Firestorm probably hadn't had much more than a few hours sleep a night for the past few weeks. Between scouting out a suitable "Den" for himself and Shinoma to caring for her and proving himself a reliable, competent mate. If Firestorm thought that Shinoma was a fiery mare beforehand, that was nothing compared to her pregnant.

But for his sake, he dealt with it - and when he coudln't - he'd go out to hunt for her. While he didn't care for the taste of the squirrels or rabbits or even the deer, it was stress relieving to take out those frustrations. And... to think about the day that he would make even the great Balrog quake at how powerful and strong he had become.

But eventually, she had given foals, and Firestorm prided himself in the fact he knew where to find baskets. His herd had been taught that at least. He had seen to it that his tiny foals - THREE tiny foals - were safety nestled in the protective wicker moments after their arrival.

And Firestorm couldn't have been on a higher cloud. THREE children. THREE surely strong children. And he could swear he saw tiny wings on the back of each one of the little ones before they were tucked away.

Surely, this proved his virility.

And he had guarded them fervently as they were tucked away, eager to meet his progeny face to face when they were big and strong enough to break free from the baskets.

As the saying went it was always darkest before the dawn, and so it hopefully would be for Shinoma...for Firestorm's sake if nothing else! She could tell she had been stretching his patience, she had awareness and feelings enough to realise that, and so after the painful labour she had attempted to be easier to deal with. Attempted at any rate.

She was still incredibly touchy, and very, very protective of her foals in baskets, even going so far as to bare her teeth and bristle her entire body when Firestorm went near them. It was involuntary, an instinctual reaction that she hadn't even been expecting, she would guard the tiny lives with her own. She had tried to rationalise her actions as being those of someone wanting to make sure her progeny grew up strong, with no impediment to that, but it was hard to when there was obviously another reason behind it.

Right now she was curled around them, wings spread over one, tail tendrils curled on another and her head was near the third. Her stomach had been grousing at her all day, but the movement within had grown and if they were about to emerge she refused to move.

Firestorm paced anxiously nearby, just outside of striking range if the irritable Shinoma decided to lash out at him. Even after her pregnancy was over, the innate protectiveness made her testy and irritable. So it was with a healthy respect that Firestorm stayed nearby, but not TOO nearby.

As the days wore on, Firestorm was antsy himself. He wanted to take it out on something - to go hunting for his mate, but on the other hoof, he didn't want to leave in case the foals emerged. So as time wore on, and the movement in the baskets increased, he stayed closer, pacing frequently, and turning his head at any tiny crack or shuffle.

Finally, the sides of the wicker baskets began to bulge with unmistakable hoofprints. It was time.

He stood, wings partly raised in his attention, tail swaying as he knew he couldn't help them out. This was their first hurdle - their proof of strength.

Shinoma had been watching Firestorm pacing, moving around as he waited for the same thing she was. Her eyes were slits as she watched him, which opened as one of the baskets shivered, her wing moving as the basket lid slowly lifted.

'Firestorm..' she murmured, uncurling from around the other two baskets, the muscles in her limbs complaining as she moved her legs.

She moved so that she could see her foals properly for the first time, grown large and strong enough to emerge into the world.

Finally, after all of the waiting and anticipation... The baskets began to move and strain. Firestorm watched with baited breath as finally, the lid was torn from the first, and then, kicks and snaps and wicker breaking followed from the other two baskets shortly after.

Firestorm watched with only increasing pride as all three of his foals proved that they had the strength to make the first hurdle in their young lives - the "second birth" - tearing free from their protective baskets.

Finally, they were before him and Shinoma, breathing heavily, but triumphant. One a smoky grey, with wings like her mother, and a horn like his! Another, deep red with dramatic markings like his mother - a stallion! A son! And another, a girl, and black as night and perhaps even smokier than her mother... but with a bright cyan in her wings that Firestorm had heard Balrog mention only once when he had asked about his mother.

They were theirs, though, despite the unusual markings and colors that appeared in some, there was no denying the lineage in their foals.

He beamed with pride.

Shinoma watched as their foals left their baskets, her feelings a mixture of pride and uncertainty, which was rare for her.

