A gleam of sunshine passed over his nose and he looked up at the sky. The smile from before returned to his face, and the heat of the sun warmed and relaxed him. "It's quite the lovely day, isn't it?"

Jeraha smiled. This lion did seem like he was a relatable sort, if not a little young. Then again, these days it seemed like every lion he met was younger than him. Was he just getting really, really old? Probably. Or all the older lions had moved off to other areas, leaving him as the oldest in the area.

Which seemed unlikely at best.

Looking up at the sky, he nodded thoughtfully. “Yes, it’s a nice day. Good for some hunting, I should think. Some of the animals will probably draw out soon to head for the watering hole.”

Fleance relaxed a little bit around Jeraha. You know, this guy wasn't so bad. He was gruff and maybe a little socially awkward, whereas Fleance was... really just socially awkward. Absentmindedly his tail swept around his feet as though to clear the ground of any ashes, and the god took in a deep breath. This was a nice place for sure. He'd been to much harsher climates, some forests or swamps or caves were dark and dank, and he'd been to volcanoes to visit his sister of the same domain. The air there was thick and heavy, noxious and Fleance couldn't distinguish the ashes in the air as those from the volcano or himself.

But here... Ahhh. A breath of fresh air- literally. He'd have to find a place like it to settle down with his cubs. Not here, of course, he didn't want to even slightly encroach on Jeraha's territory. Heavens no.

Dwelling on the lion's conclusion, he nodded. "It seems like good hunting grounds. Your cubs must be lucky to grow up with such opportunity."

“They are,” he replied simply enough, shrugging his large shoulders. The male wasn’t going to say that his kids didn’t have it good- they had everything they could possibly need. Food, shelter, family, friend, entertainment, and just about everything else a growing cub could ask for. Aside from a somewhat grumpy father, they could consider themselves very lucky.

They could grow up into great lions and lionesses. Most of them already had, though he had to admit there were a couple in his litter he found he couldn’t be proud of. Who had grown up a bit too much like him, or a bit too willing to let males rule their lives.

It was irritating, but what could he do? Once they were gone from his care, they were free to make their own choices.

“Do you like to explore, then?” He asked after a moment, “seems like you aren’t from near this area.”
PostPosted: Sun Jan 16, 2011 10:09 pm

Did he like to explore? Of course! Fleance nodded and smiled. "Mmhmm." He tired not to seem overeager, but with a near infinite life-span, there wasn't much to do besides explore. Well, there was that and meeting people, but they died which was rather sad. So exploring it was. It was interesting to return to a place decades later and to see how it and those inhabiting it had changed.

As for his own children, he couldn't wait for them to grow up. Except maybe Kimo. She was his little baby. But they'd all have to grow up some time, right? He still had to break it to the little girl that she wasn't a goddess like her poppa or aunt or uncles. But that would happen in time as well.

"I'm not really from this area, no. I'm not really from anywhere. I've been wandering as long as I remember, though I have family that's settled down, so sometimes I visit them." He nodded. "I'm just passing through."

Jeraha gave a nod. "There are lots of lions who roam these lands," he hummed thoughtfully, "I used to be one of them." He watched the other, still not entirely sure what to make of him. He seemed... somehow different than what he would have thought for a normal rogue lion. Oh well, he wasn't a bad guy .Maybe it was just best to let it go and move on.

No need to dwell on things.

"I should let you go," he said lightly, "I'm starting to feel a little bit hungry, and I think I could do with some hunting. I'm sorry if I took up too much of your time, I know it sometimes can feel like years have gone by while talking to me." He was not the most exciting animal in the world, now was he? But at least he could admit it.

Nodding his head, he got himself to his feet again, turning to move away from the other. "I hope your journey is a safe one, friend," he remarked before departing, "perhaps we'll meet again sometime."
PostPosted: Tue Jun 18, 2013 12:30 pm

Fleance nodded. Mortals did tend to get hungry with some frequency. He knew hunger, but it was far different. He followed with a smile. "No worries, sometimes it seems I've got all the time in the world. It's nice to have the monotony broken up with pleasant conversation." The interaction left him feeling in good spirits. He didn't interact much with mortals, too many negative encounters left him wary which he knew meant he'd miss out on positive ones, as well.

"Thank you! I wish you all the best with your hunt." Still grinning, he bobbed his head. "Perhaps we will, Jeraha, but if not, it was a pleasure to meet you." He watched the lion depart and turned to be on his own way. He'd remember that this was Jeraha's home. A safe place with a good lion and his family. Fleance would do his best to return sometime during Jeraha's lifetime, if only to investigate out of curiosity. He rather enjoyed observing mortals.
