Jedi

A Jedi was a member of the Jedi Order, which studied, served and used the mystical energies of the Force; more specifically, the light side of the Force. The Jedi fought for peace and justice in the Galactic Republic, often against their mortal enemies, the Sith, who studied the dark side of the Force. Although the Order was virtually destroyed with the culmination of the Clone Wars, and approximately 4000 years before that by Darth Revan and Darth Malak, the Jedi lived on due in large part to the efforts of Luke Skywalker, who forged a New Jedi Order to defend first the New Republic, and later its successor, the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances.

Sith

The Sith Order was a sect of dark side Force users bent on destroying the Jedi. They were characterized by their single-minded lust for power and the brutal methods they were willing to use in order to acquire it. The sect existed in many diverse forms throughout galactic history. Originally, the Sith were a humanoid species that interbred with a group of exiled Dark Jedi, but after the rise and fall of that people, the meaning of the word 'Sith' changed. In time, the Sith would not be identified by their race, but by their dedication to the ancient Sith philosophy. There were many factions of the Sith, the most notable being the Sith Empire and the Order of the Sith Lords.

Smuggler

A smuggler was someone who engaged in the clandestine shipment of goods or persons to prevent taxation or some other impediment. The goods shipped were often highly illegal or banned in some sectors.

Smuggling, while having been a part of galactic trade for many years in the Old Republic, absolutely thrived under the Galactic Empire's strict control of goods. The nationalizing of former Separatist companies' assets, including their vast merchant fleets, greatly increased smuggling's appeal—and demand. By 3 ABY, smuggling had become so common that Imperial officers often looked the other way if they found a smuggling outfit. For example, Admiral Kendal Ozzel, dismissed the Rebel outpost Echo Base on Hoth as a smuggling operation when reports of its location arrived from an Arakyd Viper probe droid. The fact that many smugglers operated in support of the Rebellion and channeled funds to them made such distinctions even more difficult.

Bounty Hunter

Bounty hunters were hireable mercenaries who tracked down and captured or killed anyone with a price on their head, although they were also known for doing nearly anything for the right price including the protection of clients. The best bounty hunters were very well armed and even more dangerous. There were, however, plenty of incompetent specimens throughout the galaxy, lacking any real skill but wishing to get rich quick or simply seeking adventure.

Bounty hunters usually worked alone, although they sometimes did form partnerships. Partnering with a bounty hunter could be very dangerous business, though, as they typically valued their personal gain—and survival—above that of their companions.

There were strong rivalries between bounty hunters and smugglers, most commonly seen between Boba Fett and Han Solo, respectively.

Bounty hunters were almost always mistrusted and feared by locals around the galaxy. This was because their line of work was so often dangerous, backstabbing and frightening. Many famous hunters earned reputations as fearsome as the most horrific Sith Lords and criminals. Hunters such as Calo Nord and Jango Fett became household names, though neither reached the unparalleled infamy of Boba Fett. However, there were occasional counter-examples to this viewpoint. Bounty hunters who followed government regulations and targeted dangerous criminals were often seen as on the side of law enforcement. On Haruun Kal, many Balawai children revered bounty hunters as larger than life figures.

Generally, bounty hunters remained neutral during times of galactic conflict. They were known to favor one side or another, although never officially joining any one group. For example, the aforementioned Calo Nord and Jango Fett worked with the Sith during the Jedi Civil War and prior to the Clone Wars, respectively. Boba Fett often worked for the Empire and even had a professional relationship of mutual respect with Darth Vader. The Rebel Alliance rarely dealt with bounty hunters, lacking the credits and finding the hunters' methods contradictory to their ideals.

-Guilds

There were a number of guilds associated with bounty hunters, the largest and best-known being the Bounty Hunters Guild. However, it was often plagued with infighting and a general lack of cooperation between its members, climaxing with its virtual self-destruction during the Bounty Hunter Wars. There were other organizations, such as the House of Benelex, Qulok's Fist, the Genoharadan, and the Granse Confederacy, that served the same purpose.

Most bounties were presented to a guild, unless the presenter was able to contact the hunters directly. Posted bounties would then be sent to hunters affiliated with the guild and the hunt would be on. With the exception of powerful beings like Jabba the Hutt, Prince Xizor, Darth Vader, or intermediaries like Kud'ar Mub'at, most beings contracted hunters in this manner.

During the Jedi Civil War it was possible to merely walk into a bounty office and browse current bounties, as Revan did during his stay on Taris.

Mercenary

A mercenary (merc for short) was a soldier who fought for any faction in exchange for a desirable amount of money. They appeared in all known eras where conflicts erupted.

Mercenaries were often said to have "neutral" affiliation and were hired by many fighting forces without actually joining them. In some cases though, they grew sympathetic to their clients, such as Kyle Katarn or Han Solo, who eventually joined the Rebel Alliance. Soldiers of fortune served not only as mercenaries, but also as body guards, enforcers and other military assignments.

Commando/Troopers

A commando (plural commandos or commandoes) was generally a soldier that was suited to environments and situations that most other units would not be able to handle, either due to training or equipment.

-The Katarn Commandos were a New Republic Special Forces unit.

The unit's origins traced back to a group of guerilla fighters attached to Kyle Katarn in the early years of his post-mercenary involvement with the Rebel Alliance. After Katarn retired from active military duty to pursue his Jedi studies, Judder Page was promoted to the group's commander, and they came to be known as Page's Commandos.

Officially, the unit was attached to the office of the Commander-in-Chief, but in reality it often operated independently for weeks or months at a time. They could operate either as a single unit or broken up into smaller units, and worked in any environment. Each member of the team was a jack-of-all-trades, but also a specialist in a particular field.

-Sith Commando

Sith troopers, otherwise known as Sith soldiers or Sith assault troopers, were the foot soldiers of the Sith Empire during the Jedi Civil War, and the main infantry of the Sith Triumvirate during the First Jedi Purge. Their distinctive armor and skills would set them apart from other military forces of the time, as would their often sadistic natures. The Sith armor also obscured their faces, this dehumanization struck fear into the heart of their masters' enemies. Also, the faceless appearance symbolized the soldier becoming another faceless extension of the Sith.
