It's great to encourage kids to play and all, and we were all beginners at some point...

But JEEZE!

So my jazz director (for the middle/high school) was talking to my sister, who's going into middle school next year. He said, "So...you play trombone, right? biggrin " sarcastically, in his usual joking/sarcastic manner... primarily because there were only three trombones in the A Jazz band at the middle school this year (he actually filled up the trombone row by sticking two flute players there instead of by the saxes).

My sister took it as seriousness. She came home yesterday with a trombone.

I think I'm going to shoot myself listening to her practice. At least the flute could be somewhat blocked out by my door. Not the t-bone. @____@ And it's not like she's SERIOUSLY practicing or trying to learn the instrument, she's just blowing into it.

Have any of you had similar experiences?

Its extremely painful to listen to, but I voted yes. I actually like listening to beginners, for two reasons. First off, this could be a new band nerd biggrin and second, if the kid is constantly trying, I like hearing the progress they are making. Plus I like teaching kids how to play, so naturally I like listening to beginners smile

I like teaching them, therefore I have to listen to them. The best part is watching their faces light up when they actually begin to get it. razz

Dude nothing is worse when another person in your section that you really don't like makes your ears bleed everytime he attempts to play altissimo.... like if you though piccilos high notes were earsplitting, try listening to really, really bad altissimo...

we have a Jack-Of-All-Trades-Sucks-At-All. He thinks he's good, but he's horrible. He's not even a beginner, either! He's been playing for 4 years now and sounds like an 7th grader at best. He's a sophomore. He plays with his headphones in to what he thinks is the right part, but it's WAY off. When he plays his bass in Jazz he always causes a bunch of cacophony. This is his second year in Jazz and he still hasn't learned to not play when he's not supposed to. Especially something totally unrelated to what we're doing. He has to tab out all the stuff because he can't read bass. You'd think he'd learn the notes first before offering to play bass. The kid is SO Annoying! stressed

It depends on the beginner for me. I wince alot at beginner band concerts, and i tend to turn away and find soemthing else to do if i can play the isntrument.

however, when i played trombone, i really feel bad for people. I'll admit i sucked at that.

I'm fine with beginners, but NOT the Oboe. Gosh. It sounds HORRIBLE! No offense to beginner Oboes......

i like listening to them. i feel like laughing in the inside if they sound weird but im not trying to be mean or anything.

me and my friend was like teachers to 2 fifth graders that are going to play oboe next year and one of them were my friend. they actually sounded good! and we had to let them play fingerings from a B to a high A.

Considering that I have to listen to beginners every single day of marching band due to the section I run, yes I don't mind.

Pit at my school is basically for everyone who didn't make drumline, can't march, or can't play anything else. There's very few of us who are there because we want to be...but luckily that number is increasing as the years go on.

If I didn't tolerate noobs we'd have absolutely nobody awesome in my section.
Although, it does drive me crazy when they don't understand how to play things the right way...but I can't blame them since they don't know and haven't played for six years like I have. xD

I have to hear it all the time. (I'm baritone section leader, for now..)
Every n00b goes to front ensemble or baritone. It sucks.
And I hate hearing them too. Seriously. Take 3 or 4 kids who suck on trombone, make them switch to baritone, and you have a suicidal section leader.

I can tolerate it as long as they aren't playing a piccolo. I like deeper sounds, like Alto and Bass flute though I don't owner either, but still it is fun seeing them try and be happy with their accomplishments. Also I was in their position a long time ago, so it motivates me to play better so I get farther away from that beginner sound. rofl