She examined each of her children in turn, pushing and nudging them with nose and wing, examining them for any weakness. She ran a critical eye over them, despite a surge of what she presumed was maternal love for each of the gangly legged foals.

They all had wings which pleased her greatly, and she could see touches of her blood in two of them..the third, a little girl that was as intangible as Shinoma was in places was confusing though. The bands on her legs were similar to Firestorms, but the wing tip colour was foreign and she looked at her, for lack of a better word, mate with confusion on her face.

She spread the winglets of her daughter before him.
'Where is this from?' she asked sharply.

At first, Firestorm did not notice Shinoma's critical eye. He was busy himself with examining the foals - HIS foals for the first time. For the moment, his plots and plans and anger at his father and herd were forgotten, replaced with a new pride. He was lost in the moment, and strangely at peace with himself.

"Our children..." He breathed, a wide smile on his face.

He looked over the fiery colt, the ashen filly, and finally the shadowy filly ... his eyes travelling up to Shinoma's critical look and impending question.

He blinked at her, surprised at her sharp note before looking again at the bright cyan that tipped the filly's wings. His brow furrowed. "My father spoke once of my mother... he described a vivid blue on her feathers... I .. can only assume that it came from her blood in my veins."

He cocked his head with a furrow of his brow. "Is there a problem with that?" His ears canted backwards.

'And your mother was like you?' Shinoma asked sharply, letting of the fillies winglets. The filly closed them, and looked up and between her two parents; even though she'd only just emerged she could feel the tension and it knotted her stomach.

She looked from the filly to her other two children, proud of how much like her they looked. Her blood was obviously stronger in these two, and she had high hopes for them..but the third. She wasn't sure how she felt about birthing a foal that was so like their father..and paternal Grandmother.

'I shall see how she grows..' the words hung in the air, their true meaning a mystery. She nosed at the alicorn, lipping at the wispiness of her slender limbs and the filly nosed her back.

'Yamika.' she named her there and then. It meant 'night' and even though she was thrown by the hand the genetic dice had given her, there was maternal feeling there.

Firestorm levied a bewildered look at Shinoma. "You are surprised that one of my daughters has my wings and my horn?" An ear flicked back, followed by the swish of his leonine tail. "Yes... of course. Both of my parents had wings like mine. ANd the horn came from my mother." Firestorm shook his head, wondering why it was such a mystery to his mate where her breed traits derived from.

Firestorm scowled. "Even though I do not possess fangs and batwings, Shinoma, I thought I Had proved my strength to you. ANd I am certain that my foals will be no less powerful."

He looked to the other two foals, the ones with wings like their mother. "They will all be strong like their mother and father. With strength and the fiery temper to match." He grinned. "And they will help us become the family and herd that we deserve. He nodded to his other daughter. "My Firestarter... You'll help me ignite the warfires."

And he looked to his son. "And with the fury of a volcano that your colors remind me of... Vesuvius."

'You had to know there would be some sort of reaction from birthing one with little to none of my physical attributes.' Shinoma replied. She was irritable with hunger and from laying still for so long, and his tone was annoying to her. He knew, knew her background by now, what her own mother had done and how she had followed unwittingly in Izusa's path.

He also had to know that if Shinoma absolutely had no affection for him and just wanted him for children that she a) probably wouldn't have picked him, and b) would have gotten rid of him by now.

She hissed softly after he named each of the other two and for a while just watched her other daughter, meeting a pale purple gaze when Yamika happened to look up at her mother.

'Take them for a walk..' she said after a time. They would need to learn their legs, and get acquianted with walking and eventually the use of their winglets but for now she was starved and no good to be around.

"Well, she is not without a maternal resemblance." FIrestorm, ever argumentative, responded. "She's got your wispiness, Mistbat." He knew she was irritable, but that was never something that stopped him in the past. He was in a good mood, proud of his children, and eager for the future and the domination that surely would come with increased numbers.

However, going for a walk with his new foals seemed a perfect idea, and Shinoma needed her time. "Come, foals, I shall show you the land that you can call your own." He coaxed them, leading them away from their mother for the time being.
